Following the sudden news that Todd Bowles will be taking over as the Buccaneers head coach, we’re learning that the former defensive coordinator got a new contract. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter), the Buccaners are ripping up the final two years of Bowles’ contract and replacing it with a new five-year pact.

Bowles joined the Buccaneers as defensive coordinator in 2019, and following two strong seasons with the organization, he earned a new three-year deal last August. The new extension was finalized earlier today (per Schefter).
We learned earlier this evening that Bruce Arians was stepping down as Tampa Bay’s head coach and would be transitioning to a front office role. Following the news, Bowles released a statement thanking the Glazer family for the opportunity.
“I am appreciative of the Glazer family and Jason Licht for having faith in me to take on this role, and to Coach Arians for his support and guidance over the past four decades,” said Bowles (via the team’s website). “Tampa has become home for my family, and we are excited to remain part of this community for years to come. As an organization, we have all the pieces in place to continue the winning standard that has been established here in recent years. I am eager to get started with our players, coaching staff, and front office in preparation for the 2022 season.”
Bowles’ previous stint as a head coach didn’t go so well. He spent four seasons as the Jets head coach, including a first season where the Jets finished 10-6. However, New York collected only 14 total wins over the next three seasons, leading to his ousting. After taking over as the Buccaneers defensive coordinator, the team has ranked among the best defenses in all of football.
Good for him. He deserved a shot to be head coach with a high functioning organization that wasn’t scraping the bottom of the barrel for QB ideas before taking out a mortgage for Sam Darnold.
Now the def won’t W
Because…?
How it the same team from last year playoff team. If they didn’t have brady sure but they do
Horrible coach. Brady won’t win another ring with this clown.
you named yourself aptly sir
Better reserve 0-4 now
And so on….
As your name fits also…..Bowles was terrible with the Jets, of course that organization speaks for itself, but he did nothing to distinguish himself as HC other than offer TERRIBLE time management, and head scratching press conferences amongst a host of other in game, and post game gaffs….good luck TB…sure Brady is really thinking about a trade now!
The Jets were on the verge of the playoffs in 2015. Win at Buffalo in Week 17 and they’re in. They lost, Pittsburgh won, Steelers made the playoffs on a tiebreaker.
One other thing: Bowles was 2-1 as interim in Miami in 2011, the second of those wins knocking the Jets out of the playoff picture in Week 17.
just because Bowles loses one game he’s a bad coach? I don’t think so.
I’m sorry but how many coaches have died with the Jets? They are right there with the Browns. Can’t judge a coach by how he did with the Jets.
They weren’t winning another with Arians either
Really glad Bowles got another opportunity after a horrible situation in NY. But honestly wonder why the didn’t choose Leftwich after he was such a hot commodity. Wonder if he (Byron) will stay past his year
Probably because of bowles past head coaching experience
My man
Another words better the devil you know than one you don’t? His past HC experience with the Jets ended badly and was pretty terrible in total context.
A good Defensive coordinator but bad HC….wait and see!
Brady would make any OC look good. For example, Charlie Weis and Josh McDaniels haven’t fared well in HC jobs
Guess you never watched a Jets game when he was HC right when you say he basically deserved another HC opportunity?
My thought is they gave it to Bowles because he’s a defensive guy. Brady is likely going to have a lot of input on offense, and I think that’ll be Brady and Leftwich’s baby. Bowles will probably be a HC mostly just responsible for defense and special teams.
Can’t wait for those post game press conferences. He will mumble his way through another loss. Not sure he is a head coach.
Two years too long. As soon as Brady retires this team will return to mediocrity.
Don’t really care but this is odd? A team hires a coach without a process? They aren’t required to search under the NFL hiring guideline rules? Don’t know the new coach, didnt know the previous coach personally? Certainly read and follow them. So if any team simply replaces the HC with an assistant a process is foregone? OR…..is it acceptable because this coach meets the NFLs profile so established protocol gets swept under the rug?
Good for him. He deserved another chance
That’s a picture of Kasey Rogers, not Bowles.
