The Giants’ short list of head coaching candidates includes former Dolphins HC Brian Flores and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, according to sources who spoke with Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. Of course, the eventual successor to Dave Gettleman is expected to lead the search, as John Mara recently said that the GM will have “the flexibility to bring in the head coach that he wants.”

Both Daboll and Flores have been discussed internally for a while, according to Vacchiano. It also helps that “several” of the Giants’ nine GM candidates also hold them in high regard.
As of this writing, the Giants are considering current assistant GM Kevin Abrams, 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon, Titans exec Ryan Cowden, Cardinals exec Quentin Harris, Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz, Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort, 49ers AGM Adam Peters, Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles, Cardinals exec Adrian Wilson, and Bills AGM Joe Schoen.
It’s safe to assume that Schoen has Daboll on the list while Abrams — a longtime member of the Giants’ front office — surely helped to shape the team’s view of both Daboll and Flores. Still, according to one report, Abrams is no longer viewed as a frontrunner. Apparently, the momentum lies with out-of-house candidates like Hortiz, who has serious momentum following his interview, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post.
Flores, 40, is already in the mix for the Texans and Bears jobs. Vacchiano hears that the Brooklyn native is looking for a team that will commit to his vision. That’s worth keeping in mind here, given the Giants’ quick hook for their last few coaches.
Daboll, 46, was in consideration last time around, before the Giants ultimately hired Joe Judge. Judge even expressed interest in making Daboll his OC, but the Bills blocked his request. The Giants ultimately went with Jason Garrett, who was fired in November.
In other words, the Giants are considering anyone with a working headset… I just can’t see them as seriously trying to compete when they aren’t serious about compiling a short list of viable GM candidates.
How are they not serious about gm candidates? They interviewed 9 with 2 or 3 being now viewed as favorite
Far too wide a net to cast for the job opening. It makes the Giants appear desperate and unfocused on who would actually be a good fit for uplifting a run-down franchise in the nation’s biggest city. If the Mara family is serious about turning things around for Big Blue, they wouldn’t feel compelled to turn to their 9th option on the list…
Wouldn’t casting a wide net indicate they’re doing their due diligence in a diverse pool of candidates? If I were a Giants fan, I would prefer that over the previous approach, wherein they were dead set upon hiring Gettleman from the start. We all saw how that decision paid off
I agree that due diligence beats hiring the first guy that walks past. But I think there’s a big difference between compiling a list of the top 5 candidates and chasing after just any executive who happens to hold some appeal. I mean, they even have TWO Titans executives on the list. You would think they would at least narrow down their top guy from a given organization.
If Flores go’s to the Giants will Watson comes as QB ??
Daboll, you really going to downgrade from Allen to Jones?
True, but for him it’s an upgrade and challenge to go from OC to HC.
And they have 2 picks in the top 10…things can change quickly
Absolutely. I would use those two picks on the Oline and or pass rush. Build the team the right way. Plus they have the 2nd round pick and two in the 3rd. Creed Humphrey who I wanted last year was drafted in the 3rd.
Downgrade at qb but upgrade at paycheck
There were plenty of skeptics about Allen during the draft. It’s the exact same people ‘evaluating’ this draft class.
All were wrong about Allen, Lamar, Darnold and Baker! Which is the same reason I don’t listen to talking heads. They can’t predict the success of players.
People seem to forget that Allen was trash until the Bills upgraded the OLine and traded for Diggs… That’s when Allen flourished…. What has Jones had to work with?
Which horrible team will Flores coach next?? The suspense is killing me, with a yawn.
Abrams is not in consideration. They have already started interviewing and never mentioned him on the list.
Flores to the Giants with a trade for Watson to play QB.
They certainly have the trading capital to make it happen.
Without total legal exoneration, Watson is totally unsellable in the NY area.
Maybe the Giants leave the Met to the Jets and play their home games at Rikers Island.
Good idea….Flores is a Brooklyn guy and worked for years under Belichick. I would like a trade for Russell Wilson from the Giants. The Giants have draft picks to package…they could trade one of their first rounders & one of their third founders this year & a 2nd & a 4th in ‘23…plus whatever player or two they’d want to include in the deal. With Wilson in NYC, lots of dudes will want to come to NY.
I meant for the Giants
I wouldn’t give up all that capital for Wilson. They already have major cap issues as well.
Trading for Wilson is foolish. They need all of those draft picks to build a decent line.
Wilson might even veto a deal once he sees he’s playing behind Andrew Thomas and four stiffs.
The fact that Abrams is still being mentioned makes me ill
Don’t think Mara/Tisch is deaf/blind to the league wide criticism that has and would continue if they appointed an inside candidate like Abrams, who has led them into cap hell, into the GM’s chair……the other guy who needs to be kept out of decision making is Cris Mara who obviously isn’t competent to decide anything besides the interior paint color of the washrooms.
Fan reaction to Giants failures of the past 5-6 years should lead to Mara/Tisch picking a GM from outside the organization and as such, Flores friction with his GM in Miami which lead to his firing, should prevent his hiring…..having a GM and HC that are not on the same page would put the Giants back in the same situation they’re currently in 2-3 years from now.
