Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones participated in an interview with a local Dallas radio station on Friday in which he aired out some of his frustrations with the team’s 2021 season. He vocalized some frustrations about one of the team’s top cap hits, wide receiver Amari Cooper, not playing up to his contract. Charean Williams of NBC Sports wrote a bit about how Jones’s views could affect Cooper’s future with the team.
Jones voiced some problems he’s had with how and when the coaching staff decides to deal with issues plaguing the team, frustrated that these issues aren’t normally addressed until the season is over. While the ESPN article by Todd Archer held some harsh words from Jones, it doesn’t appear at this point that head coach Mike McCarthy‘s job is in jeopardy this offseason.
Here are a few more notes on the NFC East, starting with another item out of the Lone Star state:
- Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel Will McClay reached an agreement with the team, signing a three-year contract extension to remain with the Cowboys earlier this month. Those who follow the franchise know McClay plays a large part in the Dallas front office. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report it on Twitter, ending speculation that the longtime-Cowboy staffer may pursue one of the open general manager positions.
- After the Eagles’ Week 18 loss in a meaningless game against the Cowboys, quarterback Gardner Minshew, who started the game as Philadelphia wanted to rest an ailing Hurts, gave an interview in which he detailed a meeting from earlier in the season that he had with head coach Nick Siranni. After leading the Eagles to a win over the Jets in Week 13, Minshew questioned Sirianni on what it would take to beat out Hurts for the starting job permanently. Mike Kaye, of NJ.com, reveals how Minshew gained some insight on his position with the team, as well as some perspective from being on the team to begin with.
- Following the Eagles’ playoff loss in Tampa Bay, 11-year veteran and four-time first-team All-Pro Jason Kelce suggested that this past NFL season may be his last. As a guest on a Philadelphia sports-radio show Thursday, Sirianni gave a peek inside his own negotiations to keep Kelce active. “I sent him two kegs of beer yesterday,” Sirianni revealed. “As long as he wants to go, we want him to go. And I’ll be trying to convince him every single day that I can to come back and play.” In an NBC Sports article, Dan Roche detailed the rest of a very complimentary conversation with the Eagles’ head coach.
I’m not one of those fans who hates Jerry Jones or the Cowboys to an obnoxious level or gets triggered by simply hearing his name, but it sounds like that was a pretty stupid interview to give. How many times does complaining about a player actually improve his production? As for the coaching staff, I understand Jerry’s frustration, but that is definitely not something you air publically.
And, at the end of the day, Jones is also the GM. He has the ability to directly deal with any roster issue himself. And lastly, he is the owner. If Jones wants something fixed, he has the ability to tell McCarthy to do it. There’s no reason to complain about it publically. Now not only do you still have the problem, you also have a pissed off or embarrassed employee who’s supposed to fix it.
I think the fact that Jerry has to use radio interviews to make complaints is clear evidence that he has been usurped by his son who is actually the decision maker now.
Didn’t they draft Lamb in the first round? That puts a lot of pressure on the coaching staff to get them involved. Cooper didn’t do bad considering he missed 3 games. (2 full missed due to covid and one, he didn’t start and tried to play through injury.). And he was still only 250 yards off of the top WR but had more tds. This is what I don’t like a about the nfl. Now they think they should cut his pay bc they one wrote him out of certain scripts and two he missed games, so therefore he isn’t trying hard enough.
Amari is still the WR1 and “also” 1 of, if not the best route runner, and without a doubt the most intelligent WR in the game !! He loves Our Cowboys, wants to be a Cowboy (and my own personal opinion here) would like nothing more than to end his career as a Cowboy On top of that, he’s just purchased a 6 Mil 12,000 Sq Ft mansion in the Greater DFW Area. So I believe given all of that, that he’s reason to believe he’s staying. He’s only 28 so is basically the same age as Dak, and both in their prime for the next 4-6 yrs (depending on health), but it’s not Amari’s fault Moore schemed out of game’s.
When it comes to schemes, just who was Moore trying to scheme open ? Jerry being frustrated with Amari is like cutting off your nose, bcos it’s stuffy. The reason that Amari wasn’t taking half the field with him, as with Moore (and I’ll even include McCarthy standing there with arms crossed ), as if that’s all he’s going to do; I may as well throw my name in for HC
I can’t find a flaw with Dez stating Tony would make a great OC. However the GREATER Rumor right now is Payton wants out of NOLA. And has connections to the Jones and a mutual love/respect between the 2 families, and that’s not even addressing his affinity for the DFW outside of the rest. Plus perhaps the most telling factor: Comparing rosters, and wanting to hoist another Lombardi. Which team has all the assets in place to complete that, and is already in a win mode. Just needing the right coach ?? The Saints or Our Cowboys ? I believe I’ve made my point, and if you’ve read thank you (whether you agree or not) #DC4LBABY ✭
Jerry Jones is a world class POS and watching him fail EVERY YEAR is caviar grade schadenfreude.
EVERY YEAR.
I don’t think Jones was complaining about Coopers play. i believe he was blaming the coaching staff for not scheming to give their #1 receiver the ball. They are paying him top WR money so he should have top WR production
The article is misleading. What Jones said is that he was frustrated that the QB and OC could not get the ball to Cooper more.
Kelce should go team up with his brother over in Kansas. Just go ring chasing for one or two years with his bro. He wouldn’t be expected to play heaps of snaps with Creed Humphrey there. Instead he could help teach him a thing or two and really like being a mentor on a winning team rather than a heavily used starter or a team which struggles from time to time
No
dougdeb@hotmail.com. First off the Chiefs play in Missouri not Kansas. It would be great to have him as a bench player but only if they could sign him for not much money.
Yeah, it’s always best if you have the right state for a team I live in Warrensburg, so know that the Missouri splits the city. However you’d believe everyone to know it’s the Kansas City, MO Chief’s. The same who were originally the Dallas Texans before Shramm sold them. Then opened the Cowboys in 1960 !! I’d guess this is a younger fan, whom didn’t place well in geography or history I’d agree with vets minimum ✭
I stopped reading after you implied the Chiefs play in Kansas.
KC fan here — no way. Humphrey is already PFF’s highest-rated C in the game. And the number is 10 — Humphrey missed 10 offensive snaps this season. No use signing a guy for that.
Draft position does not determine how good a QB is. Hurts doesn’t have a strong arm, bails out of the pocket too much, doesn’t go through his progressions, and waits too long on throws. There is zero reason Minshew should not have a fair opportunity to win the starting job.
Just look at the famous Rob Johnson vs Doug Flutie controversy. Rob had the size and was given more money so Bills kept on trying to make him the starter over the clearly better Doug.
True, Minshew deserves a fair opportunity to be QB1.
The Eagles should make the same mistake Dallas did with Prescott and give Hurts a big contract.
Well, Prescott has shown some ability to lead an NFL offense at a high level. Hurts has yet to do so. Meaning, we would all be pretty shocked if Prescott lost his starting job this past year. Hurts? Not so much.
I doubt he gets a contract from Philly on that scale-even if we don’t have faith in Roseman, it’s be pretty shortsighted to give a huge deal to someone that you have to reinforce is your starter in the media.
Make the same mistake Dallas did? How about the same mistake they did by opening the vault for Wentz and then ignoring the many gaping holes across the roster to draft a backup QB with a 2nd rounder.
