QB Mitchell Trubisky, taken by the Bears with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 draft, will always be compared to draftmates Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, who were selected that year at No. 10 and No. 12, respectively, and who obviously have enjoyed quite a bit more on-field success than Trubisky. Chicago declined Trubisky’s fifth-year option for 2021, and he ultimately had to settle for a backup job with the Bills, spending all of last season as Josh Allen‘s clipboard holder and Buffalo’s scout team quarterback.
All is not lost for the UNC product, however. Former Bears HC Matt Nagy received his walking papers last month, and Nagy’s inability to get much of anything out of his offense in his four years at the helm has reinforced the notion that Chicago’s issues may have had more to do with the coach than the QB. And as Katherine Fitzgerald of the Buffalo News recently wrote, Trubisky and the organization believe his year with the Bills has helped him grow as a player.
Brian Daboll, who spent the 2018-21 seasons as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator before recently being hired as the Giants’ head coach, said, “[Trubisky’s been] a good addition for us. I think he’s made strides in his game, both mentally and physically.” Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who appreciated Trubisky’s selflessness when running the scout team offense, also saw growth, saying, “[t]he way he comes to practice every day, you wouldn’t know that he’s not a starter currently in the league or the fact that he was a former starter.”
Trubisky himself said of the Bills’ offense, “[i]t’s a lot less restricted than what I’ve been in in the past. The quarterback has a lot more freedom to make checks, go where he wants with the ball, exploiting matchups and getting the optimal play for this team. So it’s been a really fun offense to learn, and I feel like it’s really quarterback friendly once you get it down.”
Although players like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Watson could be available on the trade market this offseason, there are teams that might consider signing Trubisky to compete for a starting job, knowing that they will at the very least have a quality backup. Clubs like the Steelers and Daboll’s Giants could make some sense in that regard, and Trubisky has also been loosely connected to the Browns in early rumors.
Interestingly, Bills GM Brandon Beane said he received some interest in Trubisky in advance of the 2021 trade deadline, but he rebuffed those inquiries because of Trubisky’s fit on a team that had designs on making a championship run. Beane understands that Allen’s physical style of play makes him more of an injury risk than other passers, and as such, he wants Trubisky back if the right opportunity does not materialize for him elsewhere.
“If anybody calls me about Mitch on another team, I’m going to give him a great recommendation,” Beane said. “And I’ve told him and his agent, if he doesn’t get what he wants, we’ve got a spot for him.”
Mitch> Danny Dimes.. bring him over Daboll
why are you comparing the two? they play different positions – Dimes is a RB.
idk what you’re talking about bro danny is clearly a wide receiver. him catching passes from mitch would be lethal
I think Danny was a left guard?
Mitch would be perfect for the giants. As you said daboll liked him as an Addition for buffalo. Jones went to duke and Mitch went to unc. Better than Glennon so I’d take him in East Rutherford
My grandmother is better than Mike Glennon.
“… who obviously have enjoyed quite a bit more on-field success than Trubisky”
Uh, Trubiskey has actually won more games and has a better winning percentage than Watson. Garbage time stats mean nothing…
Not sure I’d categorically dismiss Watson’s output as “garbage time stats.” And while QB wins in a vacuum are generally not a good way to measure success, they both have the same number of playoff appearances, and Watson actually has a playoff win. There’s a reason teams are willing to discuss blockbuster trades for Watson despite his off-field stuff, and why Trubisky needs to play his way back into a starter’s role. But hey, I’m rooting for Trubisky. Not his fault that Pace made a bad decision.
lmao Watson has been so, so much better than Trubisky it’s not even funny. Clown comment, bro.
Got what it’s worth, Mitch has 22 fewer sexual assault allegations..
Did you watch the Texans sans Watson this year? That should indicate his dearth of victories probably had more to do with surrounding talent
Your argument holds no water since a rookie QB and a career backup QB won the same number of games in 2021 with arguably a lesser roster.
So scoring 104 fewer points counts for nothing?
Ryan Tannehill won more games than Josh Allen in 2021. By your incredibly stupid logic, Tannehill is a better QB than Allen. It’s almost like football is a team sport and not an individual sport.
With all the QB question marks in the league this year, I’d be shocked if another team doesn’t give him a shot as a starter in 2022. I’d be surprised if the Bills can get him to resign since he should make more and have more opportunities elsewhere. That said, I’ll be happy to be wrong on this…he may have been the best backup we’ve had since Frank Reich.
Red Zone passer ratings:
Frank Reich 76.9
Mitch Trubisky 84.4
Nathan Peterman 114.4
Any stat that makes Nathan Peterman look good has to be trash
This guy would have to be Ryan Leaf bad to go #2 overall and still not be able to beat out Mason Rudolph.
I would take pretty much anyone over Rudolph next season. I’d take a mannequin too.
Was surprised to hear Todd Haley singing Trubisky’s praises on a local talk show with the belief that all he needs is a fresh start and better coaching. I’m in agreement that he’d be a real upgrade over what the Steelers currently have but the stubborn streak of Colbert and Tomlin are again on display so far
Whether they push the idea that they’re not looking for an available vet or that they’ll pay lip service to a local kid like Pickett and laud a QB from Liberty instead, the arrogance of these guys never ceases to amaze. The Bubby Brister era, part 2, is dead ahead
They seem to really want to find a mobile QB to develop. For better or worse Willis could be that guy. In any event they almost have to invest a draft pick in developing the right replacement QB for the long term, and in the meantime decide on the right bridge QB for the short term. And Rudolph is not the right choice.
It’s funny, isn’t it? Mobility is their focus but so much more goes into it. Lamar is a mobile QB but defenses learned how to play him in the second half of the season ( pre-injury). SF is about to get rid of Jimmy G for a guy who is mobile, athletic but who has experienced a lot of difficulty where passing and reading defenses are concerned
Again, not a big Pitt guy but if this is the prescribed route, Pickett fits the Burrow/Herbert model more than the other candidates
There’s tons of guys in the league that failed at their first stop. He’s too talented to not get another shot at some point. A two year deal in Atlanta makes some sense.
And 95% of those guys fail at their second stop too.
Steelers next QB?
Wouldn’t shock me, and I wouldn’t complain either. But on the other hand they already have one former first-round rebound candidate in Haskins, so it might make more sense to them to bring in someone with more experience, if they do bring anyone else in.
I’m still convinced that it will be Rudolph, Haskins and a draft pick in camp next season, and I for one am not discounting Haskins like many others have. Sure, Haskins may never amount to anything… but Rudolph is by now a known quantity who is extremely unlikely to improve much. We know what we’ll get. Haskins? He’s now had a whole year to learn things, and Tomlin seems to have a liking for him based on previous comments. Maybe this is a better fit for Haskins, maybe it isn’t.
It’s likely any draftee isn’t going to be ready to start Week 1. I just can’t see the Steelers deciding to spend what it takes to bring in a veteran stopgap or proven starter. And Rudolph at least to me proved last season that he shouldn’t be starting, although I fully admit that maybe Haskins shouldn’t be either. In any case, it’s going to be a long few years for Steeler fans, hopefully just a few, until they find the right QB.
Gotta say, what a classy way for Brandon Beane to act. “Get something if you can, I’ll do what I can to help, and if you can’t, we welcome you back with open arms.” VERY player respectful; I’d guess the biggest worry a player who is not currently considered frontline is a paycheck, and Beane relieved him of that worry.
Some of his fails can be attributed to Nagy but trubisky couldn’t read a defense nor anticipate a throw before the receiver made his cut to get open
He should sign with the Lions. Probably be his best chance to start and give Goff a little competition
