The Bears will allow Allen Robinson to reach free agency without a franchise tag (Twitter link via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com). The Bears cuffed the wide receiver last year at a rate of $17.9MM, but they’ll pass on the chance to do it again with a 20% bump.
Poles has told reporters that he wants to “be selective in free agency” — apparently, that means moving on from Robinson, a talented wide receiver that has clashed with team brass throughout the years. His dissatisfaction with Matt Nagy was apparent last year and his production was nowhere near his once stellar work. In 2021, Robinson tallied 38 catches for 410 yards and one touchdown, down from his 1,100-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020.
Now, Robinson has a chance at a fresh start and an opportunity to pick his next quarterback. He’s unlikely to get something in the range of $20MM — the would-be value of his 2022 tag — but he should still be able to land somewhere around $15MM/year on average. Despite his challenging 2021, a three-year, $45MM deal doesn’t seem out of reach for Robinson given his overall track record.
Meanwhile, the rest of the wide receiver market is starting to take shape. The Buccaneers are still working on a long-term deal with Chris Godwin, but they plan to franchise tag him if that doesn’t come to fruition. Meanwhile, the Packers are prepared to do the same for Davante Adams, though we might not know for sure until the 4pm ET/3pm CT deadline today.
What am I missing here? This guy is a terrific receiver. Nagy seemed to freeze him out of the offense last year. Wouldn’t Robinson, Mooney, and Kmet make for a good jumping off point for a receiving corps? Maybe he wants to move on but I think a new coach, new O.C. revives this guy.
Seems like that bridge is burned. He wants to win.
Not terrific at $20M per season
He is a terrific receiver but his effort last year wasnt there. As a Bears fan certainly wi miss the playmaking but I dont think he provided a professional effort at all last season.
He’s one of the most overated WR’s in the league, he’s does nothing the past two seasons, NOTHING. I’ve watched every single Bears game, and this guy is not 20m+ WR he calls himself, I hate hearing the “He does not have a QB excuse.” If Darnell Mooney was able to do more then him, with the same QB’s, there’s a bigger problem here. Darnell Mooney is the future, he has a amazing connection with Fields, he almost singlehandly won us that Ravens game (before our defense fell apart) And he is much much cheaper, cut bait, let Robinson walk. He’s a distraction in the locker room and we don’t need him.
I really hope Robinson still has some top form left and finally gets to play with a good QB.
He’ll probably ball out elsewhere, but from the Bears’ perspective getting the comp pick is better than giving big money to a guy who is gonna mail it in cuz he doesn’t wanna be there.
The Bears always try to play financial hardball with their top talent while wasting big bucks on bums like Mike Glennon. Then they wonder why they aren’t winning division titles.
Robinson is not worth the money, Bears fans should be very happy the Bears did not bite and let him walk, we have a very good replacement in Darnell Mooney, who has performed much better then Robinson in the past two years, and already has a amazing connection with Fields, trust me (I watched the Bears this year) Mooney will have these stretches where he’ll carry the offense, (He almost won us the Ravens game before our defense fell apart.) It is good we cut bait, and have more cap space now.
Then I will have to invite you to visit Reddit’s Chibears subreddit. They are saying Mooney need to go badly. He has underperformed ever since the Bears got him. He had flashes of greatness but most of the time he faltered and doesn’t make the catches half of the time.
Hey, not my words, but that’s what’s being said around the chibears subreddit. Don’t shoot the messenger.
Yea that’s weird… 1055 receiving yards with a not that good qb is amazing for a 5th round WR.
Perfect fit for the Patriots
Indy?
I loved arob until last season he just pouted on the field didn’t run routes hard didn’t give a semblance of effort. Finally moved on from Mitch and now you quit trying ? Go. Just go.
