The Giants are one of two teams (the other being the Jets) currently in possession of two top-ten picks in this April’s draft. The team could change that situation in the near future, however.
According to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, New York is “open to trading” either the fifth or seventh overall selections. He adds that the package they would be seeking in return would include a 2023 first-rounder. The list of potential trade partners, of course, would likely include teams looking to draft a quarterback.
While this year’s class is generally seen as underwhelming, there is a chance Kenny Pickett and/or Malik Willis have generated enough interest to warrant interested teams (such as the Panthers and Falcons, slated to pick sixth and eighth, respectively) leapfrogging the Giants to select them. That could lead New York to move down towards the middle of the round in a mutually-beneficial trade.
As Vacchiano notes, finances could play a role in the Giants’ decision-making on this front. Having only one top-ten pick would save the team millions in terms of the overall cost of the year’s draft class. To that end, the Giants “might be willing” to move the traded pick out of the 2022 first round altogether.
Another important factor is the status of incumbent starting QB Daniel Jones. It is widely expected the Giants will not exercise his fifth-year option, meaning New York could be in need of a new franchise signal-caller next offseason. An extra pick in the top round of that draft – which is projected to have a stronger QB class – could make the process of replacing him more feasible.
While much is still to be determined in free agency, what the Giants plan to do in the draft is sure to remain a storyline worth watching in the coming weeks.
First rounder for Jimmy G and a third rounder
Waste of a trade for the Giants
They’re not a QB away from winning. Even if they were #5 or #7 is way too much for Jimmy G and a 3rd.
Lay off the crack pipe.
Haha, is this Lynch’s burner? Jimmy G ain’t netting anything close to a 1st rounder. The 9ers traded draft capital to acquire Jimmy (after passing on Mahomes and Watson in the draft) only to turn around and give up a TON of draft capital to draft some unproven dude from Northwest Baked Potato St to REPLACE Jimmy G. If the 9ers thought Jimmy G was the man, they obviously wouldn’t have done that…. but you think some other GM is gonna bend over to get him? Homer
Jimmy G is hurt so you are better off trading out of the 1st round with Detroit who is looking for another 1st round pick. They might trade their number 1 next year for your lower one this year if you throw in a second rounder they give you back their lower 3rd round pick.
Jimmy G isn’t even worth a 2nd
They should try and attach a bad contract like Bradbury or Golladay to the pick. I think there are a few teams going for it this year that would take on the salary to get impact defensive player at pick 5 or 7…
bradberry/golladay and a third holds value to other teams if they really wanted out of those contracts, teams with half the holes the giants have would be very unlikely to attach a contract to a first round pick if they were trying to trade back
Packers trade one of their firsts and seconds and next years first to grab the 7th. Get a top player. Grab a wr with their other first?
If Giants were willing to trade a draft pick the Giants should of tried harder for Russell Wilson.
No, they shouldn’t have. Russell Wilson would not make the Giants contenders. They would just be the Seahawks of this past year. ie, a mediocre team going nowhere. Giants need to build from the ground up, not the top down.
On top of that, their cap situation is still not good, so acquiring Wilson would not have been possible without major shuffling of contracts and finances.
The Russell Wilson-to-the-Giants rumors have never made any sense from day one.
Trading one of the 1st this year for one next year and say a 3rd this year makes sense.
This draft class is deep but no generational talent that calls for them to have two first. Get the extra 3rd and see what next year’s talent pool brings. The Giants need a few drafts under this new regime to recover talent and salary cap purgatory
In other words..-after critiquing this years class, we don’t want 2 top 10 picks. Who’s dumb enough to overpay for one??
Not so much thinking players aren’t worth the picks. It’s more about the cap situation they are in as well as the want for multiple 1st rounders next year if they looking to move on from Jones and draft a QB. Multiple 1st rounders would allow them to trade up.
Green Bay may was to draft a receiver. Seattle may want a QB. Pittsburgh maybe?
Shouldn’t the Giants be using of of those picks to draft a QB?
No. They should use them on offensive line and defense. None of the QBs available are worth the 5th or 7th pick and the Giants have way too many holes. Draft Ikwonu or Neal or Cross and spend the other pick on D-Line or LB.
They already have Jones for this year and already signed Tyrod Taylor as well, so they’ve already got money tied up in two QBs. Drafting a QB would be the worst move to make.
The Giants could draft to OL and solidify it for years to come.
This would be very smart of the Giants. Still get an elite talent this year but load up for that QB class next year. Give him a chance but Jones seems to be what he is …. mediocre.
I hope they are willing to trade one of the picks even if a team doesnt offer a 1st next year. I think sliding down and getting an extra 2nd and maybe more this year would be perfect. They can always move money around and its a lot cheaper to sign a mid teen or 20 pick than a top 7.
Got a feeling the Giants and Jets could merge and still find a way to misfire with all those picks.
I’m holding out hope that Schoen will be smart with the picks. If the Giants still had Gettleman, though, I would 100% agree with you.
Shouldn’t the assumption be that the Giants are already quite prepared to draft high enough next year to get a QB? Might be better off drafting o-line this year, so that next year’s QB won’t get run down.
Yes. I think this is exactly their plan. However, if they got an offer like last year’s from the Bears, ie, a mid-1st rounder this year and another one next year in exchange for the 5th or 7th pick, I think they’d jump at that.
Either trade back draft an OL at 5/7 and a wr later or keep and draft 2 top OL for a QB next year.
Giants need to draft a WR like they need a hole in their head. Already have Shepard, Golladay, Toney, and Slayton. QB and WR are the absolute last positions the Giants need to draft.
Hopefully Seattle moves down by trading our first for a first next year. With 3 1sts next year we should be able to move to where we need to be able to take a QB. Use the picks for an OL LT preferably. The always needed edge rusher and a LBer or DB. There are enough picks if we hit on most of them we should be good to go.
If they trade a first for a first this year and next I’d want then to trade with a team that’s still going to be bad. So no Green Bay trade as their first round pick won’t be good. Maybe Seattle
I thank Gettlemen for the trade last year as he will not be picking this year. although I hate seeing Micah goto Dallas as I thought he fit pretty damn well with the Giants. No way should the Giants pick any QB when next year there are several coming out. Id trade back from 5 if Thibodeaux, Neal, Ekwonu are not available. With 7 you still have many to choose from; Hamilton, Stingley, Walker or Cross. If you recieve early mid rd, I’m all over Linderbaum.
Denver should go after the 7 th pick offer Bradley Chubb and a 2nd and draft the kid from Oregon
The first rounder is part of Gettelmans termination package
