Many pundits believed Jimmy Garoppolo would be on a different team by now, but the quarterback remains on the 49ers. When speaking with reporters today (including Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle), GM John Lynch revealed some details about trade negotiations, noting that the 49ers were discussing a deal in late February that ended up being derailed by Garoppolo’s surgery.
Now, with the quarterback carousel mostly complete, Lynch admitted that the front office is holding still on the Garoppolo front until a trade materializes. The GM even noted that Garappolo could enter the season on the 49ers roster, and he rejected the notion that the organization would release the veteran QB.
“I don’t foresee that,” Lynch said. “He’s too good a player. I think Jimmy will be playing for us or will be playing for someone else. He’s too good of a player not tyear’s draft. o be.”
Naturally, this wasn’t the intended plan after the 49ers gave up a boatload of picks to draft Trey Lance during last year’s draft. Lynch admitted as much when speaking with reporters.
“We value strength at that position,” Lynch said. “To be completely forthright, though, when you make a trade of that magnitude (for Lance), most of our options did not include Jimmy on our books (in 2022)…But you always have to adapt and a series of events happened that it didn’t work out. But that’s not a bad thing, though. We feel positive with it. And we’ll make it work.”
Albert Breer of SI.com provides some more insight into the QB situation, noting that Garoppolo’s shoulder has been the biggest factor in the 49ers’ trade difficulties. The plan was to trade the veteran after the “big quarterback dominoes fell,” but the injury changed things.
I always thought the same as Lynch about Jimmy, “He’s too good of a player not tyear’s draft. o be.”
Subway has done worse ok
Hopefully that’s a typo or else Lynch was having a stroke during that interview.
Which might happen anyway when he sees his cap situation.
“He’s too good a player. I think Jimmy will be playing for us or will be playing for someone else. He’s too good of a player not tyear’s draft. o be.”
Wishing Lynch a speedy recovery from a mini-stroke.
Guess I could have read a few inches further down. Oh well.
It is a good practice to read what you’ve written out loud to yourself before you hit publish. In this manner, you catch more typos.
Show some sophistication, guys. “He’s too good of a player not tyear’s draft. o be” is a pretty famous quote from Macbeth.
It is actually Old English in the fashion of The Canterbury Tales
Tyears’s draft. o be or not to be? For that is the real question!
Skrk lurb a drk burble!
How about Minshew and a 3rd
How about no. There’s no reason for Philly to do that. They need a franchise QB not another 1/2assed QB or else they’d run with Minshew or Hurts until they get one, not package Minshew and a draft pick for another stopgap.
I’d rather have Minshew! There’s at least hope there. With Jimmy G. the fire is simply not there.
I can see not wanting to do it because of his injury history, but idk about questioning his fire or calling him a half-ass qb.With him the last 3 years, the 9ers were in 2 conference championship games and super bowl.Without him,the were in the top half of the draft instead.
Didn’t Lynch state that he had 2 second round picks already lined up? Where are those picks now?
In Indianapolis.
Pooooooof
Why was it necessary for Lynch to state the obvious? Any mentally competent NFL fan knows Garoppolo’s $25+ million salary and uncertain surgical recovery has made him untradeable at the moment.
Untradeable yes …. But you can still cut Jimmy and get a good deal of salary cap relief. If he comes out and says “If we can’t trade Jimmy, we will cut Jimmy” …. Then SF will have even less trade leverage as teams wait for the inevitable …. Jimmy getting cut!
Lynch stated that Garoppolo is not expected to be recovered from his throwing shoulder surgery until training camp in July. Even if SF cuts him tomorrow, what GM would negotiate a new big money contract with a player who currently couldn’t pass a physical? This makes me think that nothing happens until July at the earliest.
Lynch already said Garoppolo isn’t getting cut.
Garoppolo knows he won’t get that money again so a new team can give an extension with some new money and spread the current money out with it. I think at this point if he can make another 45-55 million over 3 to 4 years, he will take it.
I think Burrow and Herbert have set the new tone as to what the expectation is for QBs coming out … I fear Lance will leave a lot to be desired in that respect. I hope not but sure looking like Geno Smith, EJ Manual, Sam Darnold type of future.
You think he has that type of a future based on what exactly?
He got beat out by Jimmy G for the starting job. He was given the keys but was not ready, and he was never ready. That’s why Jimmy will start for you again next year. Enjoy ur second string QB
Actually the plan was always to start Jimmy and have Lance sit behind him for a year. He was not “given the keys” for you to make that statement confirms you have no idea what you are talking about. The only time there were ever whispers about Lance taking over was mid season when they were under .500 before the hot streak. Nickels worth of free advice- if you want to sound smart next time, maybe pay attention to facts and not just make up nonsense. It kind of makes you look ridiculous. Better luck next time champ.
Herbert was a big surprise actually. He was pretty inconsistent in college and didn’t look like he’d adapt all that well to the pros. Instead he stepped up from day one.
Just goes to show that there is a lottery element to drafting QB’s. Joe Burrow did look like a sure thing, but so did Tua. Kyler Murray has probably delivered up to expectations but the greatest sure thing who was ever drafted and hasn’t showed up yet, Trevor Lawrence, whereas Justin Herbert has been everything Lawrence was promised to be.
He’s too good of a player not tyear’s draft. o be.
OBJ? Obi Wan Kenobi?
The reporter(s) may as well have just written:
“Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy … JIMMY!”
I’m just happy the Pats got a good haul from the Niners a few years back! That’s the difference between a winning franchise and the Niners.
A second round pick was all they got and they ended up trading that away as well. They ended up taking Duke Dawson in the 2nd round and he isn’t in the league anymore. I would say the state of the 49ers is a tad bit better then the state of the Patriots at this point.
The 49ers have won more Super Bowls than every team but 2. They are one of the best run franchises in football. The reason the trade didn’t happen was because of his shoulder surgery. It clearly states that. People were shouting at the time that the Patriots didn’t get enough from the 49ers because they turned down a bigger offer from the browns. So keep making stuff up to make yourself feel better.
