It’s no secret that the Broncos will be in the market for a new quarterback. In his media availability Tuesday, general manager George Paton confirmed that the team will be active in adding a signal caller (video link via Denver7’s Troy Renck).
Paton made it clear how open the team is to exploring all options, something which could be made easier by the fact they have 11 picks in the upcoming draft, starting with the ninth selection. When specifically asked about the current QB situation the team is facing, he reiterated that change could soon be coming.
“It’s the most important position in sports, so we’re always looking”, he said, noting the presence of 2019 second rounder Drew Lock on the roster. “But we’re always looking. And we’re [going to leave] no stone unturned to find that guy. We know we need better play out of the quarterback position, so we’re going to be aggressive”.
Pending free agent Teddy Bridgewater was the team’s starter in 2021 (after winning a training camp competition with Lock), making him the latest in a long line of attempts to find a permanent successor to Peyton Manning. His play, while on par with what the team would’ve expected given his prior stops in the NFL, wasn’t enough to end the team’s playoff drought.
New head coach Nathaniel Hackett is among the reasons Denver has been listed as a potential trade destination for Aaron Rodgers, though Green Bay could still end up being where the reigning MVP plays next year. If not Rodgers, the team could look to acquire a veteran such as Jimmy Garoppolo, or turn to the upcoming draft. On that point, 9News’ Mike Klis tweeted that the team had formal interviews with this year’s QBs on Monday night at the Combine. Given their position in the draft order, Denver could have its pick of the class, which is headlined by the likes of Kenny Pickett, Sam Howell and Malik Willis.
As one of the biggest players in the QB market, the route Denver takes to find someone new under center will dictate much of the rest of the offseason, both in the Mile High City and beyond.
Cause they can’t draft one I hope hire all those packer coaches they don’t get Aaron Rodgers
I don’t think Rodgers leaves Green Bay, after all that’s happened since the start of last season. I think Denver would be where he’d have the best shot on a new team, however.
That said, I hope for the Broncos’ sake that they don’t panic and draft one of this year’s QBs with a high pick just because they need one. It would be Drew Lock all over again-overdrafting for need without regards to actual capability. If they can’t get Rodgers, and if a trade will cost them valuable picks, it’ll likely be better to try and sign someone and maybe spend a lower pick on someone like Carson Strong.
Really, they should be looking at Gardner Minshew. I would wager that he could be had for a reasonable price, and might give them enough to be a viable option.
Drew Lock was slated to be a first round pick. The Broncos drafted him in the second round. Now if you said Paxton Lynch, I would agree with you.
And Lock fell, because he wasn’t really suited for the first. What I mean to illustrate is that Lock was overdrafted because the Broncos had a need. I don’t think that many people would consider Lock’s career so far as worthy of a first or second round pick.
Also, you and that first commenter… are y’all related?
Minshew would be a good buy low option who could surprise a few. I think they don’t end up with Rodgers and don’t want to overpay for Watson or Russ. They already know what Teddy is, Tribisky and Dalton may get a look at but I’d suggest taking a long hard look at the draft prospects and hope one falls down.
Cause even if Rodgers plays out the season and then hits FA next year then you can be in with a shout if you don’t commit heaps of money to a starter this year.
Agreed.
Absolutely!! Minshew us a good QB. I don’t know why he isn’t mentioned more. He would be an improvement for at least a quarter of NFL teams, if not more.
Enough half measures for the Broncos. They need to go all out for a QB. Their last 6 seasons have been completely wasted because they had zero plan at the position. Trade 3 firsts for Watson if you have to.
A trade for Watson would be the worst thing ever, both because of his legal problems, and what you would have to give up to get him.
I’m a Packer fan advocating for a Rodgers trade to Denver. This year Broncos have 2 picks in the 2nd 3rd 5th and 7th rounds.
Send Denver’s 1, 2, 3 and 5 this year and their 1 or 2 next year.
Then Pack should tag and trade Adams to Raiders or Chargers or anyone else for best offer.
Then sign the FA’s they need and fill up on the draft haul.
Hope they can figure out QB by 2023.
Better than putting all your chips in on aging, weirdo Rodgers.
Not gonna get anywhere near that kind of haul for Rodgers. A First and Second this year maybe a 2 next is more than fair considering the 1st is number 9 overall.
Dumbest idea I’ve heard in ten years. Just dumb. Go back to Madden.
Rodgers might be the MVP, but that is a huge amount to give up, even for him.
You say Rodgers is a weirdo, anything specific for that conclusion? I never liked the guy until he stood up for his God given right to choose what goes into his body.
He’s a hero for standing up to the throngs that chose the experimental shot and are now criticizing him.
All this Rodgers talk but he wasn’t won anything in 12 years. World of talent around him and like several before that has he doesn’t rise to the occasion. Plus who would want his psycho personality on any team.
Well gosh, it’s almost like winning Super Bowls is hard and only one QB per year can win one.
Well, he’s been paid like he’s that “one QB per year” and he talks like he’s that “one OB per year”. Would you write the same thing about Tom Brady?
What?
Rodgers is currently just ahead of Jared Goff in terms of salary (seventh in the league).
We’ll send you Kirk for a 1st rounder.
You can have Kirk for the extra 2nd, 3rd & and 5th….
Kirk Cousins is another almost good enough quarterback. How many playoff wins does he have? He’ll just get another coach fired.
The Vikings were scoring points with Cousins. The problem was that a once formidable defense has been giving up more points for the last two plus years.
I think they should move some of their surplus of assets this year to upgrade the D and o line and just take the best player at #9. Get another stop-gap, mid-tier QB and prep your squad to put your QB of the future to be in the best situation to succeed.
Minshew has performed well when he’s played. I’m surprised at how little he’s been supported to this point. For a guy with a career 41-12 TD-INT ratio and a 63+% comp% it’s really shocking. He’d be the guy I’d target, show him support and build a team around him with all those assets to set him up for success. Then reassess in two years.
Duhhh trade for RuSsElL WilSon! I’m an idiot.
this screams attempt for a trade turned into Teddy Bridgewater re-signing
Teddy Bridgewater is a ticket to missing the playoffs.
Minshew
With Fangio the Broncos at least had someone who could build strong defenses. Denver will now need a QB who can put up 40+points to win games and neither Bridgewater or Minshew can do that on a regular basis.
