Current Steelers’ general manager Kevin Colbert, who will be stepping down from his role after the 2022 NFL Draft, held a conference call with reporters today that produced quite a few nuggets of information.
Colbert expounded a bit on their moves to replace longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He explained that Pittsburgh didn’t want to sacrifice draft capital in order to add a veteran quarterback, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN. This led them to target Mitchell Trubisky, who they were able to sign in free agency for a very reasonable price. Pryor reported that he went on to say that signing Trubisky does not preclude them from taking a quarterback in the Draft.
Colbert claimed they have starters at every position except for strong safety, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, while failing to mention any specific targets to fill the role. Kaboly did note that Colbert said they’ve focused on targeting “young veteran players” in free agency.
Commenting on his eventual replacement, Colbert said they’ve completed the first round of interviews with 16 candidates and that they intend to start the second round of interviews after the Draft, according to Pryor.
Here are a few other rumors from the AFC, these concerning the Broncos of Mile High:
- With the addition of linebacker Alex Singleton, the Broncos will give linebacker Baron Browning a look at outside linebacker, according to Mike Klis of 9News. Browning went back and forth a bit between the positions at Ohio State, so he should be able to make the switch without too many issues. He’ll work with new outside linebackers coach Bert Watts.
- Klis also reported that new Broncos’ quarterback Russell Wilson will have a say in the tailoring of the new offense. Wilson’s lack of agency in Seattle was a great frustration for the veteran quarterback and new Broncos’ head coach Nathaniel Hackett will make sure that isn’t the case in Denver.
Russell Wilson is an OC killer. That coaching position was a revolving door in Seattle and it looks like that will continue in Denver.
On one hand, I think that Wilson can be strenuous to coach (as evidenced by what you stated), but on the other, he is now going to an offensive coach already used to compromising with an elite QB. He did have some legitimate gripes in Seattle about their offensive line investments, or lack thereof. I could see it going either way in regards to how he gels with his coaching in Denver.
should be a lot of QBs avail r2
really hoping steelers don’t waste r1 on Malik
too many better options at DT/WR
really think steelers can contend this year with an average Mitch .. but only if they address other areas of need in the draft, namely DT (hopefully one of the Georgians)
Unfortunately for Pitt, I doubt the Georgia DTs will be available, but their presence has pushed some other talented players down the draft boards. One should be there, if Pittsburgh so chooses.
I agree about wasting a pick right now on QB. There are a few offensive line prospects that the Steelers need to look at, as well as wideouts that could also help. The safety need is as stated, and Heyward will likely need to be replaced at some point soon. I think that Pittsburgh can make a lot of good calls at non-quarterback positions.
either of the Georgia DTs top my list .
but if neither is there then agreed other positions move down the board as a result.
Chris Olave definitely an option there, and adding a r1 WR makes this relieving group dangerous.
as far as other positions, here’s some questions..
is a tackle that slips to 20 actually going to overlap the development of Chuks and Moore , both young developing guys with a lot of nfl experience under their belts given their tenure.
is there a safety worthy of taking that early , when a capable run stopping Safety will surely be available in the mid-rounds?
I also think despite the additions at center, Linderbaum is still a great backup choice … green may never be useful, and the kid we brought in from Minny seems like a good backup/average starter but nothing special
so what I’m really saying there is the same thing I started with,,,
selecting a QB in R1 in this draft is a waste…
plenty of viable options for improvement.
.. and literally might be able to get Pickett etc. r2 since there’s so many similarly rated QBs in this draft with only a handful of teams needing help in that area.
It’s a luxury that steelers can take Howell or whoever may drop to 52 , and yet not take a QB at all and still have a full QB room come Fall
