In the absence of not only Davante Adams but also Marquez Valdes-Scantling, wide receiver is an obvious area of weakness on the Packers’ roster right now. It comes as no surprise, then, that the team is trying to address the position, as noted by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Speaking after Valdes-Scantling left for Kansas City, head coach Matt LaFleur said, “certainly, if you look at our roster right now, we definitely need to get some speed in that room. We need a legit guy that can take off the top of the coverage. We lost a guy that was pretty good at doing that.”
General manager Brian Gutekunst added, “to replace a guy like [Adams] is gonna be kind of a multifaceted approach. It won’t be like a singular guy.” Given that the top of the depth chart at the position currently consists of Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers and Randall Cobb, many expect the Packers to make multiple additions between now and the beginning of next season.
Demovsky names Will Fuller as a free agent option, given the connection between he and the team at the trade deadline in 2020. He adds D.K. Metcalf as a potential trade candidate, though the Seahawks intend to re-sign the young Pro Bowler. With two picks in both the first and second rounds of this year’s draft, Green Bay will have plenty of options available via that route as well.
While LaFleur adds that he has “no idea right now” how the teams’ receiver room will look in the coming weeks and months, additions are all-but inevitable. They will also be necessary if the team is to maintain its status as an NFC contender.
I really want them to sneak Wandale Robinson late.
Lions 3rd rd pick 97
George Pickens on day 2.
Are they in front of the Browns?
“… a potential candidate…”?
that’s been the problem all this time: the front office mindset
While I’d love to have DK there’s a couple of problems with that happening.
1) If you trade for him, you have to sign him to a 4-6 year deal. Sure you can keep him on his 22 contract so the 22 cap number won’t be much, but he is going to want 25-30 million a year….and if you just traded devante because that wasn’t affordable…..
2) Not even sure what Seattle would want to part with him, but a first for sure and maybe even another….at best maybe the packers offer a first and second and they take it. Once again, would love to have him, but both these reasons are why I doubt it happens. His teammate Lockett would be more likely and affordable if Seattle decides to “sell the farm” in 22….which still could happen.
They largely traded Adams because he wanted to go go the Raiders. They offered the same money. But yes, they won’t look to add a 25+ million a year WR anytime soon.
It was a weakness before the Adams trade.
A weakness before Adams left? yet Rodgers won back to back MVPs. I do agree it’s now a weakness but it was not as big of a weakness that the media portrayed it to be
Yes, it was. When your next best competent pass catcher is also your top RB, it was absolutely a weakness.
If you don’t believe it, name a reliable, regular contributor besides Adams since Jordy Nelson was there..and good.
Randall Cobb
I said reliable, regular, and SINCE Nelson.
Try again.
I’m 100% sure that last year was SINCE Nelson
I still said reliable AND regular. He missed more than a month and how much did he contribute? I recall 1 game where he stood out last year.
Want to try 1 more time?
MVS
Maybe it’s time to change your user name…
How many games has he missed? How many dropped passes?
I’m not going to ask you to try again, because you’ll probably come back with Devin Funchess.
Davante Adams led the Packers with 123 receptions in 2021. As Manny pointed out, Aaron Jones was next with 52. Next, and the first receiver not named Adams, was Allen Lazard with at third with 40. Next was another running back, A.J. Dillon, with 32. After him came Randall Cobb with 28, and then MVS with 26.
In 2020, Adams led with 115. Tonyan was next with 52, then Jones with 47. MVS and Lazard tied for fourth with 33 each, and then another running back (Jamaal Williams) with 31.
In 2019, Adams led with 85. The next receiver, Lazard, doesn’t pop up until 5th, with 35 catches.
In fact, you have to go back to 2017 to find a Packers with at least 50 receptions not named Adams. There were two-Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. I think it’s safe to say WR has been a position of weakness for Green Bay for some time if only one receiver has had more than 40 catches-let alone 50-in four years.
Great points, but the fact that Adams are like he did the last 2/3 years tells me they have others who command enough respect to not double Adams every play. Very few teams have multiple WRs catching 90+ balls and GB is no different. had MVS, Lazard, Tunyan, Jones, Cobb and Dillon all capable of making plays….all taking stats away from each other which makes it not look as sexy to you. Hopefully they get 1 or 2 good WRs this year!
My point..which may have been lost a bit..is they lacked another option who was available/healthy/on the field (aka reliable) on a regular basis. Jones is the only one who fits that description (Dillon doesn’t quite qualify due to limited use, and like Jones..) but he’s not wr/te.
Tonyan had about a year and a half before his injury. And he’s a te. Cobb was gone for a couple years and missed a month last year. Lazard has been in and out. Same with MVS, plus the drop issues. St. Brown..injury prone.
That’s what I’m talking about. Being on the field and producing regularly, for more than half a season, or even 1 season. There’s been very little consistency aside from Adams.
While that may be true, teams need guys who can make 50 catches, at least. Going four years without a second receiver is just ridiculous, especially with a QB who puts up the numbers that Rodgers does. Davante Adams had more catches last year than the next leading WR had in the last three years combined in Green Bay. Every NFL player is, in some sense, capable of making plays. The other guys in Green Bay didn’t. There’s no way around that.
They should probably clear this with Erin first, as they have to do with every decision.
I don’t know who “Erin” is, but I’m sure that literally anyone who’s associated with the Packers will be okay with finally prioritizing the WR position.
I think Erin Andrews bought a bunch of stock from the last sale they just had. Must be her…
