Tim Boyle is back. On Monday, the Lions agreed to a new one-year deal with the backup quarterback, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (on Twitter).

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise given Boyle’s standing with the team. The new deal could pay him up to $2.5MM with $1.75MM guaranteed, providing the Lions with an experienced backstop behind starter Jared Goff.
“I’ve built a lot of special relationships here,” Boyle said recently. “I love the area. The fans have been awesome to me. And, yeah, I don’t get paid to make those decisions, but hopefully I put myself in an enough of a position to have them consider me back because I’d love to come back.”
Boyle made three starts in Goff’s stead in 2021. In that limited sample, he completed 64.9% of his throws with three touchdowns against six interceptions. Of course, the Lions are hoping for a healthy, productive season out of Goff, which will mean limited action from Boyle.
The Lions’ GM made a massive mistake by taking on Goff’s massive moneysink contract. You don’t need to pay a QB $30+ million to lose 12 games a year – even Boyle could have handled that.
What a waste of salary cap as Boyle is not an NFL caliber QB. Fingers crossed Goff is healthy all year and the Lions don’t need Boyle. If they do it’s a guaranteed W for their opponent
As much as I love Tim Boyle as a Lion and as a person. He is not a QB worth a roster spot based on his intangibles alone. I know personality is a lot when it comes to being a teammate and such, but it’s just so confusing why this guy, who isn’t even JAG like a Davis Mills who was average in college and you could see a modicum of potential, which Mills capitalized on (and which is why he was drafted), he legit was horrible in college.
I’d rather give David Blough a shot at QB 2 than Boyle if heaven forbid Goff gets hurt again.
Boyle must have dirt on someone because I really can’t see how he still has a job. I don’t think it’s a stretch to question whether he’s even one of the top 64 quarterbacks in the league. He’s been pretty bad in the pros and it’s not like he had some stellar college career to suggest he has a high ceiling.
I hope this isn’t a sign the Lions aren’t drafting a QB.
