The Chiefs have given Tyreek Hill permission to seek a trade (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero). Already, the Jets and Dolphins are engaged in “serious talks” to acquire the star wide receiver, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com hears (Twitter link).
Hill, who turned 28 this week, was previously in extension talks with the Chiefs. As of this writing, he still has one more year to go on his three-year, $54MM deal. His next contract could very well come from another team. Multiple clubs have chatted with the Chiefs, Schefter hears (Twitter link), but the Dolphins and Jets currently stand as the frontrunners.
Clearly, the two sides had a bridge to gap in extension talks, but few expected Hill to be on the block. It’s yet another stunner in what has been a chaotic offseason. We’re hardly past the midway point in March, but Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, Davante Adams, Khalil Mack, Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz, Amari Cooper, and Yannick Ngakoue have all been traded. Depending on how things shake out, Hill could be the next superstar on the move.
The speedy wideout has teamed with Travis Kelce to form a top-end receiving duo for Patrick Mahomes. Teams limited Hill on deep routes this past year, dropping his yards-per-catch figure to 11.2, but he still managed career-high 111 receptions with 1,239 yards.
Beyond those two, the Chiefs haven’t gotten tremendous production out of their other targets. They’ve taken some steps to revamp their unit, including the recent additions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Corey Coleman. Still, if you subtract Hill from the group, the Chiefs’ WR depth chart consists of Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Josh Gordon, Justin Watson, Cornell Powell, Dieter Gehrig, and Corey Coleman. If the Chiefs trade Hill, they’ll likely aim for a difference maker in the draft.
Despite his off-the-field controversies, Hill has been absolutely outstanding over the course of his career. Over the last six seasons, Hill has 479 catches, 6,630 receiving yards, and 56 touchdowns to his credit.
Leave the Chiefs to go to the trash organizations in MIA and NY. Two teams where careers die off.
I doubt the Chiefs would trade him in the conference. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if he ends up in Green Bay?
I don’t think they care if it’s to Miami or NYJ. Both teams are garbage and won’t hurt them.
If Green Bay doesn’t make a call , Aaron Rodgers might retire
He went to the Dolphins
You Idoit, just remember the chief’s was once a crappy team. Learn your facts!
I hope he goes to NY so he can go off to obscurity.
Great football player, trash person. I mean I hear Cleveland is compiling a group of trash pandas. Maybe that’s an option
Love all of this comment
He probably saw the money Davante Adams got, then saw what Christian Kirk was getting and figured he’s gotta make more than him at the least. Chiefs probably said “we’ll pass”.
Chiefs reportedly offered him more than Adams according to Ian Rapoport. So it’s kinda weird.
Man wants to get paid. He’s already got his Super Bowl ring, it’s understandable. Mecole Hardman is no Tyreek but he should continue to progress and obviously Mahomes will make their WR core look good any given Sunday. Wasn’t aware of this situation brewing previously but if the Chiefs can flip him now while his value is high they should get a nice return and continue to succeed.
Guys a douche but Imagine not paying him. Lol he’s half the reason mahomes is good thinking juju could fill those shoes is laughable.
Yeah…okay. He’s half the reason Mahomes is good? Really? That’s just a bad take.
I see your thinking hope your wrong
I’m sorry but looking at that roster and the picks they have coming, I wouldn’t even worry.
I’m a Baltimore fan, I’d be happy if the Chiefs tumbled. But there is no reason to assume a guy who has been no worse than the second best team in his own conference is suddenly not good because Hill is gone.
The Davante Adams deal with the Raiders has now set the market to “overpay” receivers. The foolish teams will pay exorbitant prices and kill their salary cap space for years. No doubt Tyreek is a great talent. However, he is dependent on other players including the OL AND more importantly a great QB. Let’s see what happens when he finds out Patrick Mahomes ain’t coming with him. Watch Davante’s numbers decline when he realizes this ain’t Fresno St. and that Carr is nowhere near Aaron Rodgers. Don’t get me wrong. They should grab the money for those foolish enough to pay them, but buyer beware.
So worn Adams and hill gone you can say we will see Rodgers and Mahomes drop off because me thinks Adams and hill are kinda good
Comments made while drunk often make the most sense.
