With Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Carson Wentz now off the board, a number of QB-needy teams are switching their focus to Jimmy Garoppolo. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter), the market for Garoppolo has “heated up pretty quickly,” and the 49ers have already fielded several trade calls on the veteran quarterback.
However, trade talks are somewhat complicated by Garoppolo’s recent shoulder surgery. While the quarterback has expressed full confidence in returning to the field in time for training camp, he only went under the knife this week. As a result, teams are seeking full clarity on his current outlook before pulling the trigger on a deal.
When it comes to suitors, Rapoport mentions that the Colts are certainly “in the mix” for Garoppolo. After dealing Wentz to Washington earlier today, the Colts are believed to have “significant interest” in the 49ers signal caller.
The writing was on the wall for Garoppolo in San Francisco when the organization gave up a haul to draft Trey Lance with the third-overall pick. Despite an uncertain future, the veteran still went 9-6 in his 15 starts this past season (plus a pair of postseason victories). We heard recently that the 49ers were seeking a Day 2 choice for the 30-year-old. Garoppolo’s contract includes a $24.2MM salary in 2022.
somehow he just wins. teammates love him and hes been a man about basically being replaced in his prime.
Pornstars love him too
Lol enough to take care of him in a restroom evidently.
He’s good at the hands off
Colts gotta be atop the list right?
One would think. Win now roster, cap space, and no first rounder. If not Jimmy, what are the alternatives? Trade for Cousins? Sign Mariota or Winston and draft a QB after the first?
At this rate, Cousins won’t be going anywhere. They have nobody in house to replace him, unless Mond makes huge steps this offseason. The only way Cousins gets traded is if another QB is coming back to the Vikings (Watson did say he was open to a deal to Minnesota, for example)
Yeah, seems unlikely. But with a brand new regime, a roster with a bunch of holes, and several teams in need of a QB, I could see them wanting to start over.
I would think Jimmy is their guy unless they are just going to take a flyer on one of the FA QBs like Winston, Mariota, Fitzmagic, Tyrod, Trubisky, or Bridgewater. I can’t see them trading for Cousins and his $45 million because they’d be betting it all on him being the answer and wouldn’t have much of anything to spend on FAs after factoring in his cap hit and what they’d need to pay their draft picks.
I hears its down to Colts, Steelers and Saints from everything I’ve been reading.
Doubt Cousins is going anywhere this year
If Jimmy G’s the best option, I’d rather see the Colts give Ehlinger a look than give up anything of substance for 6-10 games of someone that’s no improvement over what we had. Why trade one guy just to give up more for an injury-prone lateral move?
Because Jimmy G, unlike Wentz, can win a game in the 4th qtr. a good QB doesn’t even need the coach in his ear telling him what play to call, he takes over the game, figures out the defense, calls the play at the line of scrimmage in no huddle, & scores game winners,
Wow, you’re talking about the same Jimmy G that played for San Fran??? Good luck with that. He’s an awful QB.
Awful? Nope.
He is certainly not awful…Did you watch CJ Beathard!?!…THAT WAS AWFUL!! lol
I’ll give him this much. Jimmy did play well week 18 against the Rams with the season on the line.
Wentz in the same situation against the Jags melted down.
Wentz’s entire team melted down against the Jags.
Ppl say that. But you go where your captain goes and if he’s gonna let his team fall apart that still holds him accountable for his part of the on field meltdown. As well as his leadership skills coming into question. If Carson had Jimmy’s injuries at the same of the season…. he wouldn’t have even played. Jimmy is a G. Sad to see him go
I mean the colts D did give up 26 points that game. That was the most points the Jags scored in a single game all season. Wentz was sacked 6 times and hit 10 times, so it does sound like an all around team loss.
Rams were up 17-0 on the Niners and the Rams were 45-0 under McVay when holding a halftime lead as a head coach.
Huh? Wow!! I guess it must be really difficult to look up a players stats. He started 15 regular season games last year. Where did you get 6 games from?
He’s been the starter five consecutive seasons. He has played in more than 6 games precisely twice. So, I guess I’m the one who didn’t just look, but actually pays attention.
*four seasons*…my bad on that one. I forgot about the Hoyer/Breathard debacle he sat behind. Still 50% of his career as a starter he’s failed to play more than 6 games.
You are paying even less attention than you think. He wasn’t traded to the Niners until the end of ’17. So, he wasn’t really with the team. The 2018 team was atrocious. Any QB would have gotten injured. Of those 4 seasons, he took the team to the NFC Championship Game twice, and to the SuperBowl once. He is 31-14 in starts. Name an available QB that would be better?
As a colts fan I want Mariota or Garroppolo but I think Mariota is the play. Mariota on a reasonable contract and $60MM to spend filling the rest of the roster out.
The draft picks and cap hit you take with Garroppolo tilts it to M for me. Either one I’ll be “happy” with given what’s out there.
i would think an extension and restructure of his contract would be in play to ease that cap hit. He wont command 25 million a year like before. Add some new money and move some existing money.
No surprise all these other QBs are going before him. Sucks balls
You always like to brag about what you are so talented in doing, sucking balls.
