SATURDAY: Green Bay is giving Douglas a three-year deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter). The former journeyman cornerback agreed to terms on a $21MM deal, with Rapoport adding it can max out at $25.5MM (Twitter link).
THURSDAY: This will not exactly compete with the previous Packers development for news value, but the team is closing in on bringing back one of its priority free agents. Rasul Douglas is expected to re-sign with the Packers, Josina Anderson of USA Today tweets.
Douglas’ second contract with the Packers is expected to go through after Davante Adams‘ $20MM franchise tag number comes off the books, per Anderson. The Packers are trading Adams to the Raiders for first- and second-round picks.
Douglas will join De’Vondre Campbell as 2021 defensive standouts re-signing with Green Bay. Despite the Packers rostering Jaire Alexander and 2021 first-round pick Eric Stokes, they were working on a Douglas extension earlier this week. Douglas hit free agency but has not been connected to other teams. The veteran revitalized his career in Green Bay, helping the NFC North champions after a late arrival.
The 27-year-old cornerback intercepted a career-high five passes, despite playing in just 12 regular-season games, and returned two for touchdowns. The former Eagles, Panthers, Raiders, Texans and Cardinals defender enjoyed a career year in coverage as well, limiting quarterbacks to a 44.5 passer rating — down from 108.5 with the Panthers in 2020 — and a 50% completion rate. Douglas helped the Packers considerably while Alexander missed time. The two are on course to play together next season.
It’s not a trade off, but it’s great to see the Packers with one of the best DBs around. It’s been awhile since they have had so much depth…
The packs secondary is stacked along with their defense filtered with former 1st round picks. Now the only thing the packers need is to address the WR position
I think some more line help/depth on both sides would be great as well.
Watch Gute draft a long snapper in the first round though.
LS in the first? Lol. That’s reaching. DT OT and WR in the early rounds since that’s their biggest need before taking a long snapper. That’ll come in the later rounds
Reaching is also assuming I was being completely serious.
They have 2 Firsts and 2 Seconds to throw a few darts at a WR.
That’s absolutely true, but what evidence over the past several seasons (like, since they drafted Adams..) is there that they WILL draft a wr?
Even if they do, keep in mind Rodgers doesn’t exactly have instant chemistry with his pass catchers.
Seems like they HAVE to draft one early this year (not necessarily in round 1), unless they plan to sign multiple free agent receivers. They didn’t have the need for a top WR in the last few years with Adams on the roster
You’d certainly think they have to this year. Thing is, while they didn’t need a “top” wr in recent years, they absolutely could have used a couple complimentary ones to take some pressure..and coverage..off Adams.
Their next best/reliable pass catcher has been Jones. Everyone else was either hit and miss, or in and out due to injury.
Can also look at it this way: they “planned” for Rodgers replacement by drafting Love, but apparently ignored even the possibility Adams wouldn’t stick around beyond the ’21 season. And Amari Rodgers has not shown any signs of becoming a star.
Do you think this is the year they move on from Crosby? I doubt they’ll draft a kicker but maybe bring in a vet in for camp to compete with. I’d like to see Amari play more than special teams but don’t think he’s a real threat yet.
I expected Crosby would have been flat out released during their cut/extend/restructure marathon leading up to the new cap year, or cut and re-signed to less money. Now I just don’t know, unless they do a post-June 1 cut to save a little more money, or..just ride into camp as is and a random camp leg beats him out for the job. He had a really bad year once before and came back strong..of course he was much younger then. But his age makes it that much more perplexing why they didn’t do anything this time.
Seems like he was a 1 hit wonder and did it at the right time. Good for him. I doubt he has another season like this but hope he does.
Welcome AJ Green
If the Packers can use the additional cap space to resign Douglas and sign a WR and DL to pair with Clark, this trade could actually wind up being a net gain.
There are still a few impact free agents available such as Jarvis Landry, OBJ, Gronk, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Julio Jones, Cole Beasley, Fletcher Cox, Akiem Hicks, Linval Joseph, Quinton Jefferson and Derrick Nnadi.
Finally use their first 5 draft picks on WR, OL, DL, Edge Rusher and the secondary. This should add some talented depth which will serve them well when injuries occur.
That’s a lot for him, way more than a prove it wasn’t a fluke deal… he’s probably not starting unless Alexander had a setback or something
Starting is irrelevant as a 3rd CB. He’ll get plenty of snaps. If the opposing offense starts with 2 wr then no, he won’t “start” but teams play more than enough 3+ wr that he’ll be out there a lot.
Also, he was projected to get a 4/$36 (possibly more) on the open market so this deal comes in below that.
Pretty sure JUJu’s a Chief. This will be the year they draft at least one WR in the first two rounds.
Pretty sure my comment was made before JuJu, Cox and Jefferson all signed.
