Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did not practice today due to a “personal matter,” per the team’s official report. Meanwhile, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters that he and GM Andrew Berry are discussing Beckham’s status with his agent (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo).
It certainly seems like OBJ wants out of Cleveland, following yesterday’s social media posts from OBJ Sr. and pal LeBron James. The Browns considered trading him to the Saints before Tuesday’s deadline, but ultimately decided to keep him.
Beckham is also dealing with a shoulder injury, a recurring theme throughout his career. Via one injury or another, he hasn’t enjoyed a healthy season since 2019. Meanwhile, the drama has been non-stop over the last three years.
“[Baker Mayfield is] either hating on Odell or he just doesn’t want him shining,” Odell Beckham Sr. wrote on Instagram yesterday, right around LeBron’s #FreeOBJ tweet.
Beckham, 29 on Friday, has four 1,000+ yard seasons to his credit, but has yet to approach his gaudy 2015 and 2016 numbers with the Giants. Technically speaking, he’s tied to the Browns through 2023. But, in reality, it’s more of a year-to-year arrangement. He’s set to count for more than $15MM against the cap in 2022 and 2023, but his deal has no remaining guarantees.
If the Browns wind up releasing OBJ during the season, he’ll be subject to the waiver wire as a post-deadline cut. From there, teams would have 24 hours to claim the wide receiver and the remainder of his contract.
I’d make him a healthy scratch every week. That’s the punishment for having daddy air your grievances on social media.
That and Lib-Bron.
This is a dumb suggestion. Maybe that petty b Mayfield should be a healthy scratch, he’s not making the team any better and he is clearly doing this on purpose to phase OBJ out becuase his star is bigger
No chance that is happening. Beckham caught 2 passes from Keenum on Thursday night so I guess Mayfield paid Keenum to not throw to Beckham? Beckham has been targeted more than anyone on the team
A lot can be attributed to OBJ’s drop in usage over the past few years but the main one has to be the system he’s in. The Browns have become a run-first team who want to get the ball in the hands of Chubb/Hunt and let them work for yards. From the limited number of Browns games I’ve watched this year, it seems like their passing game is for show and a way to keep the defense liable to drop one or freeze one of their linebackers. Short/medium passes, which is not OBJ’s forte as he showed he was a plus route runner on medium-deep routes in NY. While Beckham may not be as explosive as he once was due to injuries, he still could become a 1000-1300 yard receiver in a system like the Bucs, Chargers, Rams, or Chiefs. Still, he’s only 29
Nailed it. Exactly! He has had injuries. S might not be the player he was with the Giants but he isn’t being used right and could still easily put up 1,000 yards with the right QB. He’s used on shirt, pitch and catch type plays or across the middle where he’s getting nailed on and that’s not ha he does best. The Browns offense isn’t a deep passing style of offense and even when they do try Baker just isn’t accurate enough to get hm the ball in stride which is weird because he was really accurate in college, just hasn’t been in the NFL. No discredit to Baker, he’s a decent QB, he’s not bad, this style of offense fits him perfectly and doesn’t fit OBJ. Personally hope he finds his way to a team where he’s utilized correctly because when he has a good QB he’s fun to watch. Bucs don’t need him, Rams maybe, Seattle is rumored to be in on him but don’t think they need him and don’t think that’s a good fit. I would say Chiefs or Colts would be good fits for him. Packers too. I’m a 49ers fan and wools love him but it would be the same with Jimmy at QB, if Lance was playing then yes definitely go get him. Curious to see how this plays out. I think he ends up getting waived, been hearing he might be waived today
Didn’t realize BRON , BRON is now a players rep? Did he give up being Chief Cry Baby in the NBA
He’s gonna start it in Boston, soon, too, I bet. Almost enough to drive a Bosox fan to the dark side (The Yankees)?
Not to defend OBJ or his dad because you shouldn’t be airing this stuff in public. And sure, OBJ has had injuries and has lost a step.
But it’s pretty clear that the system the Browns run is not a good one and it’s also clear that Baker is nothing special at QB. At times he’s even bad.
Think about all of the weapons Baker has had. Nick Chubb, Jarvis Landry, OBJ, Kareem Hunt, Njoku/Hooper, plus a great offensive line and yet they’re never near the top of the league in scoring. 2018 through 2021 they have ranked 20th, 22nd, 14th, and 19th this year. Is there anyone who does less with more than the Baker Mayfield Browns?
Good RBs, but those receiving options aren’t as great as you make them out to be.
When they acquired OBJ, he was an elite WR. So was Landry. Those WR options were fantastic. Do people just not remember how great OBJ was? Fastest WR in history to 300 catches (45 games). And how was Jarvis Landry not great?
Landry has been an incredibly overrated slot receiver his whole career. Njoku and Hooper aren’t nearly the talented TEs you are trying to make them out to be. OBJ can’t stay healthy. If anything, I’ve seen Baker make some complete no-names look good. And the offensive line is great? Can you even name the left tackles they’ve started since Thomas retired?
You don’t know the Browns as well as you think you know the Browns.
According to PFF, the Browns had the best OL coming into the season. Their LT is 1st round draft pick last year from Alabama named Jedrick Wills.
the Browns have 1 of the highest ranking OL in football, maybe you are not the one who knows the Browns as well as you think you do.
So the browns handed out 23 mil in guaranteed money to a TE who isn’t as good as people think? Great cap management
I didnt say their decisions were smart. Hooper had one decent (not even very good) year and in a contract year, and as is normally the case when that happens, someone overpaid.
And I get that they are a very highly graded offensive line. One of the best run blocking lines. I’ve heard plenty of criticism about their inconsistent left tackle play in pass protection the last few years. A lot. But yeah, im sure those analytics from PFF are all you are concerned about.
I mean this is the second year they’ve had this offense so it’s cherrypicking to bring 2018 and 2019 into it.
I’m not necessarily a Baker defender by any means but look at the differences in the offense with and without Odell. Some guys just aren’t fits some places; it doesn’t mean he can’t go succeed somewhere else, but it’s pretty clear it’s not in Cleveland. Besides, the rest of the options you listed (other than the running backs, who are great) are a short route possession receiver and two mediocre to average tight ends. Most of their names outweigh what they still provide on the field.
I think Chaney nailed it, personally. Beckham just doesn’t fit. Mayfield may not be good enough to take adavantage, or maybe Beckham just didn’t work hard enough (there is some evidence here of that). But I will say that Mayfield typically works better with other receivers. Beckham could regain form, but his mental state seems more important in determining that than his physical state.
Obj is a bum
That’s what the ‘b’ stands for in OBJ?
All Beckham needs to do is shoot himself in the leg and he will be Plexico Burress II.
Ever feel like this is an “addition by subtraction” situation.
He’ll end up in either Dallas or Seattle
You hear that? Its Beckham crashing yet again? Don’t worry, there’s another team in the wings awaiting to cut him after Cleveland…..Today’s NFL!
Beckham’s Dad is nothing short of a complete idiot. Like Baker Mayfield is going to do ANYTHING to make his team worse. The guy is fighting for a contract extension for gods sake. How about catching the balls that ARE thrown at you, and use the TWO hands that god gave you. Pathetic whiner
