One down, one to go. Now that Aaron Rodgers has a new deal, the Packers are expected to apply the franchise tag to Davante Adams (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).
2:30PM: Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers have now officially applied the tag (Twitter link).

Rodgers has himself a new four-year, $200MM contract, making him the highest paid player in NFL history. Despite the sum – which includes $153MM guaranteed — his cap number will decrease for the coming year. That gives the previously cash-strapped Packers some much needed flexibility, and they’ll parlay much of that money into Adams’ tag.
Adams will be happy to reunite with Rodgers, but he won’t be thrilled about the tag. After today, the Packers will have until the middle of the summer to reach a multi-year compromise with their star wide receiver.
The Packers haven’t used their tag since 2010, but this is a fairly easy decision. There was no way they’d let their All-Pro wide receiver reach the open market this spring, so they’ll buy themselves some time instead. For what it’s worth, Adams and the Packers haven’t discussed an extension since the Packers’ 2021 season ended.
Last time they talked, Adams pushed for a megadeal to top DeAndre Hopkins‘ $27MM/year contract. No matter how this plays out for Adams, it’s safe to say that he’ll get a massive bump over his last four-year, $58MM re-up, signed in December of 2017.
Hopefully he holds out and forces them to trade him to the Raiders.
Nah he won’t. Not until Rodgers leaves the team. Which may never happen now.
Yessir. Now all we need to do is get to the Super Bowl. Hopefully we can retain guys like Smith, Jaire, Rasul, Tonyan. It’s all coming into place!
I’m a GB fan and the play/playcalling has been awful in playoffs
LaFleur and rodgers both need to improve to make another SB
yup
If they are paying Rodgers you know that comes with Adams. No shocker here. It also clears up that speculation Rodgers is going elsewhere!
What speculation? Read the article Rodgers is signing a 4 year $200 mil deal with the Packers
Great day in Packerville. I mean, we’ve been a bit short on Super Bowls but the Favre-Rodgers QB dynasty has been nothing short of extraordinary. Beats the Lynn Dickey era I grew up in.
Just wait until the inevitable cuts start to get under the cap.
You can comment or scoff if you want, but cuts are coming…
Won’t make a difference. Packers will still be a top team as long as Rodgers and Adams are still there.
Yes, because Rodgers and Adams both play great defense…
This is the best I have seen our defense in awhile. Go ahead and cut Zadarius. He didn’t play at all master year until playoffs. There’s $25mil in savings.
Cutting Z saves 14mil. Not 25. Whole lot more work to just get under the cap. Plus even more to sign the draft class and leave wiggle room for the season.
Cutting Z actually saves $16mil while extensions for Rodgers, Alexander, Amos and P. Smith can save an additional $41mil. They can save another $13mil be restructuring and/or cutting Lowry, Cobb and Turner. All said they can easily afford to sign Adams to an extension and resign Campbell, Douglas, Lazard along with their entire draft class and some additional free agents to improve their depth.
Packers are playing in london in 2022 (Finally)
Can’t wait to see them in person!
Honestly, congrats to you. I’d feel the same way and have the same excitement if Tottenham Hotspur played another match here in the U.S. (I think they did a few years ago but I missed it). One big difference between the two: the Packers are a bona fide championship contender.
Wow yep guys gonna cost $77 mil out of the $208 mil cap yikes
