Aaron Rodgers isn’t interested in sticking around for a Packers rebuild. However, out of respect for his teammates, Rodgers says he will make a decision on his future sooner rather than later.
[RELATED: Rodgers Won’t Stay For Packers Rebuild]
“I’d like to be respectful of the organization,” Rodgers said in his weekly spot on “The Pat McAfee Show.” (h/t Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com) “One decision that will be upcoming will be obviously Davante Adams and his future with the team. There still is this thing called a franchise tag, which I don’t think ’17’ wants the franchise. [But,] I think that should be enough time to make a decision by then. I don’t want to put myself on a specific date, but I do want to be sensitive to Davante and many other guys who have decisions to make on their own futures. To drag it out past free agency would be disrespectful to the organization and to those guys, and that 100% will not happen.”
Rodgers, 38, doesn’t “have a fear of retirement,” nor does he have any additional hints to share on what he’ll do. Even after last year’s back-and-forth over his contract, he’s still under club control through 2023, so he won’t be able to go elsewhere in the spring.
The Packers are projected to be ~$45MM over the cap, not including a potential megadeal or tag for Adams. Tagging Adams would cost roughly $20MM and even a multi-year deal wouldn’t shave all that much off of his ’22 hit. Whether Adams likes it or not, the Packers are preparing to use the tag to retain Adams. From there, they’ll have until mid-July to discuss a longer arrangement.
Rodgers doesn’t want to play for a “rebuilding team”. The Packers have to consider trading him. They’re going to have to cut ties with a number of their players due to their lack of cap space and honestly, Rodgers as well, if not this year then next. Growing pains are coming. Might as well get on with it.
Tag Adams
Trade Rodgers + Adams (new deal worked out w/ new team)
Denver for a packing of players including sutton (recently extended) and picks
Panthers for a package including moore (new contract from Packers) and picks
Raiders for picks
Dark Horse: Titans for aj brown(new contract from Packers) and picks
I don’t think Titans are a dark horse. That is who I keep hearing everyone on ESPN saying it makes the most sense and should be considered the favorites. Tannehill and picks for Rodgers. GB gets a bridge QB so they don’t have to go with Love next year.
F tannehill. Rather roll with Love and tank than keep giving that dude opportunities. Good draft in 23 for QBs (likely).
Why would they need a bridge QB for Love? He’s already had a two year bridge with Rodgers. Is he ever going to play? He was a first rounder. If he’s not ready now and needs another bridge, you may as well cut him now.
I’ve been hearing a sign and trade of Adams + Rodgers for Jeudy will still have 2 plus a 5th year option being that he’s under a rookie contract plus another young player plus 2 1st rd picks
Some team will get suckered into giving up too many picks only to realize in a close game he shuts off. Blames someone for it afterwards and whines and cries nonstop. Wouldn’t want this cancer on my team ever.
Well I’m sure every player on GB and the entire coaching staff\Front office will be begging him to stay in GB. So not sure what team you play for but the team he plays for and probably every NFL team would love to have him.
Your comment reminds me of Donovan McNabb, not Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers for Baker, Greedy Williams and a first
Baker and Love battle for the starting position and if both fail you draft. Baker doesn’t have a big deal so your not 100% committed to him.
That wouldn’t even get the ball rolling for Rodgers. Why take Baker when you could just start seeing what you have in Love? Greedy Williams is solid, but I’d have to imagine Green Bay is going for multiple 1sts and other draft capital to take advantage of smaller contracts and love still with another couple years under his rookie deal.
Rodgers doesn’t have as much *trade* value as people think, because Green Bay doesn’t have the leverage that people think.
Between Rodgers wanting out, threatening retirement if he doesn’t get his way, and the need to get cap compliant before the start of the new league year, they just don’t have a lot of leverage.
They effectively cannot keep him and can’t trade him somewhere he doesn’t want to go. It’s going to come down to whether anyone on his short list of teams (if it’s even plural) are willing or in a position to get into a bidding war.
Ie. If he says, “I’m playing for DEN or retiring” do you really see DEN giving up a haul for him if they are essentially bidding against themselves? All while knowing GB can’t just keep him?
I know most disagree, but I think they’ll be lucky to get more than a 1st for him.
Interesting take goodkat..
Not saying you’re wrong, but Denver views itself as a qb (and a couple lesser pieces) away from a SB team. If they go with Hackett (or Getsy) for their new HC it almost guarantees they’re prepared to do whatever it takes to snag Rodgers (and Adams if they have the assets).
