Mitchell Trubisky may not be destined for a future career as a backup after all. According to Tony Pauline of ProFootballNetwork.com, Trubisky “is creating a lot of buzz,” and teams are pursuing the QB “with the expectation he’ll compete for a starting spot.”
Given what has thus far been a tepid QB trade market, the free agent-to-be is gaining momentum, Mike Klis of 9News tweets. While passer-needy teams’ fanbases would surely not be pleased with a Trubisky addition, the ex-Bears flameout may soon find himself with a true second-chance opportunity as a starter.
The 2017 second-overall pick wore out his welcome with the Bears following four inconsistent seasons. Thanks in part to the roller-coaster regular seasons, his 0-2 playoff record, and his label as a draft bust (especially when you consider that the two other first-round QBs were Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson), Trubisky had to settle for a backup gig in Buffalo in 2021. He really only saw stints in garbage time, completing six of eight passes attempts for 75 yards.
While Trubisky isn’t a sexy name, you can still see the semblance of a capable quarterback when you squint. He had a 29-21 record as a starter, and he tossed 64 touchdowns vs 37 interceptions during his four years in Chicago. Any suitors surely wouldn’t guarantee Trubisky a starting gig, but he would make sense to pair with a rookie or unproven young player.
So which teams will have interest in the 27-year-old? Pauline previously reported that the Steelers would make a run at the quarterback, and one source told the reporter that Pittsburgh “would be a great fit.”
Steelers or Colts are first teams that come to mind. Texans as well once they move Watson.
Can’t see the Colts doing anything until they figure out what to do with Wentz. As for the Steelers, Trubisky is better than the alternatives they currently have, so why not.
Add Washington and Carolina
Carolina doesn’t make sense for him. Rhule is on the hot seat and he won’t hitch his wagon to a guy that’s borderline starter material when he already has one of those on his roster.
If they can’t get anyone else, they may acquire Trubisky to be a backup option who can start if they bench Darnold again. Carolina seems to be, as is Tepper’s usual modus operandi, to be flailing it’s arms impulsively at whatever becomes available. If Trubisky is all they’re left with, I can see them grabbing him to act as an alternate option for the season. It seems, however, that Trubisky ultimately will not be available.
Jimmy G to Steelers
Commanders will draft Pickett or Willis with the Vikings taking the other option.
Tribisky to the broncos
Brissett stay with Dolphins
Newton to stay with Carolina
Bridgewater to Tampa Bay
Rodgers and Cousins both say on their respective teams and don’t sign extensions.
Mariota to Giants
Winston stays on the Saints
Wentz stays with Indy
Corral to Falcons (2nd), Howell to Saints (2nd) and Ridder to Raiders (2nd)
Vikings do extremely well to draft a good QB outside of the top 10. They don’t resign Cousins. Then comes FA they look to get Aaron Rodgers. Predicting a bright future ahead.
Steelers get Jimmy G in a move to continue winning games. Think it works out for them.
Denver hey Tribisky but it doesn’t work out and they push hard to Rodgers and Russ next offseason but likely miss on them both and have to draft a QB.
Tampa gets Teddy, he keeps the teams steady. But they know they’ll draft in a new QB in a year when there better options.
Giants have a feeling Danny isn’t there man and get Marcus is as a compatible back up. Likely draft a QB next year.
Saints bring back Winston and get a great value pick in Howell in the second round.
Falcons also plan for life after Ryan and get in Corral to learn off him as the back up for a year.
Too much
Too much? What, to read? Or speculation?
Both.
Well, y’all joined to comment on a rumor site, so complaining about “too much to read” seems pretty useless. But you do you.
Stop with the Jimmy G to the Steelers nonsense no way they want him. He is only signed for 1 year and will need an extension. No way the Rooney’s extend him and not know how his injuries are.
Plus all we been hearing is the need for a mobile QB in Canada’s system. Jimmy G is not fleet of foot he may beat Ben by 1 second in the 40
Yep and you can add Winston to the no fly zone for the Steelers. After dealing with Bush and Banners knee injuries why would they want Winston.
The Steelers will be going after Winston, not Garappolo. They want someone who can throw the ball downfield.
