While the Browns search for answers on offense during their bye week, at least one thing will remain the same. Head coach Kevin Stefanski will retain play-calling duties rather than handing them to offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, as Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot writes.
“We talk about a lot of things every single week,’’ Stefanski said in his press conference Monday. “I’m comfortable with the communication that goes on throughout the week and on gameday. The offensive staff is outstanding, especially [offensive line coach] Bill [Callahan] and Alex throughout the game, so I’m comfortable with how we are doing it right now. We just have to be better. I have to be better. That’s the truth. We just have to find ways to stay on the field and get sevens when we are down there in the red zone.”
The Browns currently sit 19th in the NFL averaging 21.2 points per game, and rank 16th when it comes to yards per game at 372. Since their decisive win over the Bengals in Week 9, Cleveland has put up point totals of 7, 13 and 10, respectively. Clearly, the removal of oft-maligned wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has not helped quarterback Baker Mayfield engineer a more efficient passing attack. Meanwhile, the Browns totaled just 40 rushing yards on Sunday night against Baltimore, even with Kareem Hunt back in the lineup.
After the bye, the Browns will have an immediate chance at revenge against the Ravens at home in Week 14.
The problem isn’t the play-calling, it’s that Baker even when healthy isn’t a great QB, and he’s been dealing with big injuries for a while now. Great that he’s willing to play hurt, but he’s killing the team being out there.
Agreed
But that comes back on the coaches. Baker is an iron man, playing through injuries that most QBs wouldn’t. It’s on the coaches to make him sit and get healthy, if he isn’t playing at a high enough level. Not on Baker to bench himself. I’m not a Browns fan. I respect Baker tho. He isn’t a top 5 guy. He can win tho. He has a lot of value. Make sure your franchise finds someone proven to be better before letting him walk..
Baker also has nothing to throw it to. Not a single #1 WR on that team and not even a #2. Then when he hits his WR they drop the pass. Twice on that final drive his WRs / TEs dropped passes that hit their hands. (To go with 5 drops in the game overall) I get the man isn’t playing the best, but the Browns have one of the worst WR corps in the league.
Is Jarvis Landry not good anymore? Genuine question. Austin Hooper? Njoku? They have pretty much nothing else after that, though.
Jarvis would be a #2 if he could stay healthy. Hoop and NJ both had key drops in clutch situations. Browns have to lead the league in dropped passes this year.
They desperately need to draft a WR early next draft and get OL help.
wtf? OL Help? last time I checked they’ve been extending all their O-Linemen because they have the Best O-Line in the league.
Zero depth….once anyone goes down they have nothing. need more than just a good starting 5
Sounds like exactly what the Bears Nagy has stated on multiple occasions. Before he was forced to hand over play calling duties.
Nagy needs to not be allowed to even talk to an offensive player or coach during a game or dying practices.
The receivers are not getting separation. That’s either speed or play calling. Mayfield deserves some of the blame but isn’t it strange how much better Cousins got in Minnesota after Stefanski left? And he doesn’t have Rudolph or Diggs anymore not to mention that I believe Irv Smith has been out most of the year
I’m glad someone else sees the issue is way more than “Baker sucks.”
The QB coach they had a couple of years ago from Cincy seemed to do wonders for Baker.
The issue is that as a new head coach you need to be aware of the whole game with all activities that occur. If your head is buried in your playbook then you are not noticing anything else around you. Set your pride aside let someone else handle the play calling and quit saying “we need to look at the film” or I need to get better. Those excuses are now 8 weeks old!!
Definition if insanity-doing the same thing over and over and expect better results.
You are to smart of a coach to keep letting this happen!!
