In recent weeks, we’ve heard that NFL teams could be eyeing Jim Harbaugh as a head coaching candidate. Now, according to sources who spoke with The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, it appears that the interest is mutual.
“I think it’s real,” said one source in the know, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
This isn’t the first time that Harbaugh has been connected to a potential NFL return. In late 2020, Harbaugh was said to be thinking about bailing on Ann Arbor, up he publicly vowed to stay with the Wolverines.
“Yeah, that question does come up and I tell ’em, my plan is, committed to Michigan,” Harbaugh said, referring conversations with recruits. “Have been, am and will remain. As far as the (contract), [athletic director Warde Manuel] and I will talk at the end of the season on the current contract. That’s the truth. That’s where it stands.”
Feldman speculates that Harbaugh’s ties to Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and owner Mark Davis could make him a natural fit. Then again, interim head coach Rich Bisaccia has them riding a three-game winning streak heading into the regular season finale. Even if that job doesn’t become available, Feldman notes that the Bears could be a solid fit for the 58-year-old.
Harbaugh established himself as a top-tier coach with the 49ers, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance plus two NFC title games. His Niners went just 8-8 in his final season (2014) but, overall, he owns a career 44-19-1 regular season record.
Can he go to the Jags please? Would love to see him and the GM back together again!
Harbough would be Urban renewal!
Oh come off it. Harbaugh was a successful NFL coach that led his team to the Super Bowl and almost won it (something everyone forgets). Owners and GM dismantled the team and he left.
How dude been in the nfl before. He never left for “health reason”. He turn around a terrible 49ers team and made them a Super Bowl team. He done well every where he touch. Just can’t win the big one . His down fall
You will not see them back together as Harbaugh and Baalke do not get along.
Giants. He’ll run the hole show
Or he’ll run them into a whole in the ground
That’s what I would do. Get rid of Getty and Judge, and give Harbaugh full control.
They are a hole show.
pretty intense for the NFL guys are into it for a while but it tends to wear thin on grown men more than college athletes. I’d want him to coach my team if it was otherwise really talented, but why would a really talented team have a head coaching vacancy? raiders maybe?
Not sure how confident I’d be in him taking another NFL swing without Fangio, Roman, and a roster with that much talent.
Fangio will be available soon.
I’ve always figured that if he made a return to the NFL he would hookup with his brother but anywhere but Chicago is fine with me.
It’s not real. Anyone watching his pregame comments and any press conference knows he’s past his nfl days. He’s a rah rah college coach with about 3-5 years left tops. Dude wears a whistle…who does that?
I imagine Apple has developed a digital whistle that provides game scores, a heart monitor and a guide to clock management but it would probably cost Jimbo $700.
no, it’s a tesla cyber whistle and you can get one for about a $100 bucks.
Pretty sure that Jacksonville is off the table due to his previous relationship with Baalke. The two butted heads in SF and ultimately led the 49ers to making the horrible decision of siding with Baalke over Harbaugh. He did some pretty impressive things with the Niners, albeit with an extremely talented roster. If Bisaccia can’t lead the Raiders to the playoffs and beyond I wouldn’t be opposed to him being hired as the next HC in Vegas.
Great nfl head coach, should’ve never been fired from SF. Almost every team, except 5 or so, should line up to hire Harbaugh
Da Bears wake up!
Harbaugh is a proven coach. Agreed that in SF it looked as if it was growing thin. He did turn them completely around and had a great roster on both sides of the ball. LV is a fitting place as he has ties and the culture there is hideous. He’s possibly just what the team needs to restore the Black and Silver.
Fingers crossed, but it almost makes too much sense for the Raiders.
Raiders could use him to some degree, but I think the Jags would be an excellent fit. Keep him away from the Bears, since we all know his head-first coaching style would go over real well with the McCaskeys.
Wish Niners would rehire him!
Hard same. I like Kyle but Harbaugh should have never had been let go.
Singletary got a bad rap, that defense was solid and Harbaugh ran with it. Jim was a good coach there, but at least the defense was trending upward when he got there.
I’d like to see him return to the NFL, but I don’t think he’ll leave Michigan – unless they give him the boot.
Coming off a season where the Wolverines (1) finally beat Ohio State and (2) made the College Football Playoff, why would Michigan want to get rid of a Michigan man?
Because he has had one exceptional year and 6 mediocre ones – with only one bowl win and 5 bowl losses to show for his efforts. Oh, and his record against Ohio State is 1-5. Previous Michigan coaches got fired with records like this.
Oh God please don’t come to Chicago. Pretend there’s a plastic bubble around Illinois.
He turned the niners around very quick. He developed his squads talent and they became a very deep football team.He got a raw deal,Ownership showed no patience with his competitive nature and comments when the loses got the best of him.
