The Chiefs (9-4) and Chargers (8-5) are getting set to kick off Week 15 in a matchup that could decide the AFC West crown. Meanwhile, more than one-quarter of the NFL’s teams have either been mathematically or effectively eliminated from playoff contention.
For non-playoff teams, the draft order will be determined by the inverted 2021 standings, plus a series of tiebreakers, starting with strength of schedule. For playoff teams, the order is determined by their postseason outcome and regular season record. (Ex: Washington would own the No. 19 pick if they were eliminated in the Wild Card round with the worst record of the group.)
With that in mind, here’s a look at the currently projected 2022 NFL Draft Order:
1. Detroit Lions (1-11-1)
2. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-11)
3. Houston Texans (2-11)
4. New York Jets (3-10)
5. New York Giants (via Bears)
6. New York Giants (4-9)
7. New York Jets (via Seahawks)
8. Carolina Panthers (5-8)
9. Atlanta Falcons (6-7)
10. Philadelphia Eagles (via Dolphins)
11. Philadelphia Eagles (6-7)
12. Minnesota Vikings (6-7)
13. New Orleans Saints (6-7)
14. Las Vegas Raiders (6-7)
15. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-6-1)
16. Denver Broncos (7-6)
17. Cincinnati Bengals (7-6)
18. Cleveland Browns (7-6)
19. Washington Football Team (6-7)*
20. Buffalo Bills (7-6)*
21. Philadelphia Eagles (via Colts)*
22. Miami Dolphins (via 49ers)*
23. Los Angeles Chargers (8-5)*
24. Detroit Lions (via Rams)*
25. Baltimore Ravens (8-5)*
26. Dallas Cowboys (9-4)*
27. Kansas City Chiefs (9-4)*
28. Arizona Cardinals (10-3)*
29. Tennessee Titans (9-4)*
30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-3)*
31. New England Patriots (9-4)*
32. Green Bay Packers (10-3)*
* = Playoffs
Oh man. I feel sorry for Detroit fans. That team isn’t bad, it’s downright AWFUL
Don’t. Like that they are finally tanking for a few years to accumulate high draft picks and talent. Better to me than the decade+ of striving to be mediocre.
The problem is that they usually have a terrible record and they have been routinely picking high in the draft for over a decade and they still suck. They even had a great quarterback all those years. I could never understand their failure to ever put it together.
You have to look at the one thing that never changes… ownership. The Fans of the Detroit Lions should be demanding that the Ford family sell that team. That is the only thing that has stayed consistent all these years. They have no idea how to run a football team.
Ehh, I actually like the steps Sheila has taken so far. Not everyone in the same family is the same person, she doesn’t seem as stubborn to the idea of change as William Clay Ford was for so long. They aren’t selling anyway, so give this new regime some time.
Smh! Wow! I’m an Orioles fan and I thought I had problems with patience. It is a virtue, but Lions fan’s deserve better than this. How much time do you give them? 50 years? No, seriously? Is that acceptable to you?
And how do you change things, killertofu? Besides changing approach and giving it time. There’s no possible way to make this team a contender by next season. None.
Firing coaches and GMs every year isn’t going to solve things. Sheila Ford Hamp is in her second year as owner, so what do you want them to do Killertofu? Fans can not force ownership to sell no matter how much they whine and moan.
Funny how it seems like the same teams at the top of the draft year after year. Almost like where you draft is less important than who is doing the drafting.
I knew what you stated was most likely true. However, I looked at the bottom 10 teams in the standings to see how many top 10 picks they have had in the last 10 years. Here’s what I found:
Seahawks have had 0 top 10 picks since 2012
Texans have had 1 top 10 pick since 2012 (2018 and 2021 they were a bottom 5 team but didn’t own their picks)
Falcons with 3
Giants with 4
Bears with 4
Panthers with 4
Dolphins with 4
Lions with 4
Jets with 6
Jaguars with 9 top 10 draft picks since 2012! Including 6 straight years with a top 5 pick! I don’t even have words for that!
In short, you are absolutely correct
The Jaguars have also picked in the top 10 13 of the last 14 draft picks
I’m a Jags fan and they’ve had the most top 10 busts more than any other team! The problem with this is the owner Shad Khan who keeps the same GM (Dave Caldwell) who takes these picks and doesn’t get rid of him! He finally fired him last year. Dysfunctional organizations make dysfunctional decisions. He goes on to keep Caldwell’s assistant who made these picks with him (Trent Baalke) and makes him our new GM. It’s absolutely maddening how little Khan knows about how to run a football team. He spends money, but has no clue in where to allocate it. I hope Baalke gets the axe at the end of the year just like Meyer did recently. Meyer wanted to retain Baalke so hopefully Khan brings in a coach with past experience with running a football team like Doug Pederson who can choose his own GM. Because the Jaguars are worse than the Jets and the Lions!
My first thought for new coach was Pederson!
Seattle having zero top 10 picks in many past years is beginning to show now. Jets should thank Jamaal Adams for their 2nd top 10 pick for the next draft. Nobody realized, when Jamaal Adams trade was made, that their 1st round draft return from the trade for 2022 will be a top 10 pick. Jamaal Adams is good, but Seattle gave up too much for him.
They’ll get decent draft capital in return for Wilson, assuming he does get traded.
Giants at 5&6 must be thanking the Bears for sucking so bad even after getting Fields last year
Yea they’ll get a second shot at drafting a QB since the 1st was a bust
Jones isn’t a bust, he’s actually pretty solid. Whether he’s their QB of the future is still up in the air. But they won’t be drafting a QB with either of those picks. It’ll most likely be an OT and an edge rusher.
Hey, it’s always interesting to be a Lions fan
If Big Ben does retire and the Steelers like a QB in this draft class, the Giants or Jets are prime targets for a trade down.
GO LIONS! \m/
I hope Kyle Hamilton or Kenneth Wright falls to the Falcons
Draft position is highly overrated. If you browse the HOF register you will find plenty of players who were late round picks and a few that weren’t even drafted.
That doesnt make draft position overrated. Its still rare to find HOF talent in the later rounds of the the draft. The majority of HOF come early in the 1st round, especially inside the top 5
Would Seattle take Giants 4-5, Jones and Barkley for Wilson?
Hmm…
Why would Seattle trade their franchise QB for a QB bust a near bust RB that can’t stay healthy? NY is a big market which Wilson would approve but NY would have to give up 2-3 drafts for Seattle to let go of Wilson in a QB driven league. Seattle would be foolish to trade Wilson. Seattle needs a new HC and possibly a GM that can draft. John and Pete keep trading away their picks chasing talent to try and appease Wilson, such as Adam’s and Duane Brown. They need to rebuild around Wilson, and can do it if they draft well in 2 drafts if Wilson can be patient.
@qbert1996. Statistically only a third of first round draft selections remain starters by their third year in the league. GMs that frequently miss with high selections don’t stay employed long either.
You don’t trade Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, or any other proven franchise QB, unless you have a QB that can step in and immediately replace him. If Seattle were to blow up what is left, you still keep Wilson, hire Josh McDaniels as your play caller and new young Head Coach. I would trade Bobby Wagner, Lockett, Duane Brown, and anyone else except Wilson for strictly draft picks. Then I would trade back in the draft for 3 straight drafts to accumulate more picks. Start building the O and D lines as games are often won at the line of scrimmage. Once Seattle has a legit contender, you go out and sign free agent Vets to fill holes on the team and go all in like Tampa Bay and the LA Rams are doing.