Did you even look at the raiders deal with davante adams? His cap hit is half of what was initial reported with void years and signing bonus to reduce the cap hit. The same contract model was drawn up for chandler jones leaving them with flexibility to keep adding
@metsie- I have a feeling Adams knows what he’s getting into with Carr. I think he’ll do just fine there.
Chiefs fans think they are going to get two 1sts, a 2nd and an active player for Hill. Delusional. No way any team gives up more for Hill than what Adams cost – a 1st and a 2nd. Hill prob worth two 2nds
I think they’ll get the same as Adams – as Hill comes with baggage and a huge price tag – but is arguably among the top 3 receivers in the game at this instant.
Respectfully disagree. Hill’s value is built on speed. Adams’ value is built on precision. The latter skill set always ages better. Hill will fetch a nice return but I’d be surprised if any team gives up a 1st and 2nd for him when that team will also have to give him a big contract. Then again the Jets in particular don’t make great decisions.
Aaaaand I was wrong. So wrong.
Haha
Man that’s a bad move for a team to take on Hill who is very likely about to get PAID. Speed does not age well. This is the type of deal that puts teams in a hole in two years. You’ll trade a 1st and 2nd, sign him to a ridiculous dollar figure because you have cap space, he won’t be nearly as good as he was in KC (because the team and QB aren’t nearly as good), he’ll look like a burden, and they’ll dump him for a 6th (if they even can) and Jets fans will groan.
Smart move on the Chiefs. Hardman isn’t Hill, but he’s a burner and looks ready for bigger workload on a cheaper deal. Cash in on Hill while his value is high.
For the love of God Indianapolis please make an actual effort to improve the receiving corps.
Why would the Jets give a #1 and then pay him 25M+ when they can pick any of this years WRs at #10. It’s all a crap shoot anyway
This just screams Colts especially with the 1 year of Matt Ryan.
If Irsay was serious about being “all-in” it doesn’t get much more all-in than trading for Ryan and Hill.
Colts would make a ton of sense, but they don’t have a first rounder to trade this year.
Are the Chiefs insistent on draft picks this year?
2023 theyre set to lose Orlando Brown Jr, Juju, Hardman, Thornhill
2024 theyre set to lose Jones, Ford, Clark, Gay Jr, Snead, doubt they pick up Clyde Helaire option as things currently stand.
So future picks, 2023 and 2024 draft, would be nice to have in your back pocket for a rainy day.
They’re a win now team trading away a premium player and a draft pick now is worth more than a draft pick later. Indy would definitely be outbid.
Why would they get less? He’s almost two years younger than Adams and teams don’t really care about the other stuff if nothing comes of it and if someone is a good teammate, which he seems to be. They’ll get a first and a second or they just won’t trade him and keep him for the year. They can franchise him next year if they wanted too and trade him then.
They have the leverage at the moment.
I’m also not saying this as if I agree with trading for Wide receivers for a bunch of picks because I think it’s silly when the WR coming out are pretty damn good. But if they receive a crap offer. They’ll probably just keep him.
As a Jets fan, I say let the Dolphins have him. Better to slightly reach for a WR at #4 or just take one at #10 than spend all that draft capital and money on a win now player with all that baggage when the AFC is so, so stacked.
Also, it would be funny for the Dolphins to spend two first round picks on Jaylen Waddle one offseason and then spend big to acquire Waddle’s most optimistic comp the next. Two Spider-Men pointing meme.
Trade him to the Jets and switch all draft picks. 9 picks for 9 picks. Plus they get Hill.
I appreciate the absolute chaos of this idea.
Well that’s a boatload of picks the Dolphins are getting back. Wow!
As a giants fan best case scenario is a trade to the Jets for the 4 as the Giants better not liking WR in the first round
Dolphins for a 1st, 2nd, and three other picks.
Andy Reid isn’t coming with him, so you have to consider that. Hill was basically a gadget guy in college who he has made the center of the league’s most prolific offense. He just knows how to use players in a way that most teams can’t duplicate. Just look at Hunt since he got kicked off their team. You’re going to be paying him $29 mil a year, so there will be some pressure to make it work too.
