The Giants are shutting Daniel Jones down for the rest of the season (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). While the quarterback’s neck injury isn’t especially serious, the team is opting for the cautious approach.
Jones has been out since Week 12 and there’s little reason to bring him back out with three meaningless games to go. Of course, these final few games will carry some significance for the Giants, who are currently in line for the No. 5 overall pick. They also own the Bears’ first-round choice, projected for No. 6 as of this writing.
The Duke product will finish near the bottom of the league’s QBR rankings with just ten touchdowns against seven interceptions. He’s got 21 touchdown passes in 25 games over the last two years — less than the 24 TDs he totaled as a rookie in 2019.
It all adds up to a career with flashes of promise but not enough to justify his No. 6 overall draft slot. With a new GM likely on the way, Jones’ status is very much in the air. Between now and May, they’ll have to decide on the QB’s fifth-year option for 2023, which would cost the Giants somewhere around $21MM.
Without Jones, the Giants are left with Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm on the QB depth chart.
5 picks between NY and Philly alone… The NFC East pretty much owns the first round at the moment…
Who cares both of you clowns draft like junior high students.
After seeing the backup QB for the Ravens play against GB, he’s a QB someone needs to consider as a starter.
The second coming of Tyrod Taylor in Baltimore. Tyrod started his career as a back up Baltimore.
Tyler Huntley definitely looked good against Green Bay. Should be given a shot somewhere. Maybe Seattle if they move Wilson.
The browns have 3 QB better than the Giants
Or the Ravens could look into trading Jackson. Get 3 1st round picks and save a ton of $.
It’s a great idea provided Baltimore fans want another team that can lose as much as the Orioles.
Tough break for DJ, who hasn’t been terrible, but hasn’t been especially good either. It won’t matter much anyway unless they fire the imbecilic GM, who’ll spend his two Top 10 draft picks on two offensive lineman who’ll be Wal Mart greeters in 3 years.
I’d be ok even if they took one of the Olineman in the 2nd or 3rd. Anything better than last year not taking any. Creed Humphrey is going to be a 10-12 year starter at center for the chiefs, and the giants could have easily taken him in the 2nd or 3rd.
He wasn’t even available by the third round
He should be done for career. Hasn’t done squat. But knowing the G-Men, they’ll pick pop his option for a mere $15m over cutting bait.
‘Done for career’? He’ll be 25 next year and even if he’s not starter material, he could have a long career as a backup.
It was poorly written comment. But he clearly is not a starting QB. Not even worth regular BU money. He’ll turn the ball over. Years of proof for that.
Why do people continuously overestimate the average level of skill of backup quarterbacks in the league? If the guys could start long term, they wouldn’t be backups. There is such a thing as “too bad to be a backup”, but starting three or so seasons is a huge asset as a backup.
In the past GMs didn’t have to concern themselves much with QB depth if they had a capable starter but with the league on coarse for a 18 game schedule only the most optimistic fans can believe backups won’t have a more significant impact.
Compared to Glennon, DJ is an ALL PRO.
Let Fromm start the rest of the season, see what he can do.
Totally agree
I think they will. Glennon has been awful, no point in letting him play. See if Fromm can be a viable backup.
Yeah Fromm was really good in college
I thought he was done at Duke. Didn’t realize anyone would be dumb enough to draft him and especially in the first round. Oh yea I forgot it was Gutterman listening to the expertise of the Mannings
You keep saying that about the Mannings, but what in God’s name would make Eli Manning recommend his replacement to Gettleman for a job he was still trying to do? Yes, I get it, David Cutcliffe works with Peyton and Eli. But quit the nonsense about them instructing the Giants on who and who not to pick.
I don’t think Jones is the answer, but he’s been playing behind one of the worst offensive lines all three years of his career. I think you roll with him next year and spend those two top picks on the offensive line. Or one OL and whatever top defensive lineman is available, as the defense is soft and has generated very little pass rush since Gettleman arrived.
Rounds 2-7, more of the same. Offensive linemen and BPA on defense. Maybe add a WR at some point.
Yes this draft should be focused on Oline, pass rush, LB. Have 5 picks in the top 100.
Who cares both of you clowns draft like junior high students.
Daniel Jones will soon become another first round bust that some desperate team will try to rehabilitate. Since only 1 out of 10 of those attempts are successful the future doesn’t look too bright.
Why did the Giants hire Glennon to begin with? Putting him out there is a disgrace you might as well try ANYONE else.
I have a feeling that all front office types in the NFL belong to some satanic cult where they have sacrifice children. I also believe Mike Glennon has pictures to prove it.
Should have kept McCoy. Even if it cost a few more $$$. At least he is a competent NFL backup. Glennon is not.
I want to see Jake Fromm State Farm play.
Ya but will he get the Patrick rate?
