Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly suffered a thumb sprain during Thursday’s loss to the Titans, but the injury may be worse than initially thought. One source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Garoppolo suffered “a more significant injury” than a sprain, putting his availability for Sunday’s game against the Texans in doubt. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the 49ers QB suffered a chipped bone and torn ligament in his right thumb, but there’s still hope that he’ll be able to play this weekend. Schefter clarifies (on Twitter) that it’s a UCL tear for Garoppolo.

“It’s a thumb sprain, so I think you guys know how those are,” coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier today. “It didn’t feel great today, wasn’t able to throw today and we’ll see how it is on Wednesday. Hopefully it will get better.”
According to the head coach, Garoppolo suffered the injury during the second quarter of Thursday’s game. The QB ended up throwing an interception on the first drive of the second half, his second pick of the game. Garoppolo missed Monday’s practice, with rookie Trey Lance taking the spot atop the depth chart. Garoppolo is set to be reevaluated on Wednesday.
After the 49ers gave up a bounty to select Lance with the third-overall pick, the 30-year-old Garoppolo has had a bounce-back season in San Francisco. The starter has gone 8-6 in 14 starts, completing 68 percent of his passes for 3,494 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Lance got a start back in Week 5, completing 15 of his 29 pass attempts for 192 yards and one interception in a loss to the Cardinals.
JG has rings, (should have a) fat bank account,& good looks. Retire make a make mil+ being on TV, much easier and longer career w/o the aches. At 30, he knows he’s not Canton bound so start a new career in the same industry.
this is…not a career ending injury.
You say that off a thumb injury? Not like he blew out his knee .
I agree with your statement… but I think Garoppolo can play a few more years before he goes to TV.
I didn mean for it to sound as though this a career ending injury; It’s not. But in today’s NFL wealth, load up & do early retirement if possible. For a player on a Hall trajectory, no; keep playing. But otherwise why beat the crap out of yourself?
There’s go the playoffs, not going anywhere with Lance in there.
Not if they go hard on the run game and do simple pass plays to make him comfortable. They did win playoff game once off the run game. So they can do it
No, Lance looked HORRIBLE when he was in this year on plays designed for him. He might be good in the future but he is NOWHERE near ready this year.
Assuming this is his last year with the 49ers and the lack of a legit college QB prospect, there should be a market for Jimmy.
However, Rodgers, Mayfield, Wilson, and Watson available, who needs a QB and wants to compete?
Broncos
Panthers
Saints?
WFT
Steelers
I think Tua and Hurts both have shown enough promise and growth to be given at the very least one more year
Is one more year really worth it when you can go at with with Rodgers, Russ, or Watson?
Shanahan grinning like the Grinch rn
If Lance was showing them anything he’d already be starting, as Garoppolo has been anything but rock solid.
High fan, the article kinda indicates Rock solid.
All the hordes of people dumping truckloads of shade on Garappolo better be ready for Lance to start. I mean, reading the comments on some of the articles on other sites about Jimmy G made him sound like a third string FCS alternate waterboy. Comments like that I just cannot understand-there are a lot of teams that could use good QB play, even if it’s not elite level necessarily, and there are even more fans who just can’t see what a reliable starter can bring to the table (for instance, the Garappolos, Carrs, and Cousins of the world).
In reality, he is a good quarterback, though not a spectacular starter. Even in the Titans game, where Garappolo missed several key throws and may have been his worst game of the year, he moved the ball effectively for the majority of the game. Aside from his avoiding the turnovers, another receiving option could have won that game possibly, or a better running back.
On a team with good options, he will look better. He has the ability. Of course, the flip side is of course that he can only be relied so much. He’s not Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning. But Garappolo is someone you can rely on to execute your offense. As long as your offense is solid, he is one of those guys who can run it for you.
AK, if the issue was the lack of receiving options, I might agree with you. But Jimmy is missing wide-open targets now and making bad throws to his intended targets. He’s not solely at fault for that, as Lynch and Shanahan have surrounded him with a career-ending offensive line and a roster that isn’t deep at all. He’s not as bad as his detractors claim.
The whole situation reeks of management malpractice, from the questionable draft moves and resulting choices to the salary/roster choices (e.g. sending away Buckner). On a deeper team with a better line and consistent running game, Jimmy would be OK. But that’s not what Lynch and Shanahan have created in SF.
You are correct in that Garappolo missed on some bad throws that game. I wasn’t indicting San Fran, I was more stating that Garappolo can help make good receivers look good, so to speak. He’ll still hit most throws-we’re not talking backup level quarterback play here.
The 9ers also are not a team that has much in the way of possession threats with that said, other than Kittle. They have a few very good RAC types, especially Deebo Samuel. I just think Garappolo’s style is more suited for a team with bigger receivers who make money in contested catch scenarios to help. Garappolo likes giving receivers chances on contested throws, which is usually one reason (that Titans game notwithstanding-he just flat out missed) that he throws interceptions. I agree with what you said regarding the roster.
I think Lynch actually has done a decent job overall, but picking players for Shanahan’s offensive model has led to much forcing players into certain roles while leaving others unaddressed. I suppose I blame Shanahan more than Lynch for directing those picks, which is one reason Garappolo possibly could be better.
Almost time to give Tom Savage another shot.
