Charvarius Ward is signing with the 49ers, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). The cornerback confirmed the news on Twitter.
It’s a three-year deal worth $42MM, including $26.7MM in guaranteed money.
Ward joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee in 2018. After seeing time in 13 games as a rookie, Ward ended up starting 16 games in 2019 for the eventual Super Bowl champs. Ward finished that season with 74 tackles, ten passes defended, and two interceptions. He also added another nine tackles in three postseason games.
The 25-year-old started 13 of his 14 games in 2020, finishing the year with 51 tackles, one sack, and six passes defended. Then, he started in each of Kansas City’s three playoff games, collecting 18 tackles. He ended up inking his second-round tender with the organization last offseason, and he proceeded to start 12 of his 13 games in 2021, collecting 67 tackles, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. He also got into all three playoff games.
If he can stay healthy. He good depth. He better be worth the money
For that contract, that’s not depth. That’s starter money. He better be worth it.
Wow talk about a payday for an udfa good for him and his family generational wealth
Well he played for kc and started most of the time he played. Idk if he worth that much. His stats don’t scream 42 mill but we will see
He’s not going to be a star but he’ll be a great opposite corner.
Look at the 3 years and 27 guaranteed…that’s the real money given out..
Ward will he perfect with the 49ers multiple schemes. Also, with Moseley and Thomas as their ummediate depth, in Nickel situations, Ward and Thomas can lineup outside and this will allow Moseley to work in the slot as well…
D.Ryans really earned my trust last season, and if this is the man he wanted, I trust him wholeheartedly!!
Also, they were able to sign Ward, instead of signing a 32-33 year old, older CB who could easily lose a step either this year or next.
One could make the argument that Ward’s best days are ahead of him, ajd thats especially the case with the 49ers excellent pass rush!!
I think richardc hit the nail on the head. Ward can certainly be a starter, and that’s a decent midlevel deal that doesn’t overcommit but obviously imparts starter expectations. He’s also young enough that, should this signing be fruitful, he may earn a second contract.
I think that he can play in the 9ers’ scheme, considering his usage in Steve Spagnuolo’s 4-3. Spagnuolo could put a lot of pressure on his corners with his blitzes, which is something that San Fran doesn’t (or hasn’t) done as much of. Ironically, Ward and Ryans will have at least something to relate to in regards to playing for Andy Reid (and Ryans being in the NFC East when Spagnuolo had his championship run with the Giants).
Edit: Ah, I didn’t realize how old this article was when I accidentally clicked it. My apologies.
Solid player wish him all the best