I wouldn’t get so far ahead with the Commanders taking a rookie QB. Ron Rivera is not the biggest fan of young signal callers. Look at his past teams, he almost always goes with a vet. Doesn’t mean they won’t take a look but I don’t think it is a lock.
The Jimmy G news to the Steelers is hilarious too. Teddy Bridgewater would be a better pick up IMO.
Trubisky or Marriotta. Bridgewater isn’t an upgrade over what they have.
I’m saying I would rather have Bridgewater. To be honest, none of the above.
Steelers should look in the draft and/or stay with what they have and hope for next year’s crop.
He would be perfect in Pittsburgh. No arm, no sense of direction, the only question is can he assault women?
Yes, yes, Big Ben is a rapist, we know.
HOF QB you clown.
Damn, did he really get picked before Maholmes and Watson?
Unfortunately that’s how dumb the Bears brASS are(hopefully one day that changes to WERE under Poles)
“…changes to WERE under Poles”??
You already want him gone? After what? FIVE WEEKS?
You Bears fans are the whiniest bunch of know-it-alls ever. Chiefs fans were sad to see Ryan Poles leave. He was a big asset to the KC FO.
Bears ought to up and move just to p1ss you people off. Nothing they do is good enough.
Trubisky is a bust, yet this posts reminds us he has an 0-2 playoffs record. That means the Bears went to the playoffs 2 of 4 years he was there. Yet you all ran Nagy off… after he couched that turd (which he didn’t draft) to the playoffs …TWICE.
We’ll take him back as well, thank you.
Bears fan here. I am excited to see what Poles and Flus can do. I always have hope for my team and these two seem to be quality picks. That said; Nagy was egotistical and couldn’t adjust his scheme to fit the players he had. Which is what truly hurt Trubisky’s and the team’s development. Nagy is not a head coach, but a glorified hype man for Andy Reid. IMHO Trubisky could have developed into a middle of the pack quality starting QB, which is all the Bears needed with that defense in 2018. I wish Trubisky well and don’t hold anything against him.
I wish him well, too. My only fear is that he goes to another team in Chicago’s division and then whips the Bears twice every year.
You don’t understand at all what his usage of were is lol. He meant he hopes, after Poles’s tenure in Chicago is over, that we WERE successful in his time here. Reread his post.
Read it again Greg. Papi is expressing his hope that things turn around with Poles. You gotta be a better troll than this.
I wasn’t trolling. His comment read like either he was trolling or was a whiny punk. I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
I guess we Chiefs fans just get tired of teams like Eagles and Bears poaching our guys… mismanaged the FO… and then trashing them.
It’s not their fault those organizations are mismanaged.
Just goes to show how important a good system and supporting skill positions are for any QB
Giants
Straight-up for Daniel Jones. =)
“While Trubisky isn’t a sexy name, you can still see the semblance of a capable quarterback when you squint”
Best one liner by a staff writer this year. Ben deserves a raise. link to youtube.com
.
Come on back to the Bills Mitch.
“I’m goin’ dauhntauhn to watch Mitch Trubisky and the Stillers take on Warshington.”
The only thing I know about Trubisky is he has the perfect name for Pittsburgh.
He’s got a great arm and can run. Why wouldn’t you give him a shot if you’re in the market for a QB?
This story brought to you by Mitch’s agent.
I want the Steelers to get him
No surprise if you have looked at the list of free agent QBs, Jameis Winston is the shining star among these has-beens, draft busts, and career backups…
I don’t that Trubisky is the worst, but it’s amazing what a year out of the spotlight can still do for one’s reputation.
It’s more a case of alot of QB moves made last offseason failed, Darold with the Panthers, Bridgewater with the broncos, Fitz with the Redskins, Wentz with the Colts, Dalton with the Bears, Goff with the Lions, Taylor with the Texans, Winston with the saints porbably a few more. So that leaves ALOT teams needing a QB
I wouldn’t call Goff a failure yet. I believe he could be a good QB this year. Probs never a top notch guy though. Maybe like a Tannehill best case. Same for Mitch actually.
My point still stands
Good points, I agree with both of you. It is still interesting to note how quickly people can change their minds about someone who spends a year out of the spotlight, at least to me.
To be clear, I am not making a judgement about Trubisky specifically.
I can’t believe Biscuit is still in the league
Still better than Justin Fields
