Jarran Reed is set to play for a third team in three seasons. The former Seahawks and Chiefs defensive lineman is signing with the Packers, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. The Bengals also met with Reed recently, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com adds, but he will head to Wisconsin.
The six-year veteran visited the Packers on Tuesday and will join a defensive line also housing Kenny Clark. This marked the third straight offseason in which Reed hit free agency. The Seahawks locked him up on a short-term deal in 2020, but that relationship quickly deteriorated and has led to a nomadic journey for the talented interior D-lineman.
Seattle gave Reed a longer-term deal, but an unusual development led to his exit. Reed refused to restructure his two-year, $23MM pact in 2021, leading to the Seahawks cutting him. The Chiefs gave Reed a one-year, $5.5MM deal and used him as a 17-game starter.
A former second-round pick out of Alabama, Reed zoomed onto the extension radar after a 10.5-sack 2018 season. A six-game suspension stalled Reed’s momentum in 2019, when he finished with just two sacks. He recorded 6.5 in 2020 and 2.5 last season, adding two forced fumbles and 12 QB hits during his one Chiefs campaign. Reed has also tallied three postseason sacks over the past two seasons.
Reed, 29, has been a highly durable player throughout his career. Excepting the suspension-induced hiatus, he has never missed more than one game in a season. The Packers will look to Reed as a supporting-caster, with Clark, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith set to spearhead their pass rush post-Za’Darius Smith. This will be Reed’s first run in a 3-4 defense, though these transitions have become less notable given the increased usages of sub-packages.
Since trading Davante Adams to the Raiders, the Packers have used some of the freed-up funds to address other areas. They have since signed Reed and reached agreements to bring back Rasul Douglas and Robert Tonyan.
Good pick up should help clarify some what they wanna do for the draft
Stubs I don’t know much about him but happy to see Pack sign a DL. Wondering if he is more of a DT or a DE.
Sounds like he has got some potential as an impact player.
Beer- I think Kenny can slide over to DE if necessary.
I think it helps Green Bay in the draft because he seems very solid. I wouldn’t mind them using the 22 pick on an ILB and then grab Traylon Burk with 28. That I think would make us a whole lot better all around. Will miss Adams but it could be a blessing in disguise.
There is NO WAY they’re using the 22nd pick on a MLB’er. Not after shelling out 5/50 for Campbell. And you don’t need a 2nd MLBer with Barnes.
IF the Packers draft a MLBer it’ll be a guy like Troy Anderson, the kid from Montana State. The 6’4 4.42 MLBer who played Safety, RB and all over the field. And they’d take him MAYBE at the end of the 2nd round.
They’re almost certainly not taking defense unless someone falls or there is an edge rusher they like.
They’re top priority is to find pass catchers for Rodgers. It’s silly to use a 1st round pick on a MLBer unless he’s a true game changer and it’s even sillier when you play in a scheme that seldom has 2 on the field at the same time.
He will definitely be more of a DT, but I don’t think he’s really your traditional block eating NT in a 3-4 either…
Like the article said though, most defenses now are multiple, but he’s more a DT than a DE…He’s pretty good against the run, but he can also provide some push from up the middle as well, so either way the Packers will have a place for him.
I could definitely see him fitting in well either alongside Gary and Clark, or rotating with them..
I don’t think he’s definitely more of a DT. He’s played a 5 Tech most of his career(easily our biggest need on defense, so great signing).
He also played as a 5 tech coming out of Alabama.
A base defense with Clark as the 3, Slaton as the NT and Reed as the 5 will be outstanding. Lowry becomes more more valuable.
People also need to keep in mind, Slaton was a Guard at Florida before they moved him to DL. So his learning curve is steep. Not hard to envision him taking a big step next year…and he was a nice run stuffer as it stands.
This Defense could be the best unit they’ve had in a LONG time. They’re actually getting BETTER from the one that held SF to just 6 points in the playoffs.
STs they addressed with the Coordinator and with their punter…
I’d like to have Adams, but Tonyan, Douglas, Reed…possibly MVS and then an additional 1st and 2nd round pick? If the Packers just have average health, they could be better next year.
I also like it when Rodgers is spreading out the ball more. Getting it out of his hand. When he locks in on Adams…in the big moments, he can miss guys like Lazard(who was wide open in that SF game).
He’s more of a DE in the 3-4.
Played a 5 tech coming out of Alabama.
Just an AWESOME signing. I’ll guess he’s good for about 5 sacks, he’ll play the run well, but the big thing, with Slaton eating up blockers as he hopefully improves, this frees up Clark…and Lowry, if he can be as effective as he was last year, he can now come in on passing downs and also provide some pass rush.
Still wouldn’t be shocked to see the Packers grab a guy like Wyatt if he’s available at 22, but now the Packers look like they’ll be going just about all in on WRer/TE in the first two rounds.
Awesome move…Russ Ball and Gutekunst have done a great job improving this team where they can DESPITE losing Adams.
