The uncertainty surrounding Russell Wilson‘s Seattle situation has prompted teams to call GM John Schneider regarding the decorated quarterback’s availability. The team continues to insist its 10-year starter is not available.
Schneider and Pete Carroll said this week the team is not shopping Wilson, who has been in off-and-on trade rumors for over a year. While Schneider confirmed he has discussed Wilson with other teams, he is not interested in a trade.
“I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t listen to it, if I just blew people off,” Schneider said (via the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta), before adding there is no substance to the trade buzz regarding Wilson. “… When it’s out there in the media and all that, of course if I was with another team I’d call and be like, ‘Hey, what’s up with Russell Wilson?’ Just because you field those calls and questions doesn’t mean we are out there actively shopping him.”
Carroll confirmed the Seahawks have “no intention” of moving Wilson, whose $35MM-per-year contract runs through 2023. This, of course, comes a year after Wilson and Carroll butted heads about the state of the franchise and the QB’s agent unveiled a four-team list of acceptable trade destinations. The Broncos and Giants later made their way onto that list, and an end-of-season report indicated Wilson wanted to explore his options. The 33-year-old passer has since said he wants to finish his career in Seattle.
With more chatter about Aaron Rodgers staying in Green Bay, Wilson’s less turbulent offseason further chills the quarterback market. Jimmy Garoppolo‘s surgery is set to prevent him from throwing until the summer, likely impacting his trade value, and new Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell is behind Kirk Cousins. This chain of events could well represent closing doors for QB-needy teams, potentially injecting more intrigue into this year’s draft.
Wilson playing next season in Seattle would push this situation to a key point, with Condotta adding a new contract that makes the Pro Bowler the league’s highest-paid passer would be the Wilson camp’s ask in 2023. The Seahawks completed this task in 2019, when Wilson’s previous deal had one year remaining.
These “leaks” are ridiculous. Everyone knows he’s available for the right price. People kick tires and then stories get out to drive the price up thinking there’s a bigger market out there than there really is.
What’s ridiculous is people thinking he’s available…he’s not.
Everybody is available, it’s just the price that needs negotiated.
I suspect Seattle needs Wilson as much as any potential trading partner.
Too many people watching what ESPN, NFL network and many others talk about. These nfl people with their “sources” are all nonsense. Wilson ain’t leaving and neither is Rodgers.
People said the same thing about Favre.
You were saying, BuddyBoy?
Honestly no player is untouchable. If you offer a Walker or Ricky trade you can land any player.
Nah. Players like Burrow, mahomes, Josh Allen are not gonna be had for any price.
A team offers a stupid amount of picks you’d trade Burrow or Mahomes. Josh Allen’s dead cap numbers are pretty ehh if you traded him tho.
Most of these conversations for elite QBs start with 2 or 3 1sts. So if you’ve got a team like… say the Eagles with 3 1sts willing to give up their entire draft class and 1st round picks in subsequent years. You’d trade Patty Mahomes or Joe Burrow and go out and get a guy like Jimmy G for a Day 2 pick.
Steelers. Unload picks for the next couple of years for him. Last chance to take advantage of the players we have in their prime before it’s too late. Can reboot later, otherwise we’re just wasting away the inevitable.
padam: I definitely would not unload picks for any QB until the Steelers address the O-line.
Well, he’s not just any QB, but yes, the OLine needs work…everywhere.
Cool so he is available
Rodgers will play out this season without and extension then leave in FA and line himself up for a cake play to the super bowl. My guess is the Vikings.
Russ who will hit FA at the same time if not extended I’m guessing will look to do the same but instead of looking for the easiest route will look for the most weapons coupled with the most money available.
Rodgers has played a long career and earned heaps of money and even after he’s done will continue to earn good money. After getting back to back MVPs, he’s going to after championships rings. Russ on the other hand he is still a fair bit back from the top of the top of the all time QB rankings. He has 1 ring, didn’t get super bowl MVP and hasn’t ever had a regular season MVP.
My guess is either gets a huge extension and doesn’t care about the legacy or he’s looking at what team he could be on next year. Browns make sense with Bakers deal expiring, returning back to Ohio imagining winning with them that’s huge for the legacy. They also have a great o line, defence and running options. They need more in receivers tho.
Denver makes sense they have the receivers, but that’s an extremely tough division.
Titans and Colts, easier division, 1 superstar RB and 1 really good young WR.
Those I think would be his best options if he doesn’t get a super crazy extension. Don’t think they trade him
Having a super rich wife, I don’t think Russ will factor money the same way next time around. It’ll still be important, of course, but I think he’ll prioritize a good OL considering he’s never really had one in Seattle. Indy could make a lot of sense for him in that regard.
Super rich? She’s worth $20mil, wealthy but it’s not exactly Gisselle money. BTW he’s worth over $120mil.
