With the QB carousel mostly complete, it seems pretty clear that Jalen Hurts will be under center for the Eagles next season. However, when asked about the quarterback position, owner Jeffrey Lurie didn’t necessarily give a ringing endorsement. While Lurie told Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the organization believes in Hurts because of his intangibles, he never mentioned Hurts’ on-field skills. The owner also asked “who knows what the future holds, right?”…which is something an owner with a franchise QB probably wouldn’t say.
We heard that the Eagles had done extensive research on Deshaun Watson, and McLane writes that the organization kicked the tires on Russell Wilson. However, the two QBs refused to waive their no-trade clauses to land in Philly, taking the Eagles out of the conversation. Still, these pursuits illustrate that the front office would certainly consider an upgrade at QB.
Some pundits have even suggested that Philly could look toward the draft for a signal-caller. McLane previously expressed doubt in this scenario, with the writer believing the Eagles could move one of their three first-round picks with eyes on QBs in the 2023 draft.
Hurts finished this past season with 3,144 yards and 16 touchdowns through the air, but also 784 yards and 10 majors on the ground – both of which ranked first in the league among quarterbacks. The 23-year-old injured his left ankle late in the season, casuing him to miss the following game. While that was his only injury-related absence, it affected his mobility throughout the latter stages of the campaign. We learned in February that Hurts was going to undergo surgery.
10 majors on the ground?
My guess this dude who reporters this story is 23-30
Hahaha pardon me?
Because he sees the flaws in hurts game…
He took them to the playoffs but he’s a one dimensional player. Gotta be able to throw the football to get the most out of your whole offense. Sick fantasy player though.
Play Minshew…
Yes Yes Yes…..Minshew
Hurts’ shortcomings will not be fixed anytime soon, if ever. Trade him for DK or picks, draft a QB and play Minshew in the meantime.
I hope Jalen feels better.
Jalen is so under appreciated.
He lead the league is rushing yards and rushing TDs among QBs over Lamar, Allen, Kyler and other solid runners.
He threw 3100 yards and 16 TDs to 9 INTs in what was his first season as a full time starter.
In comparison Lamar threw 2800 yards, 16TDs and 13INTs this year.
Kyler in his now 3rd season was 3700 yards 26TDs and 10INTs which is great but when he started in the league it was 3700 yards with 20TDs and 12INTs.
Even Josh Allen, in his first full time year as a starter was 3000 yards 20TDs and 9INTs.
Yet all three of these guys were backed from their coaches and front offices. Jalen has had to overcome Doug Pederson and Carson Wentz making things difficult then this season had a new HC and a front office which doesn’t believe in him.
What have they done so far in FA to help him, nothing. DeVonta Smith even said he wants the team to get a veteran WR to help him, not Zach Pascal.
I’ve said a few times I’d love to see them get Will Fuller to return home to Philly on a cheap 1 year prove it deal. Could even throw Julio Jones a deal think he could be a solid fit on the roster.
Jalen isn’t going to throw for 4500+ yards a season and frankly we don’t have the receivers to do that anyway. What he will do is be top 3 in QBs running the ball, probably give you about 20TDs and half as many INTs which ain’t a bad return considering he will give you another 10TDs running the ball.
We should be supporting the kid
You left out the part where he’ll likely never be able to play 17 games in a season because he didn’t know how to play QB, nor does he have the skillset to do so. He’s a fantasy asset – that’s it.
Your probably the same person that called Lamar Jackson a RB not a QB then he won MVP over Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady etc
MVP = Most Valuable Player. That does not mean Most Valuable Quarterback.
A RB can def win the MVP over the likes of Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, etc.
I did not, but thanks for trying.
Guy has a noodle arm. If u think he can press the ball downfield like Lamar, mahomes and Allen then your watching a different game then the rest of us. It’s the most important position in sports and he will never be a top 10 player in the league at that position
So two of those QBs you mentioned can pass the ball. The rb can’t so much
A noodle arm like 43 year old Tom Brady who won the super bowl in Tampa Bay
Or do you mean a noodle arm like Nick Foles who won the Eagles the super bowl a couple years ago.
You don’t need a cannon of an arm to be good. And as for being top 10 I think he will be at one stage. Rogers and Brady will retire shortly, then you have Mahomes, Watson, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, Lamar, Kyler and Russell Wilson. Then after that leaves 2 spots…. Right now I’d say they go to Stafford and Carr.
Beyond that there is Dak, Matt Ryan, Cousins then a huge drop off to the likes of Tannehill, Jimmy G, Mac Jones, Wentz, I’d have Hurts in this group of players, which has him roughly placed as the 20th best QB right now.
Hurts only being 23, being a starter for 1 season and being one of the best ball carriers I think has loads of potential and will climb the rankings. Not having to deal with an offseason like last year will be a bonus, being finials with the HC and playing roster. I think he puts up about 3500 yards, 22 TDs and 10 INTs with another 750 or so yards.
But the fact he isn’t getting support is just crazy. Even the lions are backing Goff, the Saints are backing Winston, the browns backed Baker for 4 seasons. Hurts can even get support for 1 season it’s crazy
Minshew is better
He isn’t
They are no worse of a team with Minshew back there.
Career QB rating:
Minshew: 93.9
Hurts: 84.7
Completion %
Minshew: 63.2%
Hurts:59%
TD’s-Interceptions
Minshew: 41-12
Hurts: 22-13
And this was with Minshew on a very bad Jaguars team.
Minshew is better
Why let facts get in the way of a man’s love fest with a noodle armed man…
A mic’ed up Todd Bowles told his team that Hurts can’t read a defense.
