On Sunday, the Raiders found their new head coach in Josh McDaniels along with their next GM in Dave Ziegler. There will be more changes on the way, but regardless of who is installed as offensive coordinator, McDaniels will be the one calling plays (Twitter link via Vincent Bonsignore of the Review Journal).

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise given McDaniels’ background and offensive acumen. Sean McVay took a similar approach with the Rams, opting to call the plays in L.A. despite the presence of Kevin O’Connell.
McDaniels, 45, enjoyed success across two separate stints as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, both with and without Tom Brady under center. In 2021, he guided rookie quarterback Mac Jones as the Pats reached the playoffs and finished sixth in overall scoring. He’ll now look to fix the Raiders and lead them to their first playoff win since the 2002 postseason.
The Raiders made the hiring of Ziegler official earlier today, though they’ve yet to officially announce the hiring of McDaniels.
Maybe they should wait until he actually shows up and signs a contract before discussing play calling…
The crash and burn on this is going to be so much fun!
I mean, I would hope so. Isn’t that kind of the point of hiring him in the first place? It’s not like he’s known for traits like leadership or loyalty
Lol. Silly Raiders. Never change!
They just made the playoffs. Feels different to me.
Mark Davis must be a sucker for big egos, as Gruden and McDaniels are both legends in their own mind. On the field, not so much…
If I was a hot HC commodity I wouldn’t be taking a job in a division with Herbert, Mahomes, and potentially Rodgers unless you are planning on being fired sometime in late 2023/early 2024.
Probably why your not a head coach. Being scared of competition typically isn’t a trait of a good coach.
The AFC South is the place to be. A bunch of small market teams that cannot attract the best free agent talent and have no quarterbacks.
McDaniels proved he can win with or without marquee talent, nurturing a rookie qb to fill the shoes of the GOAT to the playoffs. There hasn’t been any top 5 receivers in NE for a bit aside from slot position. Not sure about ego, never heard anything about him until hiring time. He will be just fine you’re lucky to have him
He didn’t fare so well in Denver so I wouldn’t be so fast in saying he’s a proven winner yet. He’s been a part of a proven winning organization but he’s failed when he’s been in charge
Bill O’Brien has had the most success as HC after leaving the Belichick fold. It’s as if he trains them on how to interview well, but not how to be a head coach. Or, in the case of Matt Patricia how to grab one’s behind with both hands.
Bill O’Brien failed to notice the locker room was being poisoned by Watson and Hopkins. If he had done so early enough he would still be the head coach.
As did Belichick in Cleveland and that seemed to work ok. He left the Colts at the altar the same as Bill did with the Jets, not a cool move I agree but it never stopped teams knocking on his door. Not all ex NE staff work out (Matt Patricia, Mangini Crennel)but some fare very well. Raiders could’ve done worse and better, still say he’s a solid choice.
Weis, McDaniels, The Texans GM, and probably more than I can think. McDaniels would be eliminated after what he pulled on the Colts. It would be different if he’s had some success like Flores and Vrabel but I believe he was 8-20 and that’s after he won his first 5 games
McDaniels may end up being a great coach and win championships. The problem is he’s being treated like a great coach now. He was lousy in Denver and showed no character in the Indianapolis debacle. Why is he being treated like the prized of this years coaching carousel?
