Can the Packers still have a competitive team in 2022 if they retain quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams at market-leading salaries? Green Bay GM Brian Gutekunst says yes, adding that he’s “very confident about that,” (Twitter link via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic).

Even after restructuring Kenny Clark‘s contract, the Packers are facing an enormous numbers crunch. Aaron Rodgers’ forthcoming decision should provide some clarity for the offseason ahead, though it’s hard to imagine a future with both players at their expected rates. The Packers are reportedly prepared to use the franchise tag on Adams, though Gutekunst says that’s “not something we’d like to do.” Instead, he hopes to hammer out a long-term contract that works for both sides. By the same token, he didn’t rule out the possibility of Adams reaching the open market in March (Twitter link via Lily Zhao of FOX 6.
Meanwhile, Gutekunst declined to talk about a hypothetical Rodgers trade, should the QB request one. For what it’s worth, he did confirm that Rodgers was involved in the team’s decision to hire Tom Clements as its quarterbacks coach (Twitter link via Schneidman)— a sign that his relationship with Rodgers is in a better place than it was just one year ago.
NFL soap opera “As the way Aaron turns…’. Same for Tom. Make a decision and announce it. only takes 3 seconds to make one on the field right?
Why would Rodgers stay. For the last several years GB has done nothing to improve the offense around Rodgers.
“Last several years”. What does that even mean? You don’t think that team was one of the top scoring offenses in the league?
So drafting Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Elgton Jenkins, MVS, signing UDFA Tonyan and picking up solid pieces in Lazard, Billy Turner, Mercedes Lewis and his boy Cobb isn’t enough? That’s just the “last several years.” During his career they had Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Greg Jennings, Cobb, Jermichael Finley, Bakhtiari, TJ Lang, Brian Bulaga, etc.
MVS is terrible.
MVS is good for a 5th round pick. If they had only picked Higgins or Pittman instead of trading up for Love, Rodgers would have a great set of weapons.
If you believe everything you read, Rodgers listed MVS as a guy he wants on his team going forward, wherever that may be.
If he’s that bad (Injury prone sure) I doubt 12 would want him at all.
Bingo. MVS stretches the field. He’s not terrible at all. He’s definitely injury prone, though.
He’s not terrible. But that’s ONE of the listed players. Whatever.
You didn’t really list much, Cam. An UDFA that hei happened to be good is not much when you don’t have any depth at the position and he misses the whole season. Lewis is great, for a player in his late 30s who is mostly a blocker at this point in his career. I have tremendous respect for him but if Tonyan hadn’t have been hurt, Lewis likely would have been much less utilized.
Jenkins was a good pick. Dillon was a good pick. Jones was a good TE-sign. But those are three players on an eleven man offense-and one is a lineman that the Packers had to use at several different positions due to a lack of depth (a recurring theme here), and another is not a starter. Those receivers you listed are okay, but none are starters either and none are players whose production cannot be replaced by other players.
Your list of past talent is pretty irrelevant since none of those players have been in Green Bay for the last few years, which is the period we’re discussing. Calling Billy Turner “solid” is suspect at best, anyway, and you act as if all those players were present at once, which they weren’t, except for the first two years of his career. Besides, that’s a pretty pointless discussion. No great QB has ever succeeded without some form of talent, and nobody said Rodgers was any different. The point is that Green Bay could have done MUCH more to give themselves-not just Rodgers-better opportunities. They could have added better players, and they did not. They deserve criticism for that, especially in comparison with Tampa Bay or the Rams or the Titans or any other team that did not settle for what they had and improved their talent.
Isn’t it strange all the talent you’ve listed and only one Super Bowl to show for it.
To me it’s pretty clear I break the bank for Adams, trade Rodgers for a kings ransom and hopefully with in three years have a better cap situation and field a talented team (with or without a pro bowl/all pro qb) that can have the missing pieces added without creating another hole somewhere else in the roster.
It’s time to decide on whether the team wants to keep doing what’s been done for 14 years and get the same results or try something different for a better shot at future years
It was never broke so why fix it?
Do you think those are actually similar kinds of decision making?
On the field decisions typically aren’t about the next 3, 5, or 20+ years of their life.
And as much as I hate to defend Brady (in particular) how much of what we’re hearing is even hinted at coming from him? The media takes a lot of nothing and turns it into ‘possibly’ or ‘maybe’ and the readers and listeners take it as gospel. And I know this will probably cause some anger for you as well as others, but if it bothers you so much, ignore the stories. I personally change the channel (if I actually tune to them in the first place) when they start talking about will he do this or not do that as if they actually have a clue. And it goes triple for anything not directly related to football. It boggles my mind how invested people are in a celebrity’s personal life.
Yeah but I think we can all agree that our lives are empty if we don’t know everything about the Kardashians.
Not as empty as their heads
Do the right thing and trade both Rogers and Adams (after tagging him obviously). Even if they stay, next years roster will not be as talented as last years and we saw how that ended. Jumpstart the rebuild so better days aren’t so far away.
I’d love to see all sports be able to go over the cap to keep homegrown guys that were drafted and developed by a team. That would give more weight to hitting on draft picks and keeping a team together.
Let the Drama Queen go. He isn’t ever going to win anything but a Media Circus award. He is soft on the field and worried about his numbers. Something is not right with him with all the drama, not talking to his family, and all the “ Girlfriends” he goes thru. Everything is drama.
I mean, you can call him a drama queen, sure, but he has won four MVPs and a Super Bowl MVP.
It’s all about the rings kid. is
It’s really not. A lot of great QBs have one or fewer rings. Several great QBs have two rings but weren’t actually that good for one of them.
3(?) Girlfriends in what? 6 years..? I personally know people who’ve had that many divorces…and more supposed “serious” relationships besides in that amount of time.
And the whole not talking to his family thing is just laughable. When has he talked about it? When has his family? Do you want your personal quarrels talked about on here? Or better yet, have other commentors make up stuff?
Even if they pay up to keep Rodgers and Adams, they’re not in the worst state. They’ll probably have to dump both Smiths, but Gary has come along nicely and has one more rookie deal year plus a fifth year option. Same with Savage. Bakhtiari and Alexander are both locked in. Jenkins has one more rookie year deal. Hopefully Myers takes another big step in year two, which would be normal for a lineman. Maybe they can move money by extending Amos. Stokes looks really promising and has most of his rookie deal left. That’s a very strong core of talent at important positions. They have nine draft picks this year and the rest of the division is a mess. Moving on from Rodgers is a scary proposition, but if they can keep him and Adams, they really can do it without the rest of the roster being in that bad shape.
Alexander is eligible for an extension. It’s 1 of the “moves” I’ve read that can create more cap savings.
My bad. For some reason I thought that one had already gotten done.
Not that I’ve seen..yet. my guess is it will though, probably regardless of the Rodgers and Adams stuff.
More Rodgers click bait. Well done
