The Rams’ splashy midseason acquisitions came through to help them to Super Bowl LVI, and the team in perpetual win-now mode wants both Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. back for next season.
The NFC champions are interested in extending both Beckham and Miller, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Both standouts are set to be free agents in March. Neither has hit the market to start a league year previously, though Beckham was available after his in-season Browns exit.
Projected to be more than $14MM over the cap for 2022, the Rams have not let financial limitations interfere with big-ticket moves. They have been forced to let role players walk in free agency annually, however. But the team paid up to keep Leonard Floyd last March, doing so after eating a then-record dead-money sum as a result of the Jared Goff trade. Interest in retaining Miller and OBJ also comes as Matthew Stafford enters the final year of his Lions-constructed contract. An extension that bumps Stafford toward the top of the quarterback market would stand to free up money in the short term.
Miller said recently, via SI.com’s Greg Bishop, he wants to stay with the Rams. Prior to the former Super Bowl MVP playing a game with his new team, the sides discussed extension parameters. No such talks with Beckham are known to have taken place. Both players have done well to help push the Rams back to the Super Bowl. The NFC championship doubled as Beckham’s first 100-yard game since 2019, while Miller registered seven sacks from Week 15 through the Rams’ divisional-round win in Tampa.
Beckham, 29, might have a greater interest in hitting the market, considering his unconventional November free agency was not centered around money. More money will be available come March, with the cap spiking and additional teams likely interested. The Rams also have Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods tied to lucrative extensions, and the former’s dominance this season makes his $15.75MM-per-year deal look like a bargain for the Rams. This stands to complicate Beckham staying in Los Angeles. Miller, 33 in March, has never been a free agent. He is finishing up his six-year, $114.1MM extension. Despite his advancing age, the future Hall of Famer would command considerable interest on the market.
Interesting how OBJ turn up in LA and can catch again….and doesn’t get hurt anymore….
Indeed it is, he literally did everything he could to get out of Cleveland including dropping some pivotal passes.
Well, Cleveland sucks and they’re going nowhere as long as Baker is there, so who can blame him?
To be fair; they weren’t going anywhere before Baker got there…. And aren’t likely to after he leaves. But, yeah… I can’t argue with the statement as a whole.
Also to be fair Baker took them further than the past 27 QB did so there’s that too….and OBJ being “hurt” too.
It won’t be long before he starts complaining about not getting the ball again. With Woods and Cupp next year, Beckham will be option #3. Number 3 receivers don’t get paid much
Miller I could see taking a cheap deal to run it back. He’s had a long career and earned lots of money. He’s probably just happy to stay on this team with Floyd Donald and Ramsey on the defence. Live in LA, and possibly win a couple rings before the end of his career.
OBJ on the other hand hasn’t had a huge extension or deal in the past like Miller. Plus would he be happy as a third WR? He’s be happy to be on a winning team and in LA but I don’t think he would get the money or touches he would be after. I could see him going across town to the Chargers. Herbert is a good young QB, gets to stay in LA and the chargers are still a winning team. Him and Keenan Allen would be a solid duo.
If there is one thing Syafford really knows how to do it is get his best WRs the ball and help them pit up some big numbers!!
Now it is Kupp and OBJ, but before whether it was Megatron, Marvin Jones, Golladay, Tate, Ebron, Riddick, etc. If I were a I’d want to have Stafford as my QB too.
OBJ would be smart to stay in LA. He’s already learned the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere, and his likelihood of having more success on another roster is extremely low compared to in LA.
In LA he has an offensive minded coach that’s going to make him a focal point of their offense. In LA he won’t have to worry about constantly getting doubled, because he’ll have one of the game’s best in Kupp lined opposite of him. In LA he will have access to all the outside deals and Hollywood action he could ask for, and then he will already be beloved by their fanb a se jfndj
So you think a team that is in cap trouble would use 40 million on 3 WR’s? Beckham will take the most money and I highly doubt that’ll be the Rams. If I’d have to guess, I’d say the Raiders. Davis loves names and Vegas has the lifestyle plus they need a speed guy
I too, would want to re-sign OBJ and Miller.
i think both can sign team friendly deals and both have been paid in their careers: obj $64 million & miller $127 million. obj in la has the potential to make a TON of $$$ off the field. it’s a perfect fit! also, it seems like stafford has a better connection with obj than woods which wouldn’t surprise me if woods is traded. i love woods but doesn’t make sense to have all three especially when van jefferson is on the roster as well. woods to detroit for a 3rd round pick to reunite with goff. the detroit gm was in the rams front office.
