Both Saquon Barkley and James Bradberry have surfaced as trade candidates, though it is unclear how seriously the Giants are with those respective courses of action. It appears the team is fairly intent on moving at least one.
In pursing their goal of clearing $40MM-plus in cap space, the Giants have had discussions with multiple teams about trading Barkley and/or Bradberry, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports. However, the duo is not generating too much interest. A Day 3 choice may be the max value the Giants could net for either player, Vacchiano notes. That is unlikely to move the needle for the Giants on Barkley.
Bradberry was reported to have more value than Barkley, the latter’s reputation and dominant rookie season notwithstanding. But their current values may put the new Giants regime to key decisions. They are likely to move on from at least one of the duo, Vacchiano adds, due to cap constraints.
It would be rather strange to see Barkley unloaded, given his reduced trade value after three injury-plagued years. The former No. 2 overall pick carries just a $7.2MM cap number — down from $10MM in 2021 — on his fifth-year option. Both Barkley and Bradberry’s deals expire after the 2022 season. Leaguewide concern exists on Barkley’s health, per Vacchiano. A high ankle sprain, ACL and MCL tears and another ankle issue have felled Barkley over the past three years. The would-be superstar faces perhaps a make-or-break season in 2022.
A Bradberry swap would give the Giants $12.1MM in cap space. The ex-Panther cornerback signed a three-year, $45MM deal in 2020. Dropping Bradberry would also leave the Giants shorthanded at corner. No. 1 corners are certainly more difficult to replace than running backs.
It will be interesting to see where the Giants go here. They made multiple cuts but also reached pay-cut agreements to retain Blake Martinez and Sterling Shepard. As of Monday evening, Big Blue remains over the 2022 cap.
Love Saquon. Wish him the best. Wish he was able to live out his potential with the Gmen.
Unfortunately, mostly due to injury, he has played like a very replaceable 5th round RB.
He’s played way better than that, come on. 3,000 yards rushing on 4.5/carry, 19 TDs in four years. Plus another 1,500 receiving yards on 190 catches and 8 more TDs. That’s way better than a ‘replaceable 5th round RB’.
He was still feeling his way back from injury last year and had one of the worst OLs in the league in front of him. He’ll be better this year.
Third best running back in his draft class.
…And? Assuming you’re talking about Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, they were drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds, 31st and 35th overall, respectively.
The argument here is “has Saquon played like a ‘replaceable 5th round RB'”. I am saying he’s played way better than that. No RB in that class past the 2nd round has put up even *half* of what Barkley has.
Chubb>Barkley >Sony
My favorite stat on Barkley is that over his four years in NY the Giants actually had a better record when he DID NOT PLAY.
I don’t get what the the chiefs are doing why not go out and get both these dudes for a 2nd
Because there’s a salary cap? Because they already have a disappointing first round running back who can’t stay healthy?
I don’t really see them trading Saquon. They should be demanding a more than a 3rd rounder, but I doubt anyone will offer close to that. Just keep him at that rate.
I think Bradberry will get traded, but not sure what the return will be. That’s a lot of cap savings to leave on the table and I imagine the Giants would be inclined to take less for him.
It’s just hard to see why another team would want to give up more than a 3rd rounder for Saquon. 6th highest cap hit and 8th highest total cash in 2022 among RBs. When you’re paying top money for a RB, you’re usually in a land of questionable value, and this is someone who simply hasn’t stayed healthy since he was a rookie. Who benefits from trading a third rounder for one expensive year of a running back whose missed 21 out of 49 games in the last three years?
Exactly. Which is why I don’t see him getting traded.
If we’re talking salary dump then the colts should just do it and sign Mariota. Fewest pass attempts in the history of the NFL.
Cardinals should take a flyer on Barkley. Great running and receiving the ball as a catching option. I could see him being a great fit with Kyler, DHop and those guys
Don’t need him
As a cards fan, i rather them trading for Bradberry. We really need corners
Barkley another Gutterman busy. Not sure how this clown ever keep his job in NY. This franchise will take a couple of years to re-group
You mean Dave Gettleman, the GM allowed to retire in January after leaving the Giants barren in both their roster and their cap.
I could see the Jets offering a 4th rounder for Bradberry, especially since they didn’t land either of the top CBs yesterday.
