The Jaguars’ coaching staff figures to look pretty different next year. Offseason firings are “inevitable” at this point, according to sources who spoke with Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.

Trevor Lawrence has yet to live up to his billing in Jacksonville, prompting some internal debate about whether the Jaguars should replicate his system from Clemson. Heading into today’s game, the No. 1 overall pick had completed just 58% of his throws for 1,983 yards and eight touchdowns against nine interceptions. His work on the ground — 37 carries for 169 yards and two scores — hasn’t been enough to offset the bad reads, nor has it approached his rushing work at Clemson. Lawrence, playing against lesser defenders in the NCAA, managed 766 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns between 2019 and 200.
Meyer, who is in favor of gearing the offense towards the Tigers’, finds himself at odds with several of his assistants. Wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal and running backs coach Bernie Parmalee could be on the chopping block, per JLC’s sources. And, if things don’t improve for Lawrence this year, quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer may also find himself on the hot seat.
“It starts with execution,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said last week (via the team website). “That’s really our focus this week, being on our details and being able to execute.”
Unfortunately, the Jaguars failed to execute today, losing 30-10 to the 49ers. Now at 2-8 on the year, they’ll try to improve next week when they host the Falcons in Jacksonville.
Yeah, no wonder Lawrence hasn’t delivered. He actually really doesn’t look hopeless himself (he looks like a lost rookie) in games, it just looks like the team itself is uncoordinated and unprepared. It looks like they’re running a college offense that’s out of depth and out of sync. But, honestly, what the hell do you expect when you hire a college recruiter with no experience in the NFL? How’s Meyer (who is a questionable Xs and Os coach himself) supposed to bring Lawrence to NFL speed when he doesn’t even know what NFL speed is?
Running a system close to Clemson’s is the easy way out. Meyer style, as always. And it won’t freaking work in the pros. Fire that failed and inept GM, fill some of those roster holes. Get Lawrence a real coach and leave the simplistic college offense in freaking college.
I think fans have convinced themselves that systems determine success but as Bevell correctly points out execution is the key. No system can succeed without good execution and if execution is good then almost any system can produce wins.
yeah, loads of blame to go around.
100% correct in that Lawrence doesn’t look hopeless, just a lost rookie with no help from his coaches and, to a lesser extent, the lack of talent on the team to help him out.
I may be in the minority here and he definitely doesn’t suck but, to me, I didn’t see Lawrence progress as a top tier qb should in college. Again he doesn’t suck but he didn’t seem to develop at clemson just maintained his level. He seemed to be pretty much the same qb as a frosh as he was his final year at clemson and relied on the program around him. which makes me weary of his success in the pros in a place like Jacksonville that doesn’t seem to grasp how to build a team. Again he doesn’t suck…
Do you know who holds the Rookie record for most interceptions in a season. Peyton Manning
The year Urban won the championship at Ohio State he had Todd Herman as OC. Once Todd Herman left that offseason, the offense had struggles at times against good teams, including not giving Zeke enough touches some important games. I know he won twice in Florida before that, but he has never been an Xs and Os genius the way some coaches like Mike Leach are.
You also have the fact that Lawrence seems to be overrated with the “best QB since Luck/Elway” stuff. He won titles, but he played in the ACC not exactly a conference of defensive juggernauts. When he played Ohio State his final year, a team with some actual NFL caliber players, he wasn’t great. Compare that with Joe Burrow getting through the SEC.
I think Lawrence might do better with a new coach, but he is no pre-injury Luck.
Too often people without knowing the FACTS. The ACC had 9 players out of 36 defensive players in last years pro bowl selections. The SEC had the most as expected and the Big 10 appears to be 2nd, not certain about that but in a quick look it appears that way. The ACC is 3 and no one else comes close after that, so that nonsense about the ACC not playing is just that, NONSENSE. FACTS! Oh for icing on the fact cake, 4 of the last 10 NFL DPOY Awards have been by an ACC player. (2 different players) The most by any conference.
Fact check, the ACC is 2nd in NFL Defensive Pro Bowlers from 2021.
How many of those players were on Clemson?
Herman was not the reason for Urban’s ship at Ohio St…Herman wasn’t truly in control of that offense
And Herman gets too much credit for that offense and championship
Maybe they have a lousy record because they don’t have enough talent to compete yet.
Trevor Lawrence is a great prospect surrounded by a lousy team. What do people think by adopting his college sister he becomes a great QB?
Fire assistants? Because that always works. You hired the wrong coach. Face it and move on
I’d like to adopt his college sister. Just saying.
Lmao the head coach is the main problem. Dude is a giant flake and no one respects him. The jags have a lot of talent on their roster. I think they should cut ties with urban and look else where. Plenty of talent on this roster and would look appealing to many coaches around the football world to come in and have a young qb with a lot of talent, a stud rb and a under rated defense. Can make them a playoff team in a year with a few signings in fa and a decent draft.
A lot of talent?
A lot of talent? they traded anyone worth anything because they were disgruntled or the team wanted the picks. Only talent is the qb and robinson(maybe chark). But they then go and draft another RB when they already had one on a rookie contract. Big waste of a pick when rbs have a 4-5 year shelf life and you already had one.. Disagree on underrated defense, they are overachieving as it is…
Urban safe?
Of course, cheaper to dump his staff than dump him. He’ll also gladly watch them get dumped than step up for them.
You must have never worked a job if you don’t perform you get fired . You don’t let your subordinates get you fired
The subordinates he handpicked? He’s sacrificing them to save his own arse.
‘;Meyer, who is in favor of gearing the offense towards the Tigers’, finds himself at odds with several of his assistants..’
So you now decide to build your offense off what your QB was successful at? Clueless franchise statement right there.
All Meyer needs to do is funnel some cash under the table to their parents and have some strippers “greet” all of the top recruits and he’ll have a great team in no time.
What’s that? You have to actually be able to coach in the NFL?
Bad times for Meyer, then.
Start with Meyer
Jacksonville, just got their new OC, here comes DAN MULLEN!!! lol
Actually, for what a moron he is off the field, Mullen actually is a really solid Xs and Os OC. I actually think it would be a good hire for Urban Meyer, but of course most people would make jokes about him trying to replicate his college years in the NFL, etc…Still though, Mullen is a great offensive mind, and I think Meyer would be wise to scoop him up, regardless what I think of Mullen personally…lol
I agree wholeheartedly. Lawrence also can run which fits Mullens ideal qb in his offense…
DJ and Bucky Brooks hammer “The Three P’s”. Protection, Play makers, and play calling. Lawrence has little support in either of those categories. Robinson is a stud but anything beyond that is questionable at best.
On top of the that the Jags have been swimming in turmoil since Meyer has taken over.
Nobody has mentioned the truly epicenter of your suckiness. Bevel we were so glad when he left. The O got better when they opened it up and let Wilson cook. I am offering you a trade do you trade Lawrence and this years 1st and 2d and next years 2nd and 3rd? It will get you an instant uograde Yes or no or another version of the trade.
