Aaron Rodgers has officially signed his record-breaking extension with the Packers, and we’re getting more clarity on the mind-numbing numbers.
Rodgers will earn $150.815MM over the next three years ($42MM in ’22, $59.5MM in ’23, $49.3MM in ’24), with the next two years fully guaranteed (per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Twitter). As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweets, the expectation is that Rodgers would retire after that 2024 campaign. If he decides to continue playing, the final two years of the deal (stemming from the four-year extension, five years total) would need to be reworked.
As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com notes, Rodgers will see $123.52MM in “new money” on the extension, translating to a “new money average” of $61.7MM (considering the additions of 2023 and 2024, coupled with the 2025 and 2026 dummy years). As Florio points out, that’s a significant jump from the previous-high of $45MM per year.
Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo tweeted out a helpful guide on how Rodgers’ extension will impact the Packers’ cap over the next three years:
- 2022: $28.5MM cap number (down from $46.7MM)
- 2023: $31.6MM cap number (up from $7.7MM on a previously voidable year)
- 2024: $40.7MM cap number
Only one way that extension and all the drama is worth it. Time for him to step up and take this team to another SuperBowl victory. Then we all shut up and he can ride off into the sunset. Anything less and he’ll basically have tarnished an otherwise fantastic career.
Eh I disagree. Worst case scenario he drops off wins o chips and finishes behind Brady, Montana and Manning as the #4 all time.
Medium best case he wins 1 and retires and then stays #4 or maybe #3 depending which stats you value between him and Manning.
Absolute best case he wins 2 and cements as #3 with a case for #2 all time.
When your worst case ends up with retiring with the team that drafted you as the #4 all time it’s not as big as people are making it out to be.
With 1 Super Bowl he will never be a top 10. His career will be remembered as a regular season King and not kind when it comes playoff time. All the whining and fussing has ruined him.
Yeah I’m sure he won’t be top 10. If Marino makes top 10s with 0 and 1 MVP Rodgers is easily top 5 with 1 and 4.
People want to try to make a team accomplishment the only thing that matters but there are what 7 QBs all time that have multiple SBs.
There is a reason we don’t put Bradshaw as #3 with 4 of them. Because SB value is so skewed and used differently for each player.
Dan Marino Troy Aikman John Elway all better
Lol that’s funny.
Aikman and Elway never even made a single all pro kid. Give me a break lol. Marino has 0 rings 1 MVP vs Rosgers 1 and 4. Support your ridiculous claim go ahead.
Why common folks like me will never be able to understand NFL cap gymnastics…
Rodgers will be paid $59.5 million (!!!!!) in ’23 for a cap hit of… $31.6 million…
According to the article, his cap hit for ’22, ’23 and ’24 is lower every year than what he’s being paid.
It’s called bonus money. I don’t understand it all either but it’s a common thing done by every team with basically all high paid players.
Tell you what though, as difficult as the nfl cap rules (and ways around them) are, I think it pales in comparison to nba cap (and trade) rules.
He’s a selfish player, should of let Packer use some of that money to improve the team
