Mitchell Trubisky could be heading to New York. A team source who is “in the thick of it for a competitive backup QB in free agency” believes that Trubisky will ultimately sign with the Giants and compete with Daniel Jones for the starting gig, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo (via Twitter).

During a recent appearance on the Adam Schefter podcast, Trubisky spoke highly of the Giants and new head coach Brian Daboll, who the veteran QB worked under in Buffalo.
“I think of Coach Daboll right away because of my connection with him in Buffalo. I’m excited to see what he does in New York, really,” Trubisky said (via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan). “I don’t know where I’m going to go, but I know whatever he does there, he’s going to do a great job with that offense. He’s a great leader of men. He’s just real and authentic with all the guys, and I think that is why so many people respected him in our building. So I’m excited to see what he’s going to do.
“And then, of course, New York, you think of the city. I haven’t been to New York that many times, but you think of big New York City and the Giants. So I know Coach Daboll will do a great job, and I’m excited to see that offense.”
We heard last week that Trubisky was on the Giants radar, but they weren’t necessarily considered the favorite at that time. We also recently heard that the former second-overall pick was “creating a lot of buzz” and would likely have a number of suitors pursuing him. After spending the 2021 season as Josh Allen‘s backup in Buffalo, Trubisky will likely have opportunities to compete for a starting gig elsewhere.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, Trubisky’s market could get so hot that the QB could end up earning more than $10MM annually. The ESPN duo also mention the Panthers and Steelers as potential landing spots, and they note that an organization deciding to pair Trubisky “with a first-round quarterback such as Malik Willis wouldn’t shock a few teams.”
While Trubisky isn’t a sexy name, you can still see the semblance of a capable quarterback when you squint. He had a 29-21 record as a starter, and he tossed 64 touchdowns vs 37 interceptions during his four years in Chicago. Any suitors surely wouldn’t guarantee Trubisky a starting gig, but he would make sense to pair with a rookie or unproven young player.
Trubisky already played for New York. There’s only 1 team in New York and it’s the Bills. He’s headed to New Jersey
Lol, how dare you!
Zzzzzzzz
Either you have a QB or you don’t. More clear this offseason than ever before. Are Mitch and Dan going to compete for 4-5 wins?
Rotating QBs is pointless if your OL is a disaster. Mitch has experience playing behind a porous front line but beyond that he really doesn’t offer much in the way of an upgrade.
Heck of a resume note:
” Thanks to the Bears, I can scramble for my life!”
Giants should not pay trubinsky 10 mill under any circumstances!!
I personally don’t believe the $10 million number until I see it happen. These experts are expecting a bidding war to happen for a guy who barely played last season. Trubisky will do well for himself but I expect there to be an element of “prove it” in any contract he ends up signing, and rightfully so.
Hell, the Bears traded up ONE spot to draft him…and he’d barely played college football. It’s gonna happen. Someone’s gonna “take the shot”. It’ll be a mistake.
I agree. This is a waste of limited funds. Let Daniel Jones own the job this year with God willing, a decent offensive line and see where he lands. If he can’t cut it after that, move on. Having two mediocre qb’s battle it out serves no purpose.
On point. Gotta give DJ a shot with the new management structure, and hopefully an Offensive Lineman or Five.
10 mil for 2 years is not that bad.
trubinsky
The more I read about people raising the possibility of Trubisky going to the Steelers, the more I’m warming to the idea. He certainly got a raw deal in Chicago as far as a supporting cast. The Steelers have made plain that they want a mobile quarterback. And while there might be worse circumstances for next season than having Mason Rudolph start, I’m having trouble thinking of many.
I am onboard with giving Trubisky a shot. Obviously he could suck but when your QB is Daniel Jones, you have to try something. And 10 million is a little on the high side for backup, but I am okay with it because I don’t think he will be a backup for more than a few games.
Giants have a horrible cap situation and are trying to cut salary left and right. Not sure how Trubisky makes any sense whatsoever.
Who would you like the backup to be? Don’t believe the $10M number. They need a capable backup, as last year proved.
Where exactly are the Giants going this year? Why do they ‘need’ a backup? They’re doing a full re-build. One of the last things they need is an expensive backup QB who may never even see the field. Trubisky is not a long term answer, so why bother?
He won’t cost $10M and they need a capable backup. Last year proved that.
Oh ya…with Johnny Unitas as a backup they MIGHT have won another game.
Trubisky is a lot better than Daniel Jones, but the Giants should trade for Gardner Minshew: he’s better than both of them.
I’d jump out a window. If they are dead set on adding a QB now with any thought of him being a future starter, just bite the bullet and draft Willis. I’d seriously prefer to build out the rest of the team smartly and then solve QB. We have WAY to many holes for this nonsense. We have one offensive lineman, we have one pass rusher, we might not have any linebackers depending on what they do with Martinez. Might even need a starting cornerback. Spending money now on a qb competition is kind of crazy. Fill holes and fix the cap. QB next year.
Maybe I’m missing something but he has a winning record and more tds then ints
Why isn’t he a starter ?
