The Packers are adding reinforcements in the wake of Aaron Rodgers‘ positive COVID-19 test. Quarterback Blake Bortles is en route to Green Bay, where he’ll sign a deal to join the practice squad (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com).

From there, Bortles could earn a quick promotion to backstop Jordan Love on Sunday. Love has attempted just seven passes as a pro; Bortles can relate, even though he offers significantly more experience. The former No. 3 overall pick has played in just three games since the 2019 season. He jockeyed between the Broncos’ active roster and practice squad throughout 2020, ending the campaign on the Rams practice squad.
Bortles signed with the Packers in the offseason, but didn’t make it to the final cut. Now, he’s back to provide the Packers with some extra insurance against the Chiefs.
Bortles, 29, disappointed during his five seasons with the Jaguars, where he completed only 59.4% of his throws for 92 touchdowns and 58 interceptions. All in all, he has a 24-49 regular season record as a starter.
Bortles isn’t as bad as I thought. 60% completion and a 3/2 interception ratio offers some kind of hope. His win record is terrible but even Trevor Lawrence is sinking on the Jags.
His fatal flaw has always been trying to perform beyond his limitations. When he can control the urge to try to win the game by himself he has some value.
Always a good dude in Jax, stuck in a terrible franchise. Good luck Blake!
I was actually hoping the Saints signed him, in the wake of Winston’s injury.
how tf, does this guy keep getting starting oppotuties, while guys like Maroita and Minshew are rotting away with their teams.
He’s not starting. He’ll be Love’s backup for the game
He spent time in GB camp, so he has some idea about the playbook.
That explains THIS situation. I won’t even try to explain, understand, or care about the rest.
Just read one of Mike Florio’s forty articles about Rodgers scheming to destroy the CDC from the inside. He’ll spell it out for you.
Unless you were referring to the Bortles starting thing.
Minshew is a mystery (could be starting on the Redskins) but Mariota has shown himself as extremely inconsistent and frustrating as a quarterback. Mariota is a great backup though as he could come into a game and play close to high end starter level.
“ Love has attempted just seven passes as a pro; Bortles can relate, even though he offers significantly more experience”
I’ve said it 20 times and I’ll say it again FIRE ZACH LINKS HE IS AWFUL
Bortles actually looks like a professional QB – until he gets in the game. Then he robotically becomes a check-down Charlie – regardless of whether he is under pocket pressure. Once teams take that 4 yard cross away he panics and forces the ball to someone who isn’t open.
