Carson Wentz and Jimmy Garoppolo will be popular names on this website throughout the offseason, but their respective teams may have difficulties finding trade partners suitors. According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, interest in Wentz and Garoppolo has been “lukewarm as best.”
Wentz got the majority of the blame for the Colts ugly Week 18 loss to the Jaguars, and the quarterback’s decision to go through the season unvaccinated (which caused him to miss a week of practice leading up to the Colts’ Week 17 loss to the Raiders) drew the ire of some Colts decision makers, including owner Jim Irsay. Chris Ballard‘s noncommitment to Wentz exiting the season provided a fairly clear indication the team is not sold on its starter.
So, despite giving up a 2021 third-round pick and 2022 first to acquire the former Eagles QB, the Colts now have Wentz on the block. The Colts could save $13MM by cutting Wentz before March 19. Should Wentz stay a Colt, he will be attached to a $28MM cap number.
The writing was on the wall for Garoppolo in San Francisco when the organization gave up a haul to draft Trey Lance with the third-overall pick. Despite an uncertain future, the veteran still went 9-6 in his 15 starts this past season (plus a pair of postseason victories). We heard recently that the 49ers were seeking a Day 2 choice for the 30-year-old. Garoppolo’s contract includes a $24.2MM salary in 2022.
I could really see the Steelers grabbing one of these guys if the price is low.
They have the need, the cap space and Mason Rudolph as reasons to make such a trade.
WFT, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Denver, and Tampa Bay are the biggest teams in need of a QB.
Wentz isn’t much of an upgrade to Rudolph. Why give up pieces to stay the same?
Wentz is a substantial upgrade to Rudolph. With a strong support case of Harris Johnson Claypool Freiermuth and if they invest in fixing the oline Wentz would be a clear upgrade.
Wentz had more talent than that around him in Indy…
Not really
He had a better running back sure.
Better receivers? Not a chance
Better TEs? Doubtful
Better oline? If they were healthy, sure. But guys missed games all along the line.
Fellow Steelers fan I take it? Not a chance man.
OL: Significantly better despite injuries. SIGNIFICANTLY. Did you watch the hot mess the Steelers had out there.
Honestly, I’m not even sure we need to go further, but we can.
RB: Moderate advantage Colts. Again, not sure how this is debatable.
WR: Slight Advantage Steelers. Steelers receivers look great on paper. But Juju was hurt all year, and Claypool for the most part looked like Tarzan and played like Jane this year. Johnson is nice minus the dropsies that crept back late season, but so are Pittman and Hilton.
TE: Push. Ebron was worthless and hurt. Muth is a stud, but lets not pretend he gets used like Kelce or Kittle. Doyle & MAC are average starters. At the end of the day neither team uses their TE enough for this to really matter anyways.
It’s not even close. Steelers D should have been better LAST year, but was decimated by injuries.
If you think the Steelers have a better team aside from QB, you’re nuts.
Not a steelers fan at all.
Let me guess colts homer? Ty Hilton is a shell of his former self. Hes also 33. “Slight advantage” on wr is a horrible take
Taylor had 2200 all purpose yards last season. Najee Harris had 1700 all purpose yards last year. Considering workload and the fact the steelers have Dionate Johnson and others its not that big of a drop off.
Steelers TE group is better.
Only clear advantage colts have is oline. If healthy. Who cares how it looks on paper. If guys are out and youre playing backups thats not a good thing.
Haha no I am a Steelers fan bud. Watch all 17 games of horrendous O-line play and get back to me. Slight advantages at WR and TE make zero difference when your QB has 2.5 seconds to throw or be sacked.
Ben would have taken that Colts squad to at least the second round of the playoffs last year, and Ben stunk.
He sure did!
Anything is an upgrade over Rudolph.
