The 49ers are hiring Anthony Lynn as their new Assistant Head Coach (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). Lynn will be tasked with helping to guide the 49ers’ offense with a focus on the ground game, Schefter hears.
[POLL: Who Will Acquire Garoppolo?]
Lynn, 53, spent four years as the Chargers’ head coach. His highpoint came in 2018 as he guided the Bolts to a 12-4 record and a playoff win. Things took a turn after that, however. The Chargers went just 5-11 last season and 7-9 in 2020, losing a mind-boggling amount of close games in those final two campaigns.
Lynn spent the 2021 season as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, but head coach Dan Campbell didn’t invite him back for ’22. The Lions averaged just 16.8 points per game during Lynn’s eight games as the play-caller, and they failed to record a win during that time. In the following eight contests, they averaged 19.25 points per game, squeezing out two victories and a tie.
Still, Schefter hears that Lynn had a healthy market in this cycle, garnering offers in the pro and NCAA ranks. Despite his lackluster run in Detroit, he’s still regarded as a solid offensive mind, particularly when it comes to the ground game.
For now, Lynn is set to report to Mike McDaniel, though he’s also in the mix for the Dolphins’ head coaching job.
Maybe now the 49ers can finally develop a passing game. Something we haven’t had in 20 years. These heavy run oriented offenses can’t cut it. Why not go with something that works.
Did you see his primary focus is on the run game?
He coached Justin Herbert in 2020. Compare his numbers to Garoppolo’s.
A Super Bowl and NFC Conference game appearance in the last three years disagrees with your statement that “run oriented offenses can’t cut it”.
But yeah, will be nice to have the threat of a deep shot every now and then to keep opposing defenses honest and not stacking the box.
Hopefully Lance looks and plays less like Kaep than he did last year otherwise the kids gonna get wrecked in a few short brutal years
It wasn’t the offense that got them there.
So, first off, you’re seriously complaining about the running game? It has been unbelievable since Shanahan became the head coach. Led us to a Super Bowl a few years ago, and had a great regular season this year.
Secondly, there was no passing game to develop because Jimmy G is literally garbage. Until we get a decent quarterback (which Trey Lance is not), it’s always going to be a problem. The Niners haven’t had a good passing QB in a long time
@SFGiantsfan28 Try reading what I wrote. I wasn’t complaining about the running game. I was complaining about the lack of a real passing game. Just look at who keeps winning Superbowls. They all have a passing games.
I like Lynn alot, and I personally think he got a bad hand with the Chargers, but how does any team? A functioning team like the 49ers! Look at his performance in Detriot this past season and say… “Yea… we’ll give you a promotion here.”
I don’t think it’s actually a promotion. For one thing, he’s presumably not calling plays anymore.
*Failing upwards
I’m a 49ers fan, but is there a worse coach out there?
Adam Gase
Well Jesse, based on klay Thompsons recent phenomenal surge after you claimed he sucked, I’ll assume Lynn is a phenomenal coach now that you stated he sucks. Is Jesseumodesto the worst poster? I don’t know how to quantify “worst” other than to just track your moronic posts.
Please let him call plays.
Love,
NFC WEST
I didn’t say he sucked. I said he was a little b and not a team player. More focused on still trying to make the top 75 list and shoot the most shots on the team despite playing half the minutes. That’s what I said.
Welcome to 2022. Everyone is going to jump on the bandwagon now due to Flores Law Suit.
I don’t think Flores will get anywhere with the lawsuit but that’s irrelevant anyway. People are demanding social changes and that pressure is not going to abate. Maybe the NFL owners think they can get to the 200th anniversary of the league with all white ownership but that’s delusional thinking. The reality is that the owners will probably have to accept a black owner within the next couple of years. Ironically, many of the racial problems the league now faces could have been averted had they awarded the ownership group headed by Walter Payton a franchise in St.Louis.
Lol who’s that owner gonna be you can’t just have an NFL team handed to you out of charity and ‘social Justice’ they need big time cash. Robert Johnson? Lebron?
I don’t have a crystal ball but we know certain owners have been around longer than the dinosaurs…so that is the logical place for some changes to occur. Maybe Goodell can convince the McCaskey’s to leave the stage so an ownership group fronted by Barack Obama can try their luck (I’m actually kidding but stranger things have happened).
Great they can be called the Chicago race baiters
@dodger Huh? What does this hiring have to do with Flores? Shanahan isn’t stepping down.
I don’t get all the fuss… he’s not calling plays but has a wealth of knowledge. He’s extremely knowledgeable with the running game- so maybe he takes a great scheme and makes it better.
@Sfgiants- you know they were one defensive play and a bad penalty on the next play from playing next week right? Besides JG isn’t a QB to throw it 30+ times a game. Shanahan might be a great coach who just knows how to maximize the talent on the roster. Hopefully TL comes in and can be a spark plug to take the offense to the next level.
They were flat as can be from the very 1st drive. If you’re QB can’t throw the ball 30 times a game, why have one?
