The Raiders have announced the hiring of Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler as their new general manager. That means that the official hiring of Patriots OC Josh McDaniels as head coach is right around the corner, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter).
Though McDaniels was a late entrant in this year’s coaching cycle — his only interview, which just took place yesterday, was with the Raiders — he became the frontrunner for the position as soon as he was connected to it. Indeed, he reportedly told the team that he would not accept its interview request unless he was going to be offered the job.
Now 45, McDaniels is best known for his lengthy and tremendously successful run as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, first from 2005-2008 and then again from 2012-2021. Of course, he had the privilege of working with QB Tom Brady for almost all of that time, but the work that he did with rookie passer Mac Jones this year also earned him plenty of positive attention. His ill-fated tenure as Broncos head coach from 2009-10 is well in the rearview mirror at this point, and his leaving the Colts at the altar in the 2018 hiring cycle did not seem to deter other clubs from wanting to bring his talents as an offensive guru aboard (though it is worth keeping that jilting in mind until he puts pen to paper).
Assuming he does finalize a deal with Las Vegas, he will inherit QB Derek Carr, who has one year remaining on his current contract. We recently heard that the Raiders’ HC hire would impact Carr’s future in the silver-and-black, but as Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network tweets, there is “mutual admiration” between Carr and McDaniels, so it could be that an extension for the soon-to-be 31-year-old passer is in the offing.
Obviously, Ziegler will have some say in that. In his previous post with the Patriots, he revamped the team’s scouting department and free agency strategy, as Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com (on Twitter) notes, and he has received a considerable amount of credit for New England’s quick rise back to competitiveness after a disappointing 2020, the first year of the post-Brady era. His philosophy differed from predecessor Nick Caserio and will likely stray from recently-deposed Raiders GM Mike Mayock‘s approach.
Ziegler and McDaniels first worked together with the Broncos in 2010, and the former joined the Pats’ scouting department in 2013 and gradually rose up the ranks (2021 was his first as director of player personnel, a promotion he received after Caserio left Foxborough to become the Texans’ GM). Ziegler has been viewed as McDaniels’ GM-of-choice for awhile now, and it appears that the partnership will soon make its way west.
Ok, so what are the betting odds of when McDaniels turns face and reneg’s on the offer?
Based on history 50/50
Goodbye, Josh. You’ve been trying to leave forever.
Overrated. Give him 3 years tops
It’s bad when I first read this my initial thought was “I guess they could have done worse.”
I guess if he hires competent OC/DCs then maybe it works out…
They could have done worse but it would have been hard.
That’s a really easy bet to take. Coaches in general have had a short leash but the Raiders in particular have had 11 coaches, not including McDaniels, in the past 20 years (several were interim, but still).
Is he overrated, though? I don’t really think there’s anyone outside of the LV organization that thinks McDaniels is any more than a New England product
Horrible. I’m okay with Ziegler but daniels is a horrible hire, unless they try to get Brady it makes little sense.
I wish I could tell a potential employer that I would refuse to interview unless they hired me. Why bother with an interview if you’re already assured the job?
He clearly had all of the leverage.
the Raider Way (TM)
Raiders gotta Raider!!
I may actually miss Gruden now.
This will not work out well as not one former Belichek protege has succeeded, so what makes McDaniel different. These 2 former Patriots will destroy the Raiders the way Quinn and Patricia destroyed the Lions and in 3 years all of RaiderNation will regret this move.
Flores was actually looking good, why Miami bailed ♂️
And O’Brian was doing well until he took personnel control
So I’m guessing a 15 year deal for 250mil? Seems in the raiders wheel house
Good thing the NFL is paying a portion of of that bill.
How many of the Pats coach have worked out?
It’s a round number less than 1
I’m excited about this. Bringing in people from outside the organization is much needed. Assuming we can get some competent coordinators I think this is a step in the right direction.
McDaniels comes with some warts, but I don’t think anybody questions is offensive scheme prowess. As long as he’s learned from his mistakes I think this is the type of move(s) that take this team to the next level.
Being that literally half the nfl has switched coaches in the last two years tells me that there’s no such thing as a sure fire hire and I think this guy comes with a significantly better resume than anyone else out there.
Good luck with finding coordinators after his stunt in Indy.
I do not like this. I believe it is a mistake hire. Another 20 years of rebuilding.
So much for the Rooney rule. This guy wouldn’t interview without a guarantee of being offered the job. Did other qualified candidates get the same consideration. Al Davis would be ashamed.
They probably interviewed Art Shell.
The Raiders did full fill the Rooney Rule. Any minority candidate could have said the same thing. McDaniels really doesn’t have to interview anywhere since his job is pretty secure and I’m sure he would have been the first to take over the Patriots. Basically McDaniels was telling the Raiders,”don’t waste my time”.
Don’t waste my time. I believe it was the colts saying that to him.
The Raiders want the baby dictator ? Get ready for some turmoil The guy came to Denver and ran Brandon Marshall off and Jay Cutler. This guys an ego Maniac, with no experience. Daniels thinks he’s Bill Belchick , without the success as a head coach. He will jettison any good players to other teams .He’s an idiot . Have fun watching your team crumble into chaises. McDaniels is a fool .
ha the jokes on you gruden already jettisoned our good players last year
Because Marshal and Cutler led others to success after leaving Denver?
He actually set you up to get Manning with those moves so tell me again how he ruined Denver?
What did he do with the picks from trading Cutler and Marshall?
He used them in part to get Tim Tebow.
McDaniels is a my way guy who thinks he’s smarter than anyone else around him. They usually don’t work out well. See entire Bellicheck coaching tree.
Quinn and Patricia were the same way in Detroit. Look where it got both of them!!!
Iceberg right ahead.

The balls on this guy. If a possible employee, especially one who flamed out once and left another team hanging, told me he wouldn’t interview without the job being assured, ill tell him where to stick it. Easy to root against this dude.
Bisaccia is the best fit for that job. He earned a chance to be the head coach. They’re going to regret this
Go get Fangio next. Retain Bassicia (if we can)
They won’t. It would be a locker room issue.
I love this move as a Chiefs fan. The Raiders can’t get out of their own way. Welcome to the AFC West Mr. Overrated. Let’s see how much a “ Genius” you are playing against the Chargers, Chiefs, Broncos very year. You aren’t coaching in a division with No competition ( for the majority of your career) anymore.
Bandwagon chiefs fan are the worst.
Guess they haven’t learned from the lions. Hire anyone from New England and hire a coach from New England you won’t win anything
Can anyone please explain to me why Eric Bieniemy isn’t a head coach, but Brad Childress, Matt Nagy, and Doug Pederson all got a shot?
Probably all of the teams that have interviewed him and opted not to. And the teams that have passed on interviewing him this year.
I’m not trying to be rude but at this point in time it’s obvious the teams don’t think very highly of him. Either he doesn’t interview well or doesn’t project himself as a good leader.
Pederson won a SB. that’s a terrible example.
McDaniels was not interviewed by any other team because people in the NFL not named Mark Davis understand that McDaniels is overrated and an absolute jerk on top of it.
What would have happened if they interviewed him and didn’t offer him the job? Would he cry? Would he stomp his feet and shake his fists?
Sadly, Mark Davis is terrible at hiring. I’m almost stunned Urban Meyer didn’t get an interview.
Mahomes choked so bad
oddly, too
He’ll flop … again, as a HC.
Over under is currently at 5 days.
I will say this, he’s the first person I’ve ever seen/heard in coach hiring that has said, paraphrasing, ‘I won’t interview unless I know the job is mine for the taking’.
That’s the tone set from the start.
…Not exactly Dale Carnegie.