While I agree, and that’s what my post claims….I am making the point that why bother? You’re not going to beat KC, Buff, Cinci or LAC with Wentz. So why give up anything of value? Steelers need a franchise QB and there’s not one in this draft. So roll with Rudolph, suck, and position yourself for 2023 when there will be better QBs available. But don’t give up draft picks and cap space to go 8-9….what’s the point?
Agreed, but with others on the team such as Watt, Fitz, etc. it wouldn’t hurt to get someone like Jimmy G for 2-3 years until that QB arrives. If, Watson was obtainable for a decent price, it could be an interesting move for the black and gold. Would help avoid a reboot.
There’s a lot of teams who would do well by picking up Garoppolo, even though his track record indicates that he’ll only be available for 12-13 games
Man, you’d have to be in a pretty dire situation to trade anything for Wentz at this point. So Washington, Pittsburgh, or Carolina?
He was not great in that final game, but that was a team loss. They collectively blew it. Wentz is gonna get a chance to redeem himself.
He was also horrendous in Philly the year before. I’m sure he’ll get more chances, but there’s not a lot of shine left on him.
How many chances is enough!!?? He’s shown by not being vaxxed he thinks only of himself. Plus he’s a sensitive crybaby. There’s no team in “me, myself & I.”
Jimmy G to the Steelers have said it for almost 2 years now.
As for Wentz I think he ultimately stays at the colts as their starter after a lengthy saga.
Jimmy G would be a nice 2-3 year solution until they draft a QB that can actually stick. Outside of Ben and Terry, they haven’t done very well, but when they get it right…
Jim Irsay is really going to trade a qb for pennies on the dollar, or get nothing if they cut him, all because he is upset 1 of the 9 players on the covid list was Wentz.
Not mad at any other players who wound up on the list and missed games, colts lost 8 of them, or played poorly due to being sick. Just Wentz.
Thought Irsay quit drinking.
Dude, Wentz wasn’t good enough to beat the team picking first in the draft when that’s all he had to do to make the playoffs, and he cost a first round pick. I’m pretty sure that’s why the Colts are upset.
Josh Allen would like a word about beating the Jags
Did you watch that Week 18 game?
i wouldn’t take Wentz in a salery dump
I would add the Texans and Seahawks as possible landing sites for these guys. Everything is on the table in Texas because of Watson’s status and Seattle seems to be the go to location for reclamation projects.
Why would the Seahawks want or need anyone of these two qbs?
Wilson is 33 years old and has been sacked over 400 times so it’s a small miracle he can still perform. The Seahawks are dead men walking if they have to rely on Geno Smith again.
I dont see hawks trading draft picks or players picking up those salaries for backup. I dont think Geno will be back either…will look at other options, but nothing this expensive.
Yep the Commanders are in need, but I’m not excited about the turkeys mentioned. Wentz just doesn’t have a clue and if you can’t do better then Grappo did with that 9er offense, then your the problem…. Good QBs are not easy to come up with
Wentz ended the year with 27 TD’s & only 7 int’s; which is pretty good; however, that being said, 3 of those int’s were horrendous. He doesn’t just have a gunslinger’s mentality, it’s like he has to try to make a play on every down. But when you’re in a tight game & need a drive to win; he can’t do it, it’s when he’s at his worst. He’s decent at scrambling, but runs kind of gangly & looks uncoordinated.
His only chance is to be humbled by last season, & work to improve his poor decision making. He came to Indy still thinking his style was good because his old coach Frank gave up a 1st & a 3rd for him & believed in him. Frank deserves some blame on last year as well.
One last comment, the homer who was comparing Pittsburgh & Indy & rated Indy’s RB’s as “moderately” better is smoking crack. Najee Harris is a good young RB, not great, but good. Jonathan Taylor is a bonafide stud, probably the best in the league, including Henry at full strength. He should have been the MVP, probably lost it when Wentz lost the last 2 games & thus the playoffs.
I knew Wentz was going to be an expensive mistake. They have two QB backups that could turn into good players if they would just look their way but no, they want that plug and play superstar. Idiots!
