While the Browns hope to unload Baker Mayfield soon, the 49ers are content to slow-play a Jimmy Garoppolo trade. San Francisco is prepared to go through free agency with Garoppolo’s $26.9MM cap number on its books, with Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com noting the veteran QB’s market has not taken off.
The 49ers holding onto Garoppolo for several more weeks could give them a chance to further assess Trey Lance‘s readiness to take the reins for a contending team. But it does not appear the team views Garoppolo as a 2022 insurance plan. Lance has been given the impression he will take over as San Francisco’s full-time starter next season, Fowler adds, with the San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch also noting Garoppolo will almost certainly be gone by Week 1.
Garoppolo, 30, joins Mayfield in having seen several QB1 slots filled by long-term options or bridge players. Teams are also concerned about Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery, which is set to sideline him until the summer. The Colts did not engage in particularly serious Garoppolo discussions, Fowler adds. Indianapolis was linked to Jameis Winston and, to some degree, Mayfield before moving to Matt Ryan.
This report seems to contradict a Tuesday indication the 49ers have received an offer of two second-round picks for Garoppolo. That haul, which would match the one the Chiefs gave the 49ers for Alex Smith in 2013, would likely satisfy San Francisco. A Mayfield-to-Carolina path has all but closed, while the Seahawks are still on the radar for the supplanted Cleveland starter. The Seahawks are unlikely to acquire Garoppolo, being an NFC West team.
San Francisco holds less than $4MM in cap space, so a Garoppolo trade would benefit the franchise, which already cleared nearly $20MM in space to allow for prior deals to be finalized. The team’s plans to extend Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa would also come into focus post-Garoppolo, with Lance tied to his rookie deal through 2024.
Jimmy to SEA, Baker to Texans only because CAR knows better.
Jimmy G to SEA only on a cut and sign. No chance SF trades him to SEA unless SEA was dumb enough to give up what the just got for Wilson.
Seattle’s just waiting for San Fran to cut him. They know they won’t have a 29mil backup
Texans don’t want Baker. Nick knows better, he’s gonna be a real good gm.
If Sam fails Jimmy be there if saints need a Qb jimmy be there . If Mitch doesn’t work out big chance jimmy be there. So he will be trade soon. If it now . Injuries happen and there many teams who don’t have strong QBs
Bro…
If any of those QBs fail their team’s will just punt on the season and draft a QB next year.
Hard to believe Carolina hasn’t pulled the trigger on Baker or Garappolo given their over-revved pursuit of other QBs this off-season. They must be planning to take a flyer on one of the QBs in the draft rather than have to address the 2023 contract uncertainty of these two guys.
“The 49ers holding onto Garoppolo for several more weeks could give them a chance to further assess Trey Lance‘s readiness to take the reins for a contending team”
You’re kidding, right? If the 49ers don’t already know what they have in Lance they never will.
Honestly, I think they know what they have, and that’s the hesitation. Drafting a project QB that highly, after giving up that package to get him, was always going to be a dicey play for a contending team. I’m not saying they don’t believe in Lance long-term, or that he won’t be good. Does he give them a better chance to win this year though? The fact he’s still a Niner makes me believe they don’t think so.
The original decision to mortgage their draft future for Lance was boneheaded to begin with, as is their malpractice now of having Jimmy on the books sucking down valuable cap space they need to fill new holes on the O-Line, defensive backfield, and for quality depth.
Team management has a fundamental problem in overvaluing their standing in the NFC over the last several years and possessing an ongoing belief that “we were only 1-2 plays away”. The roster now is not as good as it was at the end of the season, and they seem to be ready to wing it again in ’22 on this recurring “we’re good enough” mentality, when in fact they are not deep enough and always 1-2 injuries away from being a .500 team.
he attempted all of 71 passes last year. how can you “know what [you] have” from that?
Because they see him in practice everyday and realize he wasn’t even worth having 71 passes but they had no choice.
I was also trying to make the point that there are no offseason workout activities allowed for the 49ers until after April 18 – thus unless you are evaluating his vacation choices you won’t see Lance until then.
Who was a better pro prospect coming out of college, Trey Lance last year or Malik Willis this year? Any team who drafts Willis in the first round better be prepared to sit him 2 years minimum As far as lance goes I think the niners might be having buyers remorse from taking him in the first round last year because I don’t think they’re sold on him being their franchise QB moving forward. Just my 2 cents
