After the Rams’ Super Bowl victory, questions around head coach Sean McVay‘s future continue. When asked about his intention of remaining with the team for the 2022 season – something he already addressed in the lead-up to the game – his response was “we’ll see”.

McVay gave that answer when speaking to Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times. It represents a stark contrast to the report before the Super Bowl from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that he is “committed to this team and coaching”.
As Chase Goodbread of NFL.com adds, McVay went on to say, “I’m just enjoying this moment right now. I’m really happy to be a part of this. Happy for that”. He also pointed out that winning a Super Bowl title might accelerate the process of his moving on from coaching. When asked if the championship would make it easier for McVay to leave the sidelines, he answered, “I think you could definitely say that”, according to Pro Football Talk’s Curtis Crabtree.
McVay, 36, became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl with the victory on Sunday. Considering it was already the team’s second appearance in the title game in his five seasons at the helm, the thought of retirement seems far less likely than an extension to rank him amongst the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.
Nevertheless, Rams COO Kevin Demoff said, “I would agree I don’t think Sean’s current pace is sustainable, in terms of how much work he puts in, if you want to have a family”, something that McVay has repeatedly referenced when asked about his plans. Demoff added, “A month away, two months away, from everybody and I think things will feel a lot better”. Time away from the game for McVay in the offseason will likely help shape his intentions, which will in turn play a large role in the Rams’ future decisions.
McVay is young enough that he could step away from the game for years and then come back into coaching and almost every team would do whatever it takes to get him.
Like vermeil did? Eagles to the booth to the Rams.
Like Gruden
Family is overrated!
J/k. I totally understand his situation. I wouldn’t fault him at all for stepping back for a few years.
Though he needs to let the Rams know. It puts them in a bad place if he signs a broadcasting deal in three or four weeks.
Gladys Knight apparently had the real dope on McVay before any of the NFL insiders. link to youtube.com
Everybody is talking about him broadcasting. He has made enough to just walk away and never work again. Isn’t the point of working to be able to stop . . .
I think it’s his passion for that game that’ll keep him around. If you’ve seen him in interviews, the man breathes football.
I think he just wants the opportunity to have a family for a bit, and have a less rigorous schedule so he could be around his kids. Broadcasting would give him that opportunity, or an analyst job somewhere.
Andrew for scrubs like us yes. But to have the work ethic to be 1 of 32 positions in the world at the young age he accomplished that feat at? People with that type of drive typically don’t retire when they could work for another few decades.
I certainly ain’t a scrub. I work as many as 75hrs a week to run a business so I get him. If I could retire comfortably right now I would in a heartbeat
If Amazon offers to pay him twice as much to work less than half as many hours, that could be an enticing compromise.
If he does opt to walk away, that’s something the Rams might have wanted to know before Kevin O’Connell committed to the Vikings. Maybe O’Connell pulls a Belichick/McDaniels, meh.
They have a much better in-house candidate in Raheem Morris.
Wrong.
Sorry if I trust a former head coach who got ten wins on a team led by Josh Freeman more than a guy who has never called plays.
Morris was impacted by bad drafts and an aging defense. He deserves another shot.
Morris also wasn’t half-bad with the Falcons an interim. He’s definitely a qualified leader and defensive schemer. However, I think the biggest adjustment would be maintaining McVay’s offense without McVay and I believe McConnell would have been key to that. Then again, maybe it won’t even matter
Let him walk. There are enough good young coaches that would come here and do a great job. Let’s be honest!!!! McVay isn’t a great OC and his play calling has been really bad some of the time. I love what he has done with the Rams but it won’t cripple the franchise if he isn’t around. He is like the Dodgers Dave Roberts, not a great coach but the players make him look great.
Yeah, ok. Is that why Jared Goff randomly transformed from garbage to above average as soon as McVay became coach?
This is all posturing by McVay to get a huge and I mean HUGE $$$$$ deal… He will become the highest paid coach and may be given a small percentage of the team ownership… Kroenke will do everything to keep him. Kroenke has a lot of debt to still make up…
