Many view 2022 as a make-or-break year for Daniel Jones. While there are questions surrounding his future beyond the upcoming campaign, he at least has the support of ownership for the present.
As noted by Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, John Mara reiterated the team’s commitment to their incumbent starter amidst the flurry of big-name moves which have taken place at the QB position this offseason. As Mara said, “people are realizing it’s by far the most important position in sports and either you have one or you don’t. We think we have one.”
Schwartz does note that the Giants have made a move at the position already. The team signed veteran Tyrod Taylor earlier this month, adding an experienced backup with extended time as a starter in his previous NFL stops. The particulars of the deal (two years, $11MM) open the door to a competition for the starters’ job, but Mara remains confident that Jones can be successful under the right circumstances.
“We still have a lot of confidence in Daniel and think he’s going to be a very good quarterback if we just put the right pieces around him and give him a little bit more continuity and stability”, he said. “He hasn’t had that since he’s been here. Let’s give him a chance to prove himself. He’s shown flashes of it, for sure.”
In three years with Big Blue, the former sixth overall pick has a 12-25 record, 50 total touchdowns and a combined 57 turnovers. Instability at the coaching level, as well as injuries – including to the Duke alum himself this past year – throughout the offense have plagued his NFL career to date. It’s not a surprise, then, that the team is expected to decline his fifth-year option. Nevertheless, Mara said that a second contract for Jones “is certainly our hope”.
With sufficient improvement in 2022, Jones could very well see himself as the team’s starting signal-caller for the foreseeable future. Despite the evidence pointing to that being unlikely, that scenario is clearly still the team’s preference as of now.
Well looks like it’s a 31 horse race instead of 32. When is enough , enough! Sure he’s a nice guy but given the talent at QB in this league , it amazes me that he’s one of the top 32 QBs in the world. Good grief.
He can’t stay healthy. What happens when he misses 8 games this season.
Give up some picks for Jimmy handsome he can come in make you a meatball sub go 15/25 for 210 yds 2 td and a pick and 10 wins lez gooo
As an Italian American I find this racist
.kidding this is hilarious
He’s in subway commercials ayyyy fogeddaboudit
Seriously though idk why the giants don’t make a play for Jimmy g or Mayfield. Both are an upgrade over jones and the giants have the draft capital to pull of the trade. Only issue would be fitting them under the cap
Uggghhh why?
Daniel Jones isn’t the only reason why the Giants stink. I think it is perfectly acceptable for the new GM to address other needs and work on getting his QB in 2023.
Enjoy less than mediocre…
The biggest problem is this is year 4. You have to decide are you paying this guy 21 million in year 5 or scrapping the whole thing. Why waste a year ?
Sign Baker or trade for Jimmy(or sign jimmy if released) Baker would probably sign on for a reasonable amount with decent years. He would crush endorsements up there especially with his commercials getting more exposure.
The Daniel jones ship has sailed he’s a career back up imo.
Did Mayfield get released? Because you’ll be trading for him too.
Neither will be released this year, though Baker may sit out if he’s not traded. However, he could increase his value for a deadline trade if Watson is suspended and he plays well in his place. It’s hard to bet on that now, though, because Roger Goodell is unlikely to commit to any punishment until after the lawsuits are resolved. Watson refuses to settle, so those cases could go on for a long time. He’d get to play in the meantime.
My assumption is roger goodell will drag this out because the browns made it so he only makes one million this year Roger will want him to feel it and look good to media and rest of league and suspend him in 2023.
Jimmy g will 100% be released before the season he has a 1.5 million dead cap hit. There is no reason to carry 25 million in dead weight unless you are actually using him. Argument to be mad cut him now and spend that 25 million.
Baker will be released or traded for a 3 or 4 browns already said they never asked for a 1
Phenom
Do you think maybe the browns hold off trading Mayfield until they know Watson can play this season?
Trade for him then. He will most likely be released there is not many destinations for baker they can’t have him sit on the bench will be very toxic
They should trade Jones for Baker straight up and let’s see what happens
Baker would not survive NY media.
Not sure he’d do any worse than anyone else. He already has a national profile.
Mayfield wouldn’t do well with the current Giants team. Besides, NYC tabloids are defanged and talk radio panders to mouth-breathers.
I could see the benefit for both teams. Jones could get the chance to show what he can do if and when Watson is suspended. Mayfield would get his starting spot back.
This makes sense if Watson is suspended this year
The strive for mediocrity continues
This QB was drafted under another GM. Shouldn’t the new GM chose a QB. Once again the Giants ownership is clueless!!
Daniel Jones is a good quarterback, I don’t care how bad he’s played so far. His supporting cast would make Tom Brady look mediocre. The Giants problem is that their roster needs work across the board. If anything they should trade Saquon for the best package they can get and build from the inside out. Unfortunately for Jones it’s so bad he probably doesn’t come out of next season as their starter anyways.