I saw enough games to know most of his stats came in the fourth quarter after being down big throughout the game. You can put some blame on the Defense giving up those points but it was not totally on them. He was a different player in those fourth quarters with the pressure off but it was very hard to watch the early part of games.
The reason they became a run first team was because he just couldn’t get it done with his arm early on in the season. I think it was against the Giants but at one point after multiple turnovers the offense did not lest him throw a pass for two straight drives.
Good dude. Great intangibles. Probably going to have a long career in the NFL but he is average at best when it comes to the eye test.
Better fantasy player than real life NFL’er.
I agree he’s not amazing. But I think there is so much potential. He can learn and continue to get better. And as I said he wasn’t helped by the offseason of Pederson and Wentz and then getting a bee HC. He also lacked good passing options outside of Smith and Goedert. He has had injuries on the o line and then got injured himself.
I think it would be really smart to get Julio Jones, wouldn’t cost to much, would be a terrific locker room fit and great example for Smith and the young guys. Would open the field up more for Hurts, Smith and Goedert.
I’d also draft Tyler Linderbaum with one of the first round picks. Play him at RG for now and eventually move him into centre after Kelce retires. But having a front 5 of Maitala Dickerson Kelce Linderbaum and Johnson would be really strong.
Then thirdly and most importantly he should be backed and well supported. Even as you said he’s a good dude, great intangibles and deserves more. If Baker gets 4 years, Daniel Jones gets 4 years, Darnold is now on his 5th year of support Hurts atleast deserves full support for 1 season
Seumalo gets moved to the bench?
No need to force feed a backup C or draft one to sit the bench all season. Dickerson played Center in college and was possibly drafted with that intention.
At best Hurts gets another year due to lack of upside with the draft candidates. I still think guys like Corral and Pickett are better options long term. Just Not enough of an upgrade to justify the pick.
If you told me we can draft a QB and flip Hurts for a 1st then I make a move.
Wouldn’t really say Darnold is on 5th year of support, he was traded out of town to a team that’s desperate for a QB.
Jalen is fine. His numbers are good, yes, and I think he’s a bit underrated too. But the numbers don’t say everything. There wouldn’t be legit calls for Minshew if Jalen was as great as you say. Hurts lost his job at Alabama too in favor of Tua lol, so he’s always had his doubters.
A true freshman Tua at halftime of THE national championship game.
Needs to figure out how to throw the ball further than 10 yards down the field
Hallelujah brother.
Latest on eagles QB Jalen Hurts;
Surprise!!! He still sucks
Some NFL owners prefer a pocket QB.
He’s good with his feet, but that’s just the problem. He can’t read a defense and/or work through his reads and progressions so he tucks and runs way too early. Also has ball control issues and an alarmingly high rate of fumbles.
Hurts wasn’t a 1st round pedigree. Late 2nd. Could be Lurie trying to motivate him. The potential is there.
And what’s the big deal with the eagles checking in on Watson and Russell Wilson. Watson is a top 5 qb and Russel Wilson is a hall of fame quarter back.
Did anyone notice that Deshaun and Russell didn’t waive their no-trade clauses to come to Philly….? There’s a reason for that beyond Jalen…. Start with Howie….
Watson said the reason he didn’t want to go to Philly was because he’s friends with Hurts and didn’t want to take his job from him.
Watson: “I don’t want to take your job Jalen but could I get a massage from your girlfriend?”
Also, because it’s Philly. I live here – I can tell you it’s a hole.
There’s good and bad with every city but nobody boasts about the great cheese steaks in Pittsburgh.
As
Also noticed players didn’t want to sign or be traded to Philly because they knew they’d be stuck with Hurts and he can’t get them the ball consistently.
I’ve watched this kid since his 1st snap at Alabama as a 17 year old freshman. He improved every year. He has improved week to week as a professional. Strong indicators that he is likely to continue to improve. His teammates seem to love the 23 year old leader. Give him his shot. Watch and enjoy.
If they do trade him I hope it comes back to bite them. And this is coming from a DIE HARD EAGLES FAN. They need to help and believe in him.
In that case, why did Russell NOT want to go to Philly? It still falls on Howie….
Very few teams have a QB where the GM thinks we can’t do better than this guy. The Eagles don’t have an elite QB on the roster. Until they do, the owner and GM will be kicking the tires on every possibility. I’m in the camp that think Hurts could be a very good QB in the NFL. He doesn’t have the arm nor the accuracy to be elite.
Behind Wilson he was the most accurate downfield passer. Yes he can’t read defenses and that shows, but I’d say give him this whole offseason to put in the work. If he can’t or won’t then you have your answer. As far as what Lurie is saying, what do you expect? He has three picks in the first round and people want a quarterback. Of course he’s going to leave the door open that he may pick one so a needy team comes up with a package. You can’t trade down if nobody wants to move up. So when the quarterbacks start to fall, trade interest will start up. You can’t trust anything you hear until after the draft.
I remember Hurts playing well at Alabama but becoming a casualty of the (still) lolomgwtf “Tua Hype Machine”
I also remember him being not that bad at OU.
iirc, he led both schools to pretty decent records
… then again, I may be biased since I’m a former Sooner, he’s Frat, and it’s not as though he playing being the Colts’ O-Line or with a Browns’ backfield
ijs
They’ll never win anything with Hurts at QB, but it’s clear they already know that.
This is a mediocre draft for QB’s and the Eagles have great draft capital. They should trade one of their 1st rounders for one next year ( which will give them two next year) and work to improve the team for him this year by also signing a veteran WR . If Hurts improves they have a better team around him and if not they have the assets to replace him next year. I’d keep Minshew in case Hurts implodes or gets hurt this year.
The trade with the Saints looks like a good
one that gives the Eagles more flexibility if they need to draft QB next year.