$20M net worth isn’t super rich? I’d love to have ~$20M in the bank! Off the top of my head, I’d assume she’s the richest QB wife with Brady retired now. Besides, at some point you’re no longer worried about falling into a poverty-type lifestyle. An extra $20M of net worth is huge.
Wilson wants to be an owner. I will say it once more for the ones that don’t get it. He wants to be an owner so the hometown disc isn’t in play this next contract. I could see one after going to a team for legacy his next contract will be about guaranteed money.
I am back and forth on trading him. I wouldn’t mind a redesign of the team. I would prefer Pete to retire first. Not sure about John was the draft success due to Petes intimate knowledge of the college players (which I believe is the reason) or are they stumbling over past success and getting cute? Anyway Russ goes nowhere unless the return is crazy there would need to be a new contract also. Next year a whole new animal.
He can certainly be a minority owner someday. There’s zero chance his net worth is going to be high enough to be a majority owner right out of the NFL unless he makes some extremely wise business decisions.
I guess more succinctly would be part of Ownership group. There is a way for him to be a sole owner and that is Ms Allen selling/giving him the team for peanuts. Not sure how or if Vulcan board could say anything about it.
Exactly Colts o line, plus young Jonothan Taylor at RB and Micheal Pitman at WR. Colts aren’t keen on Wentz long term would make some sense. They need to add another target or two tho especially with Cox likely gone this offseason
Russ isn’t going anywhere and has two years left on his deal. Then they could franchise him but they won’t as they’ll extend him next year.
I lean toward agreeing. Just speaking hypothetically here because the article mentions when his contract is up. I think there’s a chance he may hit the open market but return.
Sorry miss understood I thought he was off contract next season. With another year on his deal I can see why there is trade rumours.
Think it would take a lot to move Russ cause he is a top 10 QB plus the dead cap. I think the only team which would make sense is Denver.
They play across divisions, they have Bridgewater coming off the books, they have the cap space and they have enough assets. However their sights do seem set on wanting Aaron Rodgers, which I don’t think happens.
If they threw together a package of their first round pick (#9), their second round pick (#40), the Rams second rounder (#64), KJ Hamler and a future first I think that could get it done.
In total 2 first, 2 seconds and KJ Hamler, a former second round pick.
Denver still keep their 2 third rounds and have catchers in Sutton Jeudy Patrick Fant and Okweu. Seahawks do a quick rebuild which isn’t the worst idea considering how tough your division looks at the moment.
If Rodgers leaves GB?
I wouldn’t overpay for Wilson – as he has been pretty average over the last four years.
Terrible take…he’s easily top five QB in the league.
Definitely not top 5 but easily top 10.
In no order I’d have It Rodgers Mahomes Allen Burrow and Lamar. Then Herbert and Kyler, I’d have Russ 7 or 8 then Stafford, Carr, Dak competing for a spot in the top 10.
Forget last season came back early from injury. Got better at the end of the year. Now with your top 10 QBs
Rodgers and Mahomes yes
Allen I haved like the guy from pro day. He has had 1 truly good year will he be there forget injury I think yes right now leaning to not yet.
Burrow is another I love. Would love to have him in Seattle but again not yet potential but not yet.
Lamar I am not sure on him. I will get ripped for this I am sure just not a fan. Possibly could get there.
Herbert I have trouble rooting for because he was a Duck but still not yet.
Kyler really have you watched him a whole season? Not sure if he puckers down the stretch or gets tired if it is Kliffs fault but he goes off a cliff. When he gets a bad leg injury he will have to rely more on arm. Not bad not great. Carr over Stafford always.
Before I hear the racist crap. I am old enough to have lived through blacks are not smart enough to play QB. I never believed it Warren Moon and Sonny Six Killer were a couple of my favorites. I will do my list on potential. Past performance will have a part in it too.
1 Rodgers
2 Mahomes
3 Burrow
4 Allen
5 Herbert
6 Wilson
7. Lamar
8. Carr
9. Stafford
10. Dak/Kyler
Not a lot of diff but with background thoughts. I know Sonny was not black also.
Possibly. Definitely wouldn’t say easily. The top 3 are Mahomes, Rodgers, and Allen. You probably put Burrow ahead of Wilson at this point, as he elevated guys like Uzomah and did so with an even worse OL than Wilson. Then things get muddled and you can probably make a case for any of Herbert, Wilson, Lamar, Stafford, Watson, Prescott. Someone might stretch for Mac Jones but I’d rather see another year first.
Yeah there are Seattle fans that will be mad a Seahawk fan would not put Wilson at 1. There are I am sure Brown fans that would put Baker first. Fans are funny.
Everybody thinks their guy gets slighted when people just have varying opinions. Wilson is a top 6-8 QB for me, but not top 5.
Can we stop with this stuff? They aren’t trading RW and they never were going to last year either.
