If the Saints call, Philip Rivers says he’ll pick up the phone (Twitter link via Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times). The former Chargers and Colts quarterback hasn’t heard from Sean Payton & Co. yet, but he’s at least open to coming out of retirement.
Rivers announced his retirement back in January, choosing to coach high school football rather than return for an 18th NFL season. However, the 39-year-old (40 in December) did say that he would stay in shape in case he had a change of heart in October or November.
“It’s a long shot at best. But gonna be ready just in case,” Rivers told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen in August (Twitter link). “…Will not even consider until our season is over no matter what. And like I said, somebody has to want ya.”
Rivers spent 16 years with the Chargers before spending the 2020 season with the Colts. All in all, the former No. 4 overall pick tallied 63,440 yards, 421 touchdowns, and nine Pro Bowl nods. He could, in theory, add to those totals with the Saints, but it’s not clear if the interest is mutual.
For now, the Saints are prepared to move forward with some combination of Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill under center. Free agent Cam Newton is not under consideration and future Hall of Famer Drew Brees has already said that he’s not coming out of retirement.
Even without Winston, Siemian and the Saints still managed to beat the Bucs 36-27 on Sunday. Now at 5-2 on the year, it remains to be seen whether they’ll give Rivers a ring.
“it remains to be seen whether they’ll give Rivers a ring.” That’s pretty funny, given he hasn’t gotten a ring so far. :0)
If Rivers goes to the Saints and wins it, I would hope he’d get a ring!
Seriously…?
I didn’t see Sunday’s game so I don’t know how Siemian looked. I guess he did all right considering that he’s barely played in almost 4 years. Rivers has been a great quarterback, but I honestly wonder if the Saints would just be better off with Trevor. Rivers isn’t going to have a training camp to get ready, and being in shape and being in football shape aren’t the same thing.
But if you want to go out and get a a QB someone like rivers would be the best option whos not expecting a contract past this year
A couple of his bonehead mistakes were negated by defensive penalties. He looked about as good as anyone would expect, which is to say, just ok.
Honestly, I think they should. It would also be funny to see Rivers replace Brees once again.
Is Brees considering a comeback or is he completely done?
He said he’s done
He was asked point blank on live TV and said no.
Yeah I get it Rivers replace Brees and does nothing.
The last thing Saints fans (and fantasy owners of Kamara and any wr) is Hill under center! Siemein is capable at least with the right cast around him. Hill is a me first type of qb NOW with a concussion that’s kept him out since week 5. It’s not like Winston was lighting the field on fire at qb so I don’t think there’s much of a drop off going to siemein imo. Saints need an actual real qb next year.
At least Winston was limiting mistakes. He was on pace for 40 td’s and 8 int’s, which is a miracle.
The issue with Hill, the Saints had to adjust the offense to cut in in half to allow Hill to read routes. In other words he can’t see the whole field. He’s not the type of QB you want in the game if the team is behind. Denver last season shut him down who had the 3rd best passing D in the NFL at the time yet they also had a lousy run D which allowed the Saints to run all over them.
Vs the Eagles the Saints got behind and Hill was sacked 5 times and a turnover because he was forced to read the whole field and he held the ball too long. His deep passes are punts so Siemian would be the best option. As for next season if JW is not available Ian Book will be the Saints starter. this is the first time the Saints didn’t put a 4th string QB on the practice squad.
Wow didn’t realize 40 year old retired has been QB’s could be in demand. Oh that’s right it’s Phillip Rivers trying to hang on again.
