The Beard is returning to the playoffs. Eric Weddle has agreed to a deal returning to the Los Angeles Rams for a playoff run. The two-time All-Pro is coming out of retirement for one more attempt at a Super Bowl ring.
Weddle announced his retirement shortly after the 2019 NFL season and did not see any time on an NFL field last year. In his lone year on the Rams, Weddle was a team captain and defensive signal-caller.
The new comes shortly after hearing that starting safety Jordan Fuller would require ankle surgery that will hold him out for the remainder of the season. The Rams’ other starter in the defensive backfield, Taylor Rapp, is also in concussion protocol.
Weddle, despite continuing to be a leader on the defense, saw his impact change a bit in his last two years of football. The 37-year old hasn’t forced a turnover in a little over four years, but his last season on the Rams saw him finish second on the team in tackles.
Los Angeles will take whatever version of Weddle they can get as their secondary limps into the playoffs. They face their division rivals Monday night as they host the Cardinals for Super Wild Card Weekend.
wow i hope he has a great playoff game before theyre eliminated lol same o sorry a$$ rams
well thats unexpected
The wildest of “Hail Mary’s”!
The situation must really be desperate.
Not saying he couldn’t make some plays, but he’s been out for 2 years and was already declining.
At least he brings IQ to the team and on the field.
I can’t stand guys like this. If you weren’t willing to play during the season and put in the work like the rest of the guys, then you don’t deserve to play in the playoffs, just to try to get a ring. Selfish. Rams should have signed someone who hasn’t retired and has been working all year to make a team.
This is ridiculous that commenters are going after teams for trying to fill a need in the era of COVID amidst a spate of injuries. Weddle clearly knows the system and will provide whatever support they need.
If the Rams defensive “system” has remained so intact during his 2+ year absence that he can seamlessly fit right in……then they are not long for the playoffs as other teams have tape on their defensive tendencies right?
I’d love to hear you explain how a 37 year old who’s been retired for a couple years is a better option than a guy who’s been on a practice squad and has been training and preparing and practicing all season long. Rams and Weddle can do what they want. I can also do what I want, which is think that the Rams are stupid and Weddle is selfish.
Dude, he’s a 37 year old NFL player. If he might have good play left in the tank, but only for a handful of games as a role player, why not? Plenty of NBA teams rest stars, several hockey players have come back just for playoff runs. If he’s in good enough shape to play at his age and time out of the game, he’s definitely worked hard, and if he’s good enough to help the team, that’s not selfish.
If a rested Weddle is better than whoever else would be out there, I’m glad to see him. It’s the playoffs, not a competition for the attendance prize.
Lol why would someone care about a guy gettin a job…random guy is angry at the wind
No, a 37 year old who hasn’t played in a couple years is not better than a guy who’s been on a practice squad all year and has been training, practicing and preparing. That’s nonsense.
Weddle is 37 not 47. Speaking of which, how old is Tom Brady?
You mean a guy who is still ACTIVELY playing at a high level vs someone who was declining in his age 35 season and hence retired because he couldn’t go anymore?
Yes, let’s compare the greatest NFL player ever (who’s still actively playing) to a pretty good safety who hasn’t played in a couple years. Get out of here haha
Randomguy
Who said he wasn’t willing to play the whole season and is selfishly jumping in to get a ring?
Maybe he didn’t want to play. But, they called him in a desperate situation and he selfish gave up his retirement to help them? Maybe this is an act of selflessness for the team, former teammates, and his former coach?
Because he was retired? I don’t know about you, but normally when people retire, they aren’t trying to go back to the work they just retired from.
So, a player can just be retired for two seasons and then decide to rejoin the team once the playoffs begin? There’s no roster regulations or anything? Lame. Surprised more players don’t do this.
This is a great example why the NFL should adopt roster rules for the playoffs. Sign guys off your practice squad? Fine, at least they were part of the team. Signing someone off the street because of a lack of depth? Ridiculous! Teams should have to pay the price in situations like this.
Nice idea. Wonder if there’s any way the Steelers can coax Pouncey and Decastro back for the o-line.
No need for Pouncey, Green does just fine at snapping the ball over Ben’s head.
It’s a little different. The Rams have a chance of winning a playoff game.
