The Jets are signing edge rusher Jacob Martin (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). Martin will head to New York a three-year, $13.5MM deal with $6MM guaranteed and the potential to earn even more via incentives.
Martin, a sixth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018, was part of the trade that sent Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle. Over his three years in Houston, Martin quietly turned himself into a key defensive cog. The Texans wanted to keep him, but the Jets ultimately came away with the highest bid.
In 2021, Martin made 14 starts and appeared in 61% of the Texans’ defensive snaps, both of which were new personal watermarks. While he posted only four sacks, Martin’s peripherals suggest that there was consistent pressure with room for continued growth.
Part of his success came from playing as a true 4-3 DE and Jets head coach Robert Saleh will keep him on that same track. Martin might not be as accomplished as other edge rushers they were chasing (like Chandler Jones), but he still offers lots of upside for Gang Green.
Jets are drafting OL…possibly their first two picks. They’ve signed all defense
Can’t imagine it’s OL with both (I assume you mean the second one would be Linderbaum?). I think WR1 and a true CB1 are still extremely on the table, with some chance of a LB like Lloyd, though LB could wait for their second rounders.
What should the jets do if Ikem or Kayvon are available? Tough decision but based on their signings I’m leaning on Ikem. Also jets GM is all about building OL. I like this cerebral part of the draft.
Me too. Part of why I find the PFF mock draft simulator so addictive. Personally, I wouldn’t be shocked or mind terribly if they went Gardner that high. But honestly, any of Hamilton, Thibodeaux, Neal, or Ekwonu could be fine by me at #4. They REALLY need LB help, but they’ve played free agency to not have any incredibly glaring holes, so they’re free to swing on who they think can be the biggest difference makers. At this point, I just hope their choices work out well. I’d love if they could trade back from 10 (maybe to the Steelers or whoever likes a QB?) and take the best receiver who falls. Maybe land a Chenal or Asamoah in the second round.
They also signed an OL 2 TE and re-signed Berrios
They’re basically telegraphing what they are going to do in the draft based on the signings.
I’m not so sure. They’ve made some significant signings in areas of need with Laken Tomlinson, DJ Reed, Jordan Whitehead, and now Jacob Martin. I think they’ll go with the best available at #4.
agreed and a WR at #10
