Sebastian Joseph-Day is switching teams, but he won’t have to move all that far. The former Rams defensive tackle is signing with the Chargers, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter).
It’s a three-year deal worth $24MM, including $15MM in guaranteed money.
The 2018 sixth-round pick had spent his entire career with the Rams. After being inactive for every game during his rookie campaign, the defensive tackle established himself as a consistent starter between 2019 and 2021. The defensive tackle started 31 games during his sophomore and junior year, and he started another seven games in 2021. He missed the second half of the campaign while dealing with a torn pectoral, but he managed to return in time to play in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory.
In total, he finished last season with 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, and a career-high three sacks.
The Chargers are loading up on defense. The team has been one of the most active teams, adding Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson, and Austin Johnson.
Dang the Chargers are doing some serious work on their defense!! If Herbert is able to continue progressing, and they’re able to continue both passing and especially running the ball effectively, then the Chargers just might be some serious contenders in the AFC..
Shoring up their run defense, AND just their defense as a whole can make this team DRASTICALLY better!!
Chargers should try trading back let’s say give up the 17th for say the Falcons 43rd and 58th picks.
Then take DeMarvin Leal, Jalen Wyndermyer and then with their 79th get John Metchie.
That defence is going to be really tough and Leal will also be a good addition to that unit. Wyndermyer will be a really solid TE, giving her eyes another blocker and catching option.
Then Metchie can be battle Palmer for the third choice receiver after Allen and Williams, giving them 4 good WR options.
Then after that grab a couple o lineman projects in the later rounds.
That defence will be elite, give Herbert more quality catchers and then hope the line holds
Disagree. That 17th pick, if it yields them Davis would be a huge addition for their defense. Not giving up a potential impact player for #4’s and backups.
17 for 43 and 58 is a horrible trade for the chargers
Do you think the Chargers will target Davis at 17? Inquiring Steeler fan wants know. I’ve seen Davis mocked to them a lot at 17. Ironically I liked SJD as a FA pick up for the Steelers.
I do. He’s a difference maker, and would add even more athleticism to their defense. Let’s hope he’s there.
Jordan Davis would, unfortunately for any other team wanting him, fit perfectly as the Chargers new NT/DT. You want to talk about committing to stopping the run, there isn’t another single player in this draft that will impact an opposing team’s running game like Jordan Davis…
Jordan Davis at 17 is a steal for the Chargers. With JC Jackson, Asante Samuel Jr., and Derwin James patrolling the secondary, Murray Jr. in the middle, Bosa and Mack as the edge rushers, and then Day, Johnson, and Jordan Davis rotating in the middle the Chargers Defense would INSTANTLY become one of the best in the league..
Honestly though, now, I could really see them either targeting a WR like whoever falls out of Jameson Williams, G.Wilson, or D.London, OR if they REALLY want to improve their defense all around, they could draft NAKOBE DEAN to be their sideline to sideline tackling machine. He could also help cover TEs and slot receivers well, and he hits the hole hard in the running game.
Dean will slip in the draft, but it is only stupidly because of his height and average arm length, but whichever team that drafts Dean they’re getting a team captain and a 10 year probowl caliber MLB stud!!
So, honestly, with Johnson and Day signed now, drafting Jordan Davis might be overkill for the Chargers. They will likely look at either WR or a LB like Lloyd or Dean..
Unfortunately, given his incredible performance at the combine, Jordon Davis won’t fall to 17. Even though Derwin James fell to 17 & Rashawn Slater fell to 13 Davis sealed his early 1st rd fate to the top 10 in the draft. Given that, the Chargers who have leaned hard into defense in free agency, won’t trade back but will draft a deep threat WR at 17.
