The Panthers shook up their coaching staff over the weekend by firing offensive coordinator Joe Brady. That’s led to speculation over Matt Rhule‘s status in Carolina, but Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com (on Twitter) doesn’t get the sense that the head coach’s job is in danger.

Meanwhile, Rhule was atop the wishlists at LSU, USC, and Oklahoma before they made their hires. And, another high-profile NCAA job opened up earlier today when the University of Miami dismissed Manny Diaz. Despite all of that, Rhule is not interested in a return to the college ranks at this time, according to sources who spoke with Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.
As a college coach, Rhule went 47-43 in seven seasons at Temple and Baylor. That record doesn’t necessarily jump off of the page, but NFL teams have took notice of Baylor’s quick turnaround from the Art Briles era under his watch. Rhule’s Bears went 1-11 in his first season (2017) but they improved with time. In his final season at the helm, Baylor reached the Sugar Bowl, prompting serious from the Panthers, Giants, and Browns.
Rhule, 47 in January, would be a splashy hire for any high-profile team in need. Meanwhile, the Christian McCaffrey-less Panthers are 5-7 on the year, giving Rhule a combined record of 10-18 across the last two years. Things haven’t gone according to plan for Rhule, but it sounds like the Panthers may give him another chance for 2022. And, if that’s the case, he’s inclined to stay put.
Based on his salary why would he go to Miami? I mean he’s not gonna get fired this season. He can always find a college job if he ends up fired at some point. But I think he’s got at least one more season if not more based on his salary
When Cam Newton is your starting quarterback, you have to give the head coach a little slack.
Cam sure does look finished. He may have some value as a backup, giving them the option to use him as a runner as the goal line. That’s about it.
Hm. Fire a guy for not winning with Sam Darnold or Cam Newton? I have no horse in this race, but seems like the GM should shoulder more of that responsibility.
Yeah, and not having McCaffrey only increases the challenge. I don’t think it’s fair to judge the guy’s job performance based on the offensive talent (or lack of, rather) in Carolina.
Yeah, that’s insane, even to blame Joe Brady for their failures will end up being a big mistake.
How can anyone TRULY and RATIONALLY blame Brady or Rhule for their lack of success when you look at their offense and the Panthers talent level they have to work with.
Heck, they aren’t miracle workers!! You can scheme up some of the best plays, but unless you have the players to execute, you’re going to fail.
The fact they’ve even won 5 games should have been worthy of a raise and extension for Brady and Rhule.
Carolina has a personnel problem, and you can’t blame that on the coach nor the OC…
proofread much?
not at all lol
He wanted to coach the NYG anyways. Judge isn’t the answer there either. May as well make everyone happy.
if he wanted to coach them, then he should have told Tepper to get off his lawn.
Tepper really has no idea how to run an NFL team but he wants the public to think he’s in the heavyweight class with Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft.
Just FYI, this guy was never in the top list of anything for Oklahoma U….They had Brent V on their radar from day # 1. And if that fell through Matt was still not in line.
