Much of the offseason in Seattle will be dominated by what the team decides to do with quarterback Russell Wilson. On the defensive side of the ball, though, another key decision will need to be made regarding free safety Quandre Diggs. According to John Boyle of Seahawks.com, a reunion is the goal for both sides.

Diggs has been a standout on an otherwise underwhelming Seattle defense since his midseason arrival in 2019. There have been offseason issues as recent as this past September regarding his contract status – namely, the lack of a long-term extension to the three-year, $18.6MM deal he was on when he was traded from Detroit. He did play the full season in each of 2020 and 2021, however, partly due to a compromise reached in the lead-in to this campaign.
In his two full seasons in Seattle, Diggs has established himself as one of the best playmaking safeties in the league. The former sixth-round pick recorded five interceptions in both years, as well as a combined 158 tackles and 17 pass breakups. The 10 interceptions are tied for the NFL lead during that span, and earned him his first two Pro Bowl selections. That production will garner plenty of suitors on the open market, if he reaches it for the first time in March.
The 29-year-old said there’s “no question” he wants to remain a Seahawk. “If we can make it work and it works out for both sides, and I feel fairly compensated knowing that I’m a two-time Pro-Bowler, [who received] All-Pro votes, and one of the best, if not the best free safety in the NFL – I have to be compensated as well, and I feel like I did everything the right way to be compensated as well. If it works out and they say they want to do it, let’s get it done“.
Head coach Pete Carrol has publicly expressed an interest in keeping Diggs, who suffered a broken leg in the team’s season finale. However, Seattle already signed Jamal Adams to a four-year, $70MM deal in August. Deciding to keep Diggs, then, would very likely give the Seahawks the league’s most expensive safety tandem. As The Seattle Times’ Adam Jude notes, their only other safeties under contract for next year are Ugo Amadi and Marquise Blair, both of whom are headed into the final year of the rookie deals.
If Diggs does hit the open market, he would join a free agent class that is also scheduled to include the likes of Tyrann Mathieu, Jessie Bates and Marcus Maye.
Pete Carrol is hilarious and totally respectable irl
I do believe Russell Wilson is under contract for a couple more years. Followed by 3 years of potential Franchise Tag designations. He has said on numerous occasions over the years and more importantly in recent weeks that he plans on being in Seattle for the remainder of his current contract and hopefully sign another contract with Seattle after that. So what exactly does Seattle need to do regarding Russell Wilson?
Maybe agree to restructure his contract? Brady made like $10M in 2021. Took a TEAM friendly deal so the Bucs would have the cap space to add pieces…. Yeah, we know, he gets sacked all the time and was is frustrated. Well…. how about takin a pay cut Russ.. I’m sure the needed $$ would go to said “pieces”…
He offered to restructure last offseason, when a lot of high paid players around the league were doing this to help free cap space. Seattle opted not to do this with Russell as they felt it wasn’t necessary, and ended up carrying something like 10 mil in cap space all season long.
Not sure what to think. He says he wants to be here but it is the usual BS they all say. Same with Carroll about him. If it is Wilson stays Pete leaves that would be my choice. A young guy with fresh ideas would be great. Pete can move up into the office and help with the draft. You don’t get lucky at QB often especially in the 3rd rnd.
GK Holiday et al…..imo the Hawks need to prioritize something they should’ve done years ago- focus on building a Top 10 O-Line. However Pete and John have shown they CANNOT build an O-Line through the draft so something needs to be done about their draft strategy.
Is Pete Carroll “wearing too many hats?” Does he need to delegate or hire someone, maybe “a young guy with fresh ideas” to help with his player development strategy? I don’t know. I do know the O-lines during Pete and Russell’s time have been league average AT BEST. Please change that
I know there a lot of people in the fan base who want to hit the reset button at QB but you simply can’t do that with this years NFL draft. There is no clear Franchise QB in this draft. Compassrose is right- we are lucky to have a QB like RW3. It would be sheer lunacy to trade him away.
Agree 100% with everything my man. I’ve thought the same thing since 2014 or so… I remember RW getting pummeled against the Rams and Cardinals his rookie year. I never remember seeing an OL so terrible and a QB get so destroyed… other than David Carr.
They must invest in the OL. Not the late round DT conversions, but seriously invest.
He’s welcome to go back to Detroit
Love to have him back
He’s one heck of a ball player… Diggs for a 5th round pick worked out pretty good for Seattle. Not sure who that pick turned into.
