Purdue defensive end George Karlaftis will enter the 2022 NFL Draft, according to head coach Jeff Brohm (via Tom Dienhart of Gold and Black). This was the expected move as Karlaftis is regarded as one of the best edge rushers in this year’s class.

“They will not be coming back to play next year,” Brohm said over the weekend. “They will be moving on.”
Mel Kiper of ESPN currently has Karlaftis ranked 21st on his Big Board. He’s registered just 4.5 sacks this season, but the 6’4″, 270-pounder has consistently brought the pressure. As a frosh in 2019, his only other full season, he registered 7.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. In 2020, a positive COVID-19 test limited him to just three games.
Karlaftis will be joined by wide receiver David Bell, a potential Day 2 pick. Bell set new collegiate career-highs this year with 93 catches for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns.
4.5 sacks
That’s exactly how many Danielle Hunter had in his whole college career.
1 season with good stats, the next missed most of it, and 2 sacks this year. Somehow that makes him a 1st round pick?
Because scouting a guy just by sacks is silly? He had something like 12 pressures against Iowa. He also deals with a ton of double teams because he plays for Purdue.
Also, it’s not his fault he missed most of 2020. That was Purdue’s pandemic season, not something about him.
Well, when its your job to get sacks, that’s a starting point right? That’s like saying a WR w/ 10 catches a year should be in considered but his QB’s were bad.
Not really. A guy could be schemed to rush free often and have 5 sacks, but that doesn’t necessarily make him more effective than a guy facing double teams and still getting QB pressures.
I hear you. But his stats are much better as a freshman than a junior. Click on the link. Teams figured him out and stopped him. This is Purdue, its not like he had a stud DE his freshman year and now he’s on his own.
I’m not saying he’s awful, but his production wouldn’t warrant a 1st round grade to me.
Pressures are more predictive than sacks. He’s doing great. He’s also played almost 200 fewer snaps than he did as a freshman and almost 100 fewer pass rush snaps, but had 6 more hurries. He was also number 7 on Bruce Feldman’s freaks list, with some athletic numbers that would guarantee him in the top half of the first round if he tests like that. Plenty of college players who rack up tons of sacks turn out to be mediocre pros. Plenty of great pros didn’t put up gaudy numbers as college kids.
To me, you’re arguing against yourself. He played less as he’s gotten older? Why would they play him 200 snaps less?
It’s not like he’s gotten less playing time because his play has struggled. He played a ludicrous number of snaps his freshman year. 843, which is far more than any of the top edge defenders/defensive lineman in the upcoming draft have played this year. Those guys tend to play better when rotated and kept fresher. Sure enough, his overall PFF grade is 13 points higher than it was his freshman year.
I’ve watched the game, all levels, since the 1970’s. When any team (HS, college, Pro) has a good to great player, they play them.
I don’t follow every individual player, impossible. But when a guy gets cut 200 snaps, it says a lot.
I didn’t see any pro prospects in last week championship games sitting, did you? Again, I did not say he’s a bad player, just not a 1st rounder.
Sorry, that first part is meaningless. How come none of the top prospects in his position group played drastically more? How come none of them played nearly as many as his freshman year? If he stays healthy, he’s absolutely a first rounder.
Are you his agent??
Pro teams scout players on more than just production but also has he reached his ceiling because a lot of players don’t reach it but get drafted in the first round on that ceiling. So if he is considered a first round talent it’s because of his ceiling not stats
They?? lol what??? He?
it?
oh never mind hes referencing two players in the original interview
That’s my cousin!
