Many of the top free agent wide receivers are off the board, and despite efforts to add a player at the position, the Patriots have so far only landed Ty Montgomery. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, New England continues to “comb the market on wideouts, possibly via trade.”
Mac Jones‘ top receiver targets are Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor, and Jakobi Meyers, leaving plenty of room for improvement. Per Fowler, the Patriots were seeking someone of Russell Gage‘s caliber, but they weren’t going to match the $30MM he got from the Buccaneers. The Patriots have continued to shop through the middle and bottom tiers of free agent receivers, but no transactions have materialized.
The Patriots are also wary of compromising their compensatory pick formula, especially considering that the losses of cornerback J.C. Jackson and offensive lineman Ted Karras should result in a couple of mid-round picks. All of these notes seem to be hinting that the Patriots could be eyeing receivers in the upcoming draft.
Speaking of, the Patriots didn’t let Karras go without a fight. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots offered the offensive lineman a deal worth $5MM per season, but Karras ended up scoring a three-year, $18MM from the Bengals.
Well they definitely could’ve fooled me
Brandin Cooks cmon back. Texans can take back Nelson Aghlohor as both are on 1 year deals in case NE doesnt have cap room.
I actually think I heard earlier on in the offseason that they were looking at a possible Cooks reunion..
Good call on that one!!
What’s HOU’s incentive to make that deal? 3rd Rd pick?
They don’t need an incentive. They just do things and hope it works. This is HOU we’re taking about.
Houston’s incentive is trading one of their better trade chips for draft pick(s). Cooks isn’t going to be around once they emerge from the rebuild. Taking back Aglohor as part of the deal to clear cap space for the Patriots increases the return.
That was my point — just wondering what return would make it worth it for them. A third sounds right. Maybe a 3rd and a 5th or something.
The Vikings have some available. They have 3 guys coming back injury so they definitely are not going to keep all of the receivers they have.
Bisi Johnson and Blake Proehl are the only two Vikings wideouts I remember being on injured reserve last year, and they probably slot in as the 5th and 6th wide receivers at the moment. There’s no way the team is trading Jefferson, Thielen, Osborn or Smith-Marsette, and Johnson would only command a 7th, at best. For Proehl, they’d be lucky to get a conditional 7th. This doesn’t count Dan Chisena, who is a special teamer far more than he is a wide receiver.
BTW, Dede Westbrook and Chad Beebe are both UFA’s.
Landry?
really don’t trust bill with drafting receivers personally I’d go obj and sammy watkins
Pop, are you out of your freekin mind?
you want this and then they just bring back Danny Amendola and sign Dante Pettis instead lol
Best coach ever , worst GM. How many could they of won with a true GM?
They’ve won 6 of the last 21 Super Bowls and been to another 3. I think you might be overreacting.
Just WR for some reason, terrible at drafting WR.
If it wasn’t for Brady, their bottom feeding ways would have ended years ago.
Even with Brady, they traded for Welker, signed Moss, and added other role players throughout the years outside the draft (Stallworth, Woodhead, Johnson, etc). It didn’t always work out, but if you look at it, the wideouts now aren’t much different talent-wise than many of those they added in the past. Brady had two (three of you count Branch) very good to elite WRs that the Pats went out of their way to acquire. I don’t think that the strategy has changed immensely-Bill doesn’t like overspending for WRs, but he’ll do it if he feels that he absolutely needs to (contract for Moss, second rounder for Sanu, 1st rounder on Harry for example). Doesn’t always work, but sometimes it does. TE, on the other hand, seems like a different story.
DeVate Parker is now available. As a Dolphins fan I wouldn’t suggest this but he seems expendable with the acquisition of Tyreke Hill. I wouldn’t want to help the Patriots though, lol. He would probably live up to the hype once he gets dealt.
There’s hype?
What else is new? Same ****, different year.
Seems like Cole Beasley would be an ideal fit.
Too much of a nut job.
New England doesn’t need another slot receiver.
Plays the same position as Meyers. They need someone who can operate outside/downfield.
Weird that nobody is lining up to take a pay cut in order to play in a run first offense that has no offensive line, a noodle armed QB, all the while having to endure the “Patriot Way”.
I’m not sure you’ve been paying attention with the “noodle armed QB” part of your comment. He was handled with kids gloves, but the gloves will eventually come off. Did Brady also have a noodle arm?
They would be better off looking at trades because this buffoon is incapable of drafting talented WRs. Bill is cooked without Brady to bail him out anymore
I am sure Bill will be just fine, just horrible he took a rookie QB to the playoffs, terrible.
That same rookie QB who looked like a complete turkey down the stretch? The league figured Mac out and the team has an awful foundation. They’re days of being a legit contender ended when Brady left
I don’t think Bill is going to catch them.
They want a wide receiver of Russell Gage’s caliber, but the don’t want to pay the money?? They already have Jacoby Myers, Kendrick Bourne, and Nelson Agholor, who are all Gage’s caliber. Why do they want more crap? I’m getting sick of this poverty Patriots wide receiver core.
Doubt
