Davis Mills will start the rest of the way for the Texans, head coach David Culley announced on Friday (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). That means Tyrod Taylor will serve as the backup quarterback starting this week, when the Texans host the Seahawks.
It’s been a trying week for Taylor, who hyperextended his left wrist last Sunday against the Colts. Even though that’s his non-throwing arm, handoffs and snaps proved to be challenging. Taylor exited in the third quarter after going 5-of-13 for 45 yards and one interception. Mills, meanwhile, completed 6-of-14 of his throws for 49 yards. None of those passes achieved much in the end — the Texans lost 31-0, dropping them to 2-10 on the year.
Mills has made six starts for the Texans this year, filling in for Taylor when he was on IR. To date, he’s got a 65.5% completion percentage with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. Unless he really shines in the coming weeks, he’s unlikely to return as the Texans’ starter in 2022. If the season ended today, the Texans would own the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, behind the No. 1 Lions and No. 2 Jaguars — ample ammo to select, or trade down for, one of this year’s top QBs.
Taylor, meanwhile, will be a free agent when his one-year deal expires in March. His pact could have been worth up to $12.5MM via incentives, but the final tally will wind up closer to his base of $5.5MM.
Might as well see what Mills can do, though I think we’ve seen enough.
Tom Brady would have trouble being a .500 team with this offense.
The only weapon he has on offense is Brandin Cooks and has an oline that ranks near the bottom of the league.
There’s really no “franchise” QB coming out. Draft offense and see what Mills has. Get him help. If he does well great. If he stinks the roster is much improved for the “franchise” QB.
I like the decision.
In the draft the Texans should target help for Mills and see what they have. Adding some weapons would be good.
Current Texans Draft
Round 1 – Evan Neal LT
Round 2 – Justyn Ross WR
Round 3A – Zamir White RB
Round 3B – John Metchie III WR
Round 4 – Marquis Hayes OG
Round 6 – Robert Cooper NT
Round 6 – Marquan McCall NT
Round 6 – Nick Ford C
Trade Brandin Cooks to the Patriots for their 2022 3rd, 4th round picks, and a 2024 3rd rounder. Add another weapon for Mac Jones in 2022. Familiar with the system.
Trade DeShaun Watson to the Steelers
3 conditional 3rd round picks starting in 2024. If he plays plays next season it becomes 3 2nd round picks starting in 2024. If he plays in 2023 it becomes 3 1st round picks starting in 2024.
Don’t know most of these names, but no way Metchie is a third rounder. If he is, he’ll stay back for his senior season.
Metchie tore his ACL. If healthy he would certainly be 1st early 2nd round talent. I doubt he returns to Alabama if he has a favorable draft evaulation like a 3rd rounder . 8-12 month recovery. He could be ready for 2022, but at 10-12 months he’d miss half the season and would possibly a 3rd rounder or worse if he isn’t 100%. Same thing happened to Keenan Allen few years back. He was a 1st round talent, had a knee injury in college, dropped to the 3rd.

The Texans won’t take conditional picks like that. They want 3 firsts ASAP along with more draft capital. Rumors say they were offered 3 1sts by more than one team. Why wait for 1sts two years from now? Caserio wants to put his print on the team now. Hard to ask your boss, even one as incompetent as Cal McNair, to allow you to wait for the picks starting years down the road.