And I’m not so sure GB won’t let him just retire (or that he is ready to walk away) if the return isn’t to their liking.
I’m also not convinced that another team or 2 are going to be scared off by the idea that Rodgers will refuse to play for them. Any trade talks will start with finding that out (and most likely setting some parameters for an extension once a trade is completed).
It’ll take at least 2 #1s and players to get Rodgers. There will be several teams bidding and that’ll jack up the price.
That is an insanely bad deal for the Packers. If they trade Rodgers, they already have his replacement: Jordan Love. They drafted him in the first round in order to replace Rodgers. They would have no interest in a mediocre QB like Mayfield who has never won anything and is coming off his worst season as a pro and a major injury.
If GB is going to take back a starting QB, it can’t be someone thats just going to be in the way of Love getting his chance, IMO. That’s what Mayfield, Tanehill, Darnold, etc, are.
And it’s possible not just Adams, but MVS, Lazard and Cobb will all be gone, leaving a pretty bare WR corps for whoever is taking snaps next year. Does anyone think Mayfield or Tanehill is going to succeed with the likes of Juwann Winfree and Amari Rodgers?
Just an idea, shred it at will.
Three Team Deal:
Packers trade Aaron Rogers to Denver Broncos for two first round picks
Packers trade those two first round picks, one third round pick of their own and Jordan Love to the Seattle Seahawks for Russell Wilson.
I think you have a good framework for the Rodgers to Denver part.
I think that’s too much for Wilson though, and I’m not sure Seattle takes what -to most- will look like a step back competitively.
I bet the NYG would give that much or more for Wilson and they’d include Daniel Jones which is probably a better bridge QB than Love as Love has 0 value.
So Rodgers is only worth two 1sts but Wilson is worth three 1sts plus Jordan Love? How does that make any sense?
That’s my hang up there, too. *If* that deal were to happen, I think it’d be more likely Wilson for Love and a 1st rounder, maybe a 4th or something thrown in because Russ is younger.
Not three firsts. The two firsts from Denver and GB adds a third round pick of their own along with Love.
lmao, sorry. I read that as a ‘third’ 1st. Still don’t understand how Wilson is worth more than Rodgers, especially with Wilson’s huge contract. Rodgers = two 1sts, Wilson = two 1sts, a 3rd, and Love. I don’t get it.
It was just a trade thought. That’s why i said, feel free to shred it. Truthfully how much time does Rodgers have? Probably two good to great years? Russell is five years younger, so they would get some longevity. Russell is not a slouch and does have some decent value with serviceable life.
The trade assets aside, is Wilson any better bet to help us in the playoffs than Rodgers at this point?
I don’t believe he moves the needle forward for GB. If he doesn’t have Adams, I’m not even sure it’s a better situation than Seattle for Russ. Now I could see Wilson in Pittsburgh.
What the hell? Rodgers is worth 2 firsts and Wilson is worth 3 firsts?
Not 3 firsts. The two firsts from Denver and GB includes their own 3rd and Love.
But, essentially, 3 firsts…
Don’t trade for Tannehill! The guy is too up and down, and he doesn’t play well under pressure. 3 picks, at home, as the number one seed, in the playoffs.
Trade for Gardner Minshew.
Downs, yes. Where exactly are his ups?
Rodgers isn’t going anywhere.
As a Bears fan, I’d love for him to leave, but he’s all talk.
Remember when a lot of media people this past offseason were saying he’s not coming back in 2021? And yet here we are again, talking about him possibly leaving.
gocats The difference this time though is the messy cap situation. I 100% believe Rodgers ‘talk’ when he says he doesn’t want to play through a rebuild, it really doesn’t make sense to continue playing in GB if the quality of talent around him declines. He’s too old to wait for a team to rebuild/reload around him.
It’s going to be difficult for GB to just maintain the same caliber roster around him that they’ve given him this year and last, never mind improve on it.
No one expected Brady to actually leave NE, but once the writing was on the wall that the Pats roster around him was no longer SB contending quality and needed a reload, he left to avoid wasting any of his last years. GB may have finally hit a similar situation, for different reasons.
Jeopardy didn’t work out but maybe Rodgers can host “Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire?” in retirement.
The Packers’ current over the cap problems aren’t all that difficult to re-arrange to later years. There’s too much hand-wringing over this. Is it ideal? No. Is it a dumpster fire? Not even close.
Rodgers to Miami would be amazing
